PINOCCHIO Star Tom Hanks On Possibly Joining The MCU And Whether They've Ever Reached Out To Him

The legendary Tom Hanks has revealed whether he's heard from Marvel Studios about joining the MCU and expresses interest in exploring that world and the challenges a role in the franchise would present.

Tom Hanks is an icon, but why the heck haven't we seen him in a superhero movie? Remember, he's just worked with Disney on the live-action Pinocchio and even starred in a sci-fi movie with Apple TV+'s Finch

In the video below, the Toy Story star is asked outright whether he's been contacted by Marvel Studios. The answer, unfortunately, may disappoint you. "No, no, not to my knowledge. I do not know," he says. "Boy, talk about coin of the realm. Holy cow."

He'd go on to say, "Okay, alright. Let's unpack this. Is there an era of film in which a very particular type of movie dominated the marketplace? You could say Westerns in the 50s. You could say the John Ford universe of Westerns is not all that different to the Marvel Universe of motion pictures. If it's a bodacious John Ford Western, would you do it? You might do that."

So, it appears he's open to entering into the juggernaut that is the MCU, though it's not a world he's intimately familiar with. He certainly doesn't look down his nose at the genre either, though.

"Is it officially the Marvel Universe of motion pictures? The MCU? Alright. And it's got Spider-Man and the X-Men? Look, I haven't seen them all, I'll give you that right now," Hanks admits. "The ones I've seen, I've never come away without thinking, 'There's a couple of great performances in there. Those people really gave their all.'

"I don't know how they do that. Then, after that, it's like, did they examine the theme? They're all quite good."

We'd be shocked if this didn't happen eventually, and this interview might at least make it clear to Marvel Studios that he's open to working with them. It is hard to say who he would be a good fit to play, but it's hard to believe that a role couldn't be found for him somewhere!

Perhaps he's just playing coy and has already spoken with Kevin Feige? We'll see.

I still love the idea of Tom Hanks as Lex Luthor

@TheRose - he would be great Lex for a Kingdom Come aged Superman.

@TheRose - Love that idea too. I remember years ago, I think he was a guest on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno (before there was ever an MCU movie), he did mention wanting to play Iron Man, I think he would have been a great Iron Man all those years ago. Thinking about it... I'm unsure if Tom Hanks ever played any superhero characters, love to him play one.

Love Tom Hanks, so I'd be incredibly excited if he ever decided to join! :)

Hank McCoy in X-Men.

J. Jonah Jameson variant

Uncle Ben through flashbacks or variant

Those are my first gut castings. Any other thoughts or ideas?

I know they have no shame and Disney will never stop mining their classic animated features to death, but I wish people would stop supporting them. The only way end this ugly, unimaginative, lazy sludge is to stop supporting it financially.

And while I know parents will drag their kids to see this regardless of quality, I personally have seen enough of current Hollywood's "deconstructionism" and demoralization and wish there was truly something new, risk taking, and inspired out there.

@Feralwookiee - I rather they do new fairy tails or adapt them closer to the books but I’m kinda hyped for this movie.

@TheSuperMex - They'll do Bluebeard and Princess and the Pea soon. I don't particularly like their live-action adaptations (besides Jungle Book. I loved that one!) but as long as they also do new stuff, I don't care. People complaining about Disney not innovating will never not be unintentionally hilarious. How many times are they supposed to completely revolutionize fimmaking exactly?

@Feralwookiee -

I 1000% agree.

Lion king never should have made a billion at the box office. It was terrible and boring and my family literally turned it off 30 minutes in to just watch the original instead.

@HulkisHoly - Yeah. From what I've seen of them, most of the remakes seem pretty soulless.

Not that I like it, but if they insist on remaking any of their old animated movies, they should pick from the lesser known or less commercially successful movies. But, again, that would be taking a "risk" instead of just coasting on the nostalgia of already successful childhood memories.

I'd be ok with a live action remake of Atlantis or The Black Cauldron.

He wouldn’t do a long term contract so it would have to be a one off. I’ll go out of left field and place him as Mr Sinister.

@TheSuperMex - Actually that’s more fitting I was just focusing on MCU. Hugo Strange is perfect for Hanks.

Hanks is correct about MCU movies having no great performances in them. A few clever ones but nothing like Heath Ledger as Joker.

Hanks is indeed correct.

For some reason the good Reverend William Stryker comes to mind.

I'd love for him to just sink his teeth into a bad guy role.
