David Thewlis played Sir Patrick Morgan in 2017's Wonder Woman, though we'd later learn that he was, in fact, Ares. He may have become a villain by that point, but Zack Snyder's Justice League revealed that the Greek God of War once fought to protect Earth from Uxas' attempt to acquire the Anti-Life Equation and conquer the universe.
While stuntman Nick McKinless portrayed Ares on set, visual effects were used to place Thewlis' face on his body. However, while fans were grateful to see this sort of continuity in the DC Extended Universe, it turns out that his inclusion in the "Snyder Cut" came as a total surprise to the actor.
"I would just like to say that I have no recollection of this ever happening - I assume it was before lockdown," Thewlis said before making fun of the VFX used here. "I do not know these gentlemen and I have no idea why my left arm is so tiny. Anyone with further information please come forward."
When one fan asked if he shot these scenes or if existing footage was used, Thewlis responded: "Oh, it’s a film?" Clearly, he had no prior knowledge of this cameo and wasn't involved in any way.
That's a little strange, but given what a tiny role Ares played in the story, there was probably no reason to notify Thewlis.
