Variety is reporting that Jon Spaihts - who has previously worked on the science fiction films Prometheus and The Darkest Hour - has been tapped by Universal Pictures to reboot their film franchise The Mummy. The series, which starred Brendan Fraser, has consisted of three films (and two spin-offs) and spawned an animated series, video games and comic books. The last film in the franchise, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, took in $401 million worldwide, indicating that Universal is still interested in the franchise. Jeffrey Kirschenbaum is overseeing the project for Universal, while Sean Daniel (who produced the other films) is returning as producer.

In addition, Spaihts talks about the scale he wants to open the reboot up to, comparing it to Prometheus. "I see it as the sort of opportunity I had with Prometheus: to go back to a franchise's roots in dark, scary source material, and simultaneously open it up to an epic scale we haven't seen before."

Do you think a reboot of The Mummy series is a good idea?

Soooo...it's safe to say that the film industry has run out of ideas.

First?

hmmm...not sure how to feel about this. The first Mummy was great and the second was ok, but the third wasnt that good. Though id like to see a sequel (like the rumoured 4th film "The Mummy: Rise of the Aztecs" im fine with a reboot.

The Third Mummy movie was shit. The talent of Jet Li and Michelle Yoew (sp?) was wasted.

if they reboot it they should try to make it a horror film in the vein of the original 30's film. It'd be a nice change from the adventure format.

Umm...why? First movie was very entertaining, but after that, not so good. I pretty much agree with thedude2936. Make more movies with mummies if you want to, but do something different from this series.

wow, rebooting the mummy.....number 1 and 2 were great. I don't understand how they could have left the Scorpion King the way they did in his spinoff... I thought that is ultimately where the plot holes started appearing in the franchise imo.

reboot? already? I feel like I just saw the 3rd one not too long ago. I'm down for a completely fresh take on the Mummy but not a re-make of the Brendan Fraser flick. I don't want to see the same story, same characters, different actors crap that Hollywood likes to dish.

Why not? Those movies were garbage, can't possibly do worse. Less Indiana Jones, more horror.

Why not. Ain't costin' me anything.

The series was entertaining.

Let's see what day' got.

Mummy should use that highlander quote... "there can be only one".

2 and 3 were über shit.

The 1st was a homage to indy IMO.

Why not make another sequel? There was a hint in the last movie that they were going to be dealing with aztec mummies after that. Could have been interesting.

Idk, I kinda liked all three. They weren't particularly great but, they were entertaining.

I fear a straight horror film will be a bit boring. Why not just continue the series with the son taking the star role(especially if they got a new actor)? The Aztec story could have been a good next step.

Btw @covert, I LOVED that cartoon!

I wouldn't mind a reboot of The Mummy, tho I thought the last three were really great. but, I would've like too seen how Brendan Fraser's saga would have played out. like how @darthbobtarkas stated, Aztec mummies would be interesting?)

I thought they all sucked to various degrees of suckage. Just a ridiculous thing to even think about rebooting. The only way it might work is if they make it an actual adult horror flick..but it'll prob still be rubbish either way.

I understand if its a horror version of the Mummy story. With great actors and great script that would be awesome.

cookfreeodie@ Not a bad idea. They should continue the series with the O´Connel son as the main character and someone like... maybe... Chris Hemsworth playing him.

FRICK THIS!!!! Hollywood is so fricked up. Absolutely no reason to reboot this series whatsoever. How about you come of with a whole new character and story. That would be fine. No need to bank of a series that is barley 10 years old. Come up with a new timless story and character
AlexDeLarge87
AlexDeLarge87 - 4/4/2012, 1:33 PM
ror@ The first one was the best and the second had it moments but it all went downhill when The Rock stepped in the screen with his Scorpion body.
And OH MY GOD dont even mention the lousy spinoff movie called The Scorpion King.

CapFan79 - 4/4/2012, 1:36 PM
The first film was okay because it had an Indiana Jones "feel" and was funny. The 2nd and 3rd were terrible.

They need a real actor/performer to be the Mummy. Like Karloff.

Though I like Coppola's Dracula and Branagh's Frankenstein they were lacking in the "monster" department. Didn't bother to see Wolf Man.
CapFan79
CapFan79 - 4/4/2012, 1:42 PM
It's no different than all the horror films back in the day. Sure we all know Dracula dn Frankenstein but don't forget "Dracula's Daughter", "Son of Frankenstein", "Frankenstein meets The Wolfman", "The Mummy's Curse", etc. They milkled and remade stuff then and they still do it. Nothing has changed.

I'm with @SuspenseSmith, lol. Let's stop making "reboots" and start making "whoops, let's just try that one again"
AlexDeLarge87
AlexDeLarge87 - 4/4/2012, 1:47 PM
They could make Imhotep really creepy like Karloff was!

I could see someone like Javier Bardem playing the role. Yeah yeah i know he is Spanish but he has that scary look and acting talent.

There isn't a lac of originality in filmaking today. It's always been that way and people have always said that, but evry ten years or so a group of people come to realize it and think its a new thing. Remember al of the mindless action films, and buddy cop movies of the 80s and 90's and all the remakes from the 60's - 90's. I mean Al Pacinos Scarface and The Wizard of Oz were remakes or "reboots" but you never hear about that. What's unoriginal is bringing said unoriginality to light as if it is a recent trend.

ralfinader - 4/4/2012, 1:56 PM
A reboot to a recent remake that redirected the franchise from horror to generic adventure. That is re-goddam-diculous.

However, I will take a Mummy reboot every year if they promise to never reboot that celluloid abortion called Van Helsing.

I enjoyed the first two. Kinda fell asleep on the 3rd one lol, but it wasn't terrible.
And I got a wacky idea: i would like to se Brandon Routh taking Fraser's place, in a darker and horror-ier reboot.

I understand rebooting comic book movies because most of the time there is a lot of unused source material. But rebooting the Mummy seems like a horrible idea. The original movies were not that spectacular to begin with. Don't get me wrong I liked them, but I don't plan to see them again with new actors.
