Much to Warner Bros.' chagrin, Zack Snyder shot some additional scenes for the "Snyder Cut" of Justice League. Among them was the reveal that Harry Lennix's General Swanwick is, in fact, Martian Manhunter, with the filmmaker adding a meeting between the alien and Bruce Wayne at the end of the movie (original plans called for it to be Green Lantern).
With Henry Cavill's time as Superman at an end, we don't expect to see any Man of Steel supporting characters return in DC Studios' new DCU.
That means Swanwick's story has already reached its end, though we'd be surprised if James Gunn and Peter Safran don't have any sort of plan in place for Martian Manhunter.
In the meantime, a newly revealed Iron Studios statue offers our best look yet at the DCEU's take on the hero. It's a cool design for the character, and one that's pretty much in line with the comic books. As for the costume, it definitely fits into the aesthetic of Snyder's DC Universe and it's easy to imagine this Martian Manhunter teaming with the Justice League.
We don't know exactly what the director had planned for J'onn J'onzz in his sequels, and it's possible this reveal only came as a way of rewarding fans for sticking by Snyder with the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement. The reveal is one he always planned, though, and we're sure Martian Manhunter would have been badass to see in action.
As we enter a new era of storytelling in the DCU, it's clear the "Snyderverse" era of storytelling is at an end. Gunn and Safran could choose to resurrect it in some form as a way of placating a very vocal fanbase, but we don't expect that to be the case.
Zack Snyder's Justice League is now streaming on HBO Max and available on Digital, 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD.
