Director Leigh Wannell
(Upgrade) has shared our first look at his upcoming adaptation of
The Invisible Man, and it's clear that this is going to be a very different on the classic horror tale.
Elisabeth Moss (
Handmaid's Tale) plays a woman named Cecilia Kass, who is trapped in a violent, controlling relationship with a wealthy and brilliant scientist (Oliver Jackson-Cohen from
The Haunting of Hill House). When she finally gets away from him he seemingly commits suicide and leaves her his vast fortune, but the truth is far more sinister, and Cecilia must try to convince those around her that her abusive ex is very much alive.
“The image of the Invisible Man in the floating trench coat and the floating sunglasses is one that is clearly etched into the public consciousness,” Whannell tells
EW. “I wanted to kind of get away from that and make something that was really modern, really grounded, or as grounded as you can be when you’re dealing with a film called The Invisible Man. Just something that was really tense and scary in a way The Invisible Man hasn’t been before."
