Martin Scorsese incurred the wrath of many a fanboy last week with his negative comments regarding Marvel movies, and the legendary director is sticking to his guns - even going so far as to suggest that theaters shouldn't be screening so many!
While speaking at the BFI London Film Festival last night, Scorsese doubled down on his “it's not cinema, it’s something else" take, adding:
“We shouldn’t be invaded by it. We need cinemas to step up and show films that are narrative films.”
Scorsese then repeated his assertion that cinemas have become "theme-parks," although he does seem to have some appreciation for the work that goes into making these huge superhero blockbusters.
"That is fine and good for those who enjoy that type of film and, by the way, knowing what goes into them now, I admire what they do. It’s not my kind of thing, it simply is not. It’s creating another kind of audience that thinks cinema is that."
We shouldn't need to point out that Scorsese is absolutely entitled to his opinion here, but the idea that Marvel/superhero movies are somehow ruining cinema by preventing or making it more difficult for "real" films to see the light of day is has been dismissed as nonsense by many,
including Samuel L. Jackson.
