Marvel Studios Exec Seemingly Confirms Plans For NOVA To Be A Disney+ TV Series

Following reports that Marvel Studios is forging ahead with a Nova project, new comments from executive Brad Winderbaum seem to suggest the plan is for the character to head to Disney+. Check it out!

In recent days, we've once again started hearing rumblings about Marvel Studios' plans for Nova. The character has been ignored for far too long, with Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn happily admitting the hero never interested him.

The expectation is that when the character does finally appear in the MCU, Sam Alexander will hold the Nova mantle. There may, however, still be plans for Richard Rider to act as a mentor or partner to the teenager.

Talking to Screen Rant, Marvel Studios Head of TV, Streaming, and Animation, Brad Winderbaum seemed to strongly hint that Nova is destined to take flight on Disney+

"It's new territory for us, developing more shows than we produce," he started. "Nova certainly is exciting to us, we've got some great ideas simmering. I think there's a lot of potential there. I love Nova, also, from the comics, especially the Richard Rider era...we'll see what happens."

"Like you said, there's only so many release slots in the schedule, but we want to make sure everything we make is as good as it could possibly be," Winderbaum added. "But I will say that is a particular project we are excited about and excited about developing."

Another big takeaway from these comments is the fact that, while Nova remains in development alongside a slew of other MCU TV shows, it's not officially in the works (though some scoopers claim otherwise).

Unless most of the action is set on Earth, Nova is likely to be a big budget project, making a streaming debut questionable when Disney is looking to reduce costs.

Nova, whose real name is Richard Rider, first appeared in The Man Called Nova #1 in 1976, created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist John Buscema. Richard Rider becomes Nova when he is chosen by Rhomann Dey, a dying member of the intergalactic police force known as the Nova Corps, to inherit his powers and duties.

As Nova, Rider gains superhuman strength, flight, and the ability to absorb and project energy, all granted by the Nova Force, the source of the Nova Corps' power. He also wears a helmet that provides advanced life-support functions, communication, and access to the Xandarian Worldmind, a supercomputer containing the knowledge and experiences of the Nova Corps.

Sam Alexander is the second character to take on the mantle of Nova in the Marvel Comics universe. He was created by writer Jeph Loeb and artist Ed McGuinness and first appeared in Marvel Point One #1 in 2011.

Sam is a teenage boy from Carefree, Arizona. His father, Jesse Alexander, was a member of the Nova Corps, but Sam initially knows him only as an unreliable janitor. After Jesse goes missing, Sam discovers his father's Nova helmet, which grants him access to the powers of the Nova Force.

Stay tuned for updates on Nova as we have them.

What happened to the "cinematic" part of this universe?

@HashTagSwagg - to be fair, Nova isn't really a heavy hitter. This is a safer move.
kazuma

@Slotherin - Shang chi, gotg, captain marvel, thunderbolts, and about 80% of the MCU weren't heavy hitters.

@HashTagSwagg - That’s not cinema!!! Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks.

@kazuma - what's your point?
Only one of them seems to have been a hit that withstood time and critics/fans all that amazingly
kazuma
kazuma - 5/20/2024, 10:17 AM
@Slotherin - So Captain America hasn't stood the test of time? Because he definitely wasn't a hard hitter pre MCU. What about Iron man? Or Thor? Spiderman was the only day one "hard hitter", while the rest were basically nobodies.
A spiderman movie is never a risk. Everyone else in the MCU was a risk.
Slotherin
Slotherin - 5/21/2024, 12:48 PM
@kazuma - I was referring to the examples you listed specifically...
But Captain America clearly stood the test of time... He's remained a main player in Marvel since he was reintroduced in the Avengers comics. Everyone and their moms knew about him even if not very well.
He was a major player in Civil War as well.
Even Iron Man and Thor benefited from association and being core Avengers members prior to their films.
So yeah, they may not have been heavy hitters but they had recognition on their side.
All of the aforementioned also had appearances through multiple cartoons and games enough to be recognizeable.

Nova has shown up in Ultimate Spider-Man so I'm sure kids get some familiarity but his exposure and familiarity pre-MCU over the past few years isn't nearly comparable nor are his years of being around to gain it.

So yeah, I think a series on Disney+ is a much safer investment for them and would work to appeal to the relatively smaller fan base around the character and legacy.

@Slotherin - " Everyone and their moms knew about him even if not very well." they didn't though. Outside of comics 99% of marvel characters are obscure to the regular audience. And these movies and shows are made for the regular audience.
Slotherin
Slotherin - 5/21/2024, 9:45 PM
@kazuma - I'll admit I probably overstated his prominence, many who grew up with superheroes since WW2 had some familiarity with Captain America... He wasn't revered by many as he is now but he was prominent enough to be referenced, shown or displayed in other things.

The MCU didn't rocket from just regular audiences; it had support of pre-existing fandom mixed with appeal for regular audience. So when they hit the mark they had the approval of both.
Slotherin
Slotherin - 5/21/2024, 9:47 PM
@kazuma - ffs, Dexter's Lab had a parody of him, he had multiple movies even spanning generations... Nova doesn't have as much of that is the gist of my exaggerated point.

So just seems like they are in the planning stages right now and if an idea clicks then they will only move forward which is good imo…

I’m cool with it being either Sam or Richard as the lead but I would prefer both in a mentor/mentee or older/younger brother type dynamic.

You could have Richard as an established Nova already that was away on mission when Thanos decimated Xandar and has now been looking for survivors as he tries to help people in the galaxy along the way..

One day he finally gets a lead on a possible survivor only to come to Earth and realize he is missing and that his helmet is now in the hands of his son Sam , Richard tries to help him find his dad and thus the story begins.

NOVA really should have been one of the first movies Post Endgame...

It's such a wasted opportunity not to tell an origin story that picks up after the fall of Xandar under Thanos.

Now he'll just feel forced or pointless.

Marvel [frick]ed the pooch in Phase 4.

Ms Marvel should have been a movie. It would have been a great movie. A classic. It being a show meant it just dragged on and was ultimately pretty meh.

Moon Knight should have been a movie. A massive mother[frick]ing movie. And it should have been better written and more faithful to the original concept. More urban and dark and with his personalities taking more than just the names from the comic.

Nova should be a movie too.

Think about the bad decisions Feige and Marvel continue to make

Silver Surfer Norrin Radd will be replaced by a
female Silver Surfer no one asked for

And instead of Richard Rider Nova

will get a teenage Nova tjat was mot popular in the comics

Iconic , popular and legendary characters replaced

Widely believed by who? Is that you, Hamilton, and Ruby? Just because he’s going to be younger does not mean he has to be Sam. Richard was a teenager in high school when he became Nova. I’m not saying it couldn’t be Sam, but there’s just as good of a case it being Rich based on the rumors.
CorndogBurglar
