Mark Strong On Possibly Coming Back To The KICK-ASS Franchise And GREEN LANTERN'S Failure

While chatting about his latest movie Zero Dark Thirty, Mark Strong was asked about his friendship with Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn, where he said the two have talked about a possible return to the Franchise. He also expressed his disappointment in Green Lantern not performing well.

Empire recently had the chance to talk with Mark Strong in their recent Podcast. During the podcast he was asked about his friendships with both Ridley Scott and Matthew Vaughn. Strong revealed that Vaughn, who directed the first Kick-Ass movie but is only producing the second one, has asked him to play apart in the sequel. "We talked a little bit about, there's a new Kick-Ass 2 coming out, and there is a scene in there with a relative of Frank D'Amico. Matthew and I talked about the possibility of maybe (me) playing that part. I couldn't do because of date issues," Strong explained. He also teased that we may not have seen the last of the D'Amico character, with him teasing, "with out wanting to give anything away, I think there might be a life in Frank D'Amico yet in the Kick-Ass franchise." Whether he means in the upcoming movie, or in a future Kick-Ass related movie, only time will tell.

Things have been pretty quiet on the Green Lantern front since the movie came out, and failed back in 2011. While Strong wasn't asked or didn't offer up any thoughts on the possibility of a sequel, he did bring up that he was sad the movie didn't do better when he was asked about John Carter's failure. "I felt the same way about Green Lantern. I really liked the build up and Geoff Johns' commitment to Green Lantern, and everybody worked on it with the best of intentions," he said. Going on to say, "Ya know, nobody makes a movie thinking 'oh god let's just make a terrible movie, let's not really try in this one shall we? Should we not even bother?' Everyone was really committed, and it's a shame it didn't catch fire in the right way." With Warner Brothers looking at a possible Justice League film in 2015, there is a chance they sill might not want to cast fresh faces on the Green Lantern side, and just use continuity that they have already established. However, since the movie did so poorly there is a Strong likely hood that the franchise will get rebooted, no matter how awesome Mark Strong was as Sinestro. He was a great Sinestro. Such a shame!

Mark Strong was great.

Ryan Reynolds was well, Ryan Reynolds. Which is to say, not good. He brings too many of his character quirks from previous films.

Get a new GL. Just not John Stewart. Keep it original (Kent, Wayne, Prince, Jordan, Allen)...

Everyone was commited... but the director and Blake Lively. You can see the parts of the movie were people cared and the parts where they didnt.

Sinestro was indeed the best part.

With a better script lantern could still work with Strong and Reynolds

The relationship felt forced and anytime Reynolds and Lively were on screen, the writing killed any chemistry. The villains were pretty bad too. It's a fun movie to watch when bored and you can skip a lot of scenes.

Him, MCD as kilowog and Geoffrey rush as Tomar-Re were easily the only good thing about that awful movie. Reboot GL but keep strong and rush. Strong as sinestro is one of the best comic book movie casting decisions ever IMO.

Maybe they should just make a Sinestro movie!!

I do find it funny when people say that Martin Campbell is a bad director considering he's the same person who directed casino royale and goldeneye. When you've got 2 terrible writers like Guggenheim and berlanti amoungst 2 other writers, no wonder the movie sucked.

See, now I thought GL was ok, but I thought GR:SOV was much better than it got credit for. I dunno - I think a few tweaks in the script for GL and it might have been a much better movie.

he was an awesome sinestro because sinestro was well-written, and he was directed to play him as grim, stern and severe. reynolds and lively weren't as good because they were poorly written and directed to play their parts as a wuss and a princess, respectively. but these people are not bad actors.

you guys don't seem to get it. i was a professional actor way back when... i'm not famous because i'm short and i'm not handsome and i'm no daniel day-lewis in the talent department, but i was pretty good. here's a clue: acting is doing what you're told. yes, you need the talent to pull it off, and you need to create a believable presence and so on, but you don't INVENT the personality you're playing, you PLAY the personality they WRITE FOR YOU. reynolds was great in buried and safe house, lively was fine in savages and the town. better writing, better direction, better movies, better performances.

the same natalie portman and hayden christensen that murdered star wars were great in black swan and shattered glass. the same peter saarsgard that was the worst thing in GL was good in that too, and great in an education. angela bassett and tim robbins are pretty effing good actors, are they not? well they sure stunk up the screen in GL.

grow up people, and stop placing the blame on the workers instead of the bosses! the movie was MADE badly, but the actors did all they could with the shit they were handed.

