DRACULA: NBC Commits to 10-Episode Freshman Series

Dracula, the undead star of film, television and, of course, the original Bram Stoker novel, is getting ready to take a bite out of prime time in a new NBC TV series that has a 10-episode commitment.

Jonathan Rhys-Meyers (best known from the television series The Tudors -- which also happened to have served as most people's introduction to Man of Steel star Henry Cavill) will star in the title role.

Set in the 1890s, in the show Dracula will have two personas: first as an American businessman who has supposedly come to London in an effort to introduction modern science to Victorian society. But his true agenda is retribution against the world he had fought against centuries earlier. Things go awry, however, when he meets a woman who appears to be the reincarnation of his long dead wife.

Offers NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt, "In a world of Twilight and True Blood with contemporized stories, it's great to go back to the original. The [Bram Stoker] book is still fresh and we have an original, incredible script. We're very excited about it and it's going right to series. There's a Tudors sensibility to Dracula and it's set in the 1896 period while looking to the future. It's a really cool new version of Dracula."

I don't think there was an article about it on the site, but Starz! announced they were also developing a series called Vlad Dracula from J. Michael Straczynski and Rob Tapert.

That series will blend the historical facts of the 15th century Prince of Wallachia with the fictional Dracula. The show will follow him on his journey from a revered ruler to the world's most feared vampire, and his downfall as he struggles to hang on to his humanity, his wife and his kingdom.

marvel72 -- some family issues have kept me away, but I've been stockpiling a lot of interviews which I'll start posting soon.

And, yes, I'm pretty psyched about Man of Steel, though the trailer should have had a few seconds more footage of Superman himself.

Tag onto the skirts of TWILIGHT much?

This sounds ridiculous!

What GRIF said!

this made up contrived crap on!

For the very first time, I actually agree with GRIF. It's going to flop. Why are these networks copying each other? What a total waste of time and money. Unlike money...time can not be replaced.

More vampires? Sigh. Won't watch one episode. Pick a new genre fellas. Think Dr. Pepper, be an original!

... And yet, this has nothing to do with comic books nor movies. This site stays littered with wasted articles. No offense to the author, but come on...

Its actually a joint production with a few British TV producers like Carnival Flims who do Downtown Abbey and Sky Living. These guys are well versed in delivering period dramas and with Jonathan Rhys-Meyers fresh from the successful Tudors period piece involved, his fanbase can contribute to a decent start to the show.

Sure we have a lot of vampire shows on tv but they are all contemporary dramas or aimed at teenagers. This has the potential to deliver a more mature quality show as well as being about the most famous vampire in the genre.

RaleighAntrobus-
Dracula is a character that inspired vampires as the living dead in various other works. We have Morbius the living vampire, his character in Blade, and even a animated tale of Batman vs. Dracula. These are barely scratching the surface.
So don't say it has NOTHING to do with comic books and their movies. It's over dramatic.

And yet, THIS SHOW still has nothing to do with either comic books nor movies. Most of you geeks just want a reason to talk about anything on this site.

Dracula trying to find retribution ?....[frick] that....Dracula should be a evil son of a bitch and the show needs a John Harker and Van Helsing as the heroes of the series trying to take down Dracula.

Fail !!!

This doesn't sound too promising, but at least maybe we'll finally get to see a vampire that's not all sparkly or a whiny little bitch. Time for vampires to man up.

Still sounds a lot better than that crappy "Munsters" ripoff NBC is doing.

@CaptainPresley dude he had the moves down perfect. Maybe a little wooden, but al most as good as Kurt Russell. The movie did play like Mexican tv though. Oh wait it was a mini series wasn't it? Anyway, there's no denying that Match Point was badass though.

"Great to go back to the original"????
I suggest then that they actually read it!!!
From the above description, it bears as about as much resemblance to the cast iron classic as I do to Superman!!
What next..an American Sherlock???...hang on ..just a minute.
I live in Scarborough UK ...18 miles away from where the Demeter crashes, and Whitby Abbey and the graveyard etc etc.
So set in London then ...Google Maps ...spot the difference.

Whenever I hear about a film or TV show that is going to be using a character that originated or in comics, I always wonder why they don't just take what was done in the comics and put it on film. Marvel's Dracula (who was that, Wolfman and Colan?) was the best. Recreating that on film would destroy everything that's been done or being done now. When are these Hollywood producers going to realize that the best stories have already been told, in comics? All you have to do is pull out an old comic and there's your screenplay, go make it real.

tazmaniak - 7/25/2012, 10:04 AM
@ULTIMOSPIDER, I believe the article is mistaken. He's not looking for retribution. The story I read said he was looking for revenge against those who ruined him centuries before. It's actually the exact opposite.

@bretlfc and DragonofDarknessXIII, he's not American. He's pretending to be American.
cosmicstranger
cosmicstranger - 7/25/2012, 10:41 AM
Hold on, Dracula is "introducing" science from the U.S. to a Victorian civilation? If memory serves, the U.S. was VERY far behind in science in contrast to Western and Central Europe during that time. Given that context, anyone could spot Dracula as a charlatan! The series could conceivably be completed in 10 MINUTES.

Retribution and revenge mean the same thing.
tazmaniak
tazmaniak - 7/25/2012, 2:30 PM
I know, but I think ULTIMOSPIDER and others were reading it as if the retribution is coming from Dracula. I mispoke when I said your article was mistaken. The articles I've read always use revenge, while you use retribution. They do mean the same thing, but I think revenge is clearer and to the point. Retribution sounds more like someone is out for justice, while revenge is more about punishing/hurting those who wronged you. I think revenge fits the article.

Anyway, sorry if I offended or insulted you. The article wasn't at fault, it was just the way some people were interpreting it.

Not to piss against anyones tree here, but I think Jonathan Rhys-Meyers looks a bit too young to portrait Dracula...
