UPDATED: Ridley Scott To Direct A New Blade Runner Installment!

After a lot of rumors and talks about another Blade Runner film, we now have a confirmation that there will indeed be a new installment with Ridley Scott returning to direct. Deadline has more info:

"After revisiting his classic Alien with the upcoming 3D Fox film Prometheus, Ridley Scott is committing to direct and produce a film that advances his other seminal and groundbreaking science fiction film. Scott has signed on to direct and produce a new installment of Blade Runner."

Now, many people are excited for Prometheus, which is a new take on the Alien mythology with different characters. I would say he might do the same with a new Blade Runner. Will it be a prequel, a sequel or a brand new take without Harrison Ford? Well, no one knows that yet, but after this, more details should be available soon. As you know, the 1982 film was based on Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and in my opinion, it's one of the best science fiction films ever made. So, what do you think? Do you want to see a new Blade Runner film?

UPDATE: And here is the press release just to confirm the story:

LOS ANGELES, CA, AUGUST 18, 2011—Three-time Oscar-nominated director Ridley Scott is set to helm a follow up to his own ground-breaking 1982 science fiction classic “Blade Runner” for Warner Bros-based financing and production company Alcon Entertainment (“The Blind Side,” “The Book of Eli”).

Alcon co-founders and co-Chief Executive Officers Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove will produce with Bud Yorkin and Cynthia Sikes Yorkin, along with Ridley Scott. Frank Giustra and Tim Gamble, CEO’s of Thunderbird Films, will serve as executive producers.

The filmmakers have not yet revealed whether the theatrical project will be a prequel or sequel to the renowned original.

Alcon and Yorkin recently announced that they are partnering to produce “Blade Runner” theatrical sequels and prequels, in addition to all television and interactive productions.

The original film, which has been singled out as the greatest science-fiction film of all time by a majority of genre publications, was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” The film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 1993 and is frequently taught in university courses. In 2007, it was named the 2nd most visually influential film of all time by the Visual Effects Society.

State Kosove and Johnson: “It would be a gross understatement to say that we are elated Ridley Scott will shepherd this iconic story into a new, exciting direction. We are huge fans of Ridley’s and of the original ‘Blade Runner.’ This is once in a lifetime project for us.”

Scott is represented by David Wirtschafter at WME and David Nochinson at Ziffren Brittenham.

Released by Warner Bros. almost 30 years ago, “Blade Runner” was adapted by Hampton Fancher and David Peoples from Philip K. Dick’s groundbreaking novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” and directed by Scott following his landmark “Alien.” The film was nominated for two Academy Awards (Best Visual Effects, and Best Art Direction). Following the filming of “Blade Runner,” the first of Philip K. Dick’s works to be adapted into a film, many other of Dick’s works were likewise adapted, including “Total Recall,” “A Scanner Darkly,” “Minority Report,” “Paycheck,” and the recent “The Adjustment Bureau,” among others.

Thanks to Collider for the press release.

This is another one of those cases where the movie is great the way it is. I like stand alone stories, it's makes the mystery more exciting.Making another movie will lead into more movies, books, tv series or whatever and we will all get sick of it. (STAR WARS)

Blade Runner was groundbreaking. But a sequel or prequel nearly 30 years after the original? Why? I know there were 3 novels written after the first movie, so, I guess that would give them material to work with.

@MaddMonkk -- i'm with ya, this is dangerously close to "let's take the easy route b/c i'm outta ideas and we can make a quick buck" philosophy that has given us so many shyte remakes. however, it is ridley scott so if he can do something basically completely unique then i'm for it, i guess.

blade runner does lend itself to a sequel. the sean young character is a replicent that has yet to be caught.

Well here is my problem, all of these remakes, prequell whatever. Can they make itwith that 80-90's feel how u would see on tv? Iam I alone on this! CGI is great but that 80-90's feel to it!

It will be good as long as he sticks to the original blueprint, and makes it an intellectual film instead of a high flying sci-fi film. Though Roy Batty expired at the conclusion of the orig film, I'd really like to see Rutger Hauer play a part in the new installment.

i dunno Alien is a long running franchise with sequels from a number of directors so a prequel doesn't really bother me.

Blade Runner is a stand alone piece and I just don't see the point in this. There are plenty of other sci-fi stories to adapt why revisit one thats already been done so well?

Wow, I love the original, and don't know if we necessarily need another Blade Runner....but if it's gonna happen, hey, at least it's Ridley Scott himself.

The only film I've seen that captures the same surreal feeling of Blade runner is Dark City. WHile I'm not a huge BR fan, I think it should be left alone.

Besides, with Scott directing I'm noy looking forward to Russel Crowe taking over for Harrison Ford.

There are two BIG questions burning in my mind - will the script suck, and can Scott convince the original cast members to sign on? As for the first, Scott wouldn't do it if the script was a POS, so I guess that point is moot, but as for the second... Sean Young isn't doing anything (or rather hasn't been doing anything signifigant for oh... 20 or so years), but Harrison is another matter. He COULD be the one problem in this dream sequel.

That's great! I'm all in if he's going to bring us a different story in the same universe, like Prometheus.

Much better than the Total Recall remake that discards the old version (mind that this is an example, not that Total Recall can be compared to Blade Runner).

Did we really need another movie in the Alien Universe not really but where getting one with whole new cast and different story that expands that universe. So do we need another Blade Runner movie not necessarily but I'd rather see a sequel done by Scott than a remake by some other [frick]er, It will probably be different characters and story this time round.

maybe ridley scott would keep with actors his worked with before i.e russell crowe, michael fassbender & so on.

I'm all for it. I agree with the comments above about maintaining the original look, but I'd like to see them incorporate that look of Decker's world into some kick-ass 3D IMAX immersion experience.

As for Dark City being untouchable: I would have lovedLovedLOVED that film if it hadn't been for Kiefer Sutherland's simpering Peter Lorre impersonation. He completely ruined it for me. I have not been able to enjoy a film with him in it since, or even watch him anywhere without squirming uncomfortably.

This is very interesting.

Blade Runner is perfectly ripe for a sequel.

Plus it keeps Ridley away from the Monopoly movie. : )