What bothered me the most about GL was that there was absolutely no sign during the movie that Sinestro would turn evil. None! Yet he puts on a yellow ring at the end of the movie, just like that, out of nowhere. WHY???

He's the only reason of why I want Green Lantern to be semi-rebooted, or something like that. Such a perfection shall not be wasted in one poor attempt.

They should have took more inspiration from the animated film First Flight, it should have been the DC Training Day set in space.

I honestly think the only three things that the movie got right were Abin Sur, Hal Jordan, and Sinestro. Well they got Hal Jordan semi-right. Ryan Reynolds wasn't a bad Jordan if given the right script I think he could be perfect the script just has to be there.

Green Lantern was a bad film nonetheless. However, it had some good things.

Strong as Sinestro
The suit design

and that's pretty much it.

Mark Strong's Sinestro was great. There were some good things about that movie, but other parts were laughable in the theater, like nobody was laughing when Hector Hammonds head was growing but me. That sot of made the movie more entertaining to me.

the acting was pretty good in GL. of course not oscar worthy or anything but thats expected. his portrayal of an average witty guy that overcame fear with courage at the same time having the responsibility of protecting the earth wasnt bad one bit. the story though was just horrible. someone wrote a bad movie and unfortunately for ryan reynolds hes blamed for the entire thing

acting by reynolds and strong of course

I agree with what @MARVELPSYCHO79 said. This movie has SOOOOOO much potential! Its set in freakin space!!! It would've been the first CBM to successfully do so! (not counting Star Wars since they were films first)

This could've completely established DC as a sci-fi, god-like character driven company. But then they COMPLETELY drop the ball hiring TV writers to man such an important task! TELEVISION WRITERS!!!! That was just set up for failure... then as soon as they casted RR I knew this film wouldn't be the film we all wanted.

Now, back to topic. Mark Strong did not do much in the film, but in every scene he was in HE OWNED IT!! He kept the film somewhat watchable while we were trapped in the theater.

I want this film to be rebooted but keep Strong as Sinestro. He was just too good to not bring back.

Sinestro should NOT be the villain in the reboot since they need to make us fall in love with him, create the strong master/apprentice relationship between him and Hal that they failed to do in the film.

Then in the second or third film or end of second make Sinestro the villain. Don't rush things. This film was obviously rushed and caused its downfall in the end at DC's expense.

Ok, I'm done. lol

I blame GL's failure on the writers and the powers that be at WB. They need a better overseer ala Feige with Marvel

Anyway I know I'm in the minority but I enjoyed GL. Yes it should've been 10 times better, more focused on Parallax. Left just a hint for Hector Hammonds and Sinestro for the sequels. Less focus on toy merchandising too and the film could've been much better.

Still I think the franchise is salvageable

The main problem with that film is it didn't spend enough time in space. And we didn't see the Corp fight anything together really... but Strong was a awesome Sinestro! Wouldn't mind him returning for the reboot.

Get rid of Ryan Reynolds.
Never hire Martin Campbell for anything, ever.
Hire better writers whose primary experience isn't in comics.

Franchise saved.

you can reboot it just keep reynolds as GL, lively as ferris, and Strong as Sinestro

Ryan Reynolds was not a good casting choice for Green Lantern unfortunately. For Flash maybe but for Green Lantern no.

The combination of the writing and him as Green Lantern really sealed the fate for this movie. I'm just glad that I got to see it for free because if not I would've have been real upset about wasting my money.

For me I think a semi-reboot is possible with Green Latern being recasted and Mark Strong still being Sinestro.

Personally, I loved Ryan Reanolds in GL. I thought he was great. The writing suffered a little bit but look at his other work, the dude can act if give the right director.

Sinestro was perfect. Again, the writing is what failed it. When he suggests to use a yellow ring for the first time was the momen where the movie began to go downhill. Till then it was great.

And no, Kilowag was not good IMO. I love MCD, but his portrayal and scenes were just...meh. Could've been a lot better

I didnt like MCD's Kilowag voice either (because it wasnt Kilowag, it was just MCD), Strong was prime and Reynolds couldve been good if only the director actually directed him to be Hal Jordan and NOT RR. Villans were wack and the amount of time on Earth was by far the weakest link (tied with Mr. Mean Yellow Cloud)
