USER EDITORIAL: If Samuel L. Jackson is a Racist, Why Did We Change the Color of Nick Fury?

Recently, in the March issue of Ebony magazine, Samuel L. Jackson, the guy that Marvel picked to be the NEW, non-white Nick Fury in their comics and movies, made it known that he voted for President Obama solely because of the color of his skin and NOT the content of his character.

As most of you know, the character of Nick Fury was a white man in the comics until the Ultimate Marvel Universe, where he was changed to be an African-American, with his look and personality tailored after actor Samuel L. Jackson with the actor's permission. Jackson portrays Nick Fury in the 2008 film Iron Man and reprised the role in the sequel, and in Captain America: The First Avenger. He also appears uncredited as Fury in Thor, and is set to appear as in the 2012 film The Avengers.

Here is the actual quote from Ebony Magazine:

"I voted for Barack because he was black. ’Cuz that’s why other folks vote for other people — because they look like them,” Jackson said. “That’s American politics, pure and simple. [Obama’s] message didn’t mean shit to me. In the end, he’s a politician. I just hoped he would do some of what he said he was gonna do."

This turn of events is nothing if not ironic since changing Fury into an African-American was Marvel's attempt at being racially sensitive by bringing more ethnic diversity into their universe. So much for being "politically correct".

Of course, Mr. Jackson's political views are his own, and he is entitled to them. It is just disappointing that someone who is identified with an obvious attempt to be inclusive of other races is himself, NOT.

He may also just be a hardcore liberal democrat and would've voted that way in any case. It's hard to say. Maybe he would've voted for Hermain Cain if things had been different, but either way, the fact that he openly admits to not caring about Barack Obama's views, but only that he was black is pretty damning. That is not what Martin Luther King wanted for his people.

Is this a surprise? A lot of black people voted for Obama because he is black.

Side note: OBAMA for 2012!

"[Obama’s] message didn’t mean shit to me. In the end, he’s a politician. I just hoped he would do some of what he said he was gonna do."

Am I the only one who finds that not making sense, how would he hope Obama would do what he said if Obama's word didn't mean anything to him to begin with?

This is my article. I figured it would get some attention, but I wrote it respectfully to start a discussion. Personally, I don't think Sammy should be making political statements at all when he holds these kinds of views. He was chosen to be the face of the new racially sensitive Marvel, and now he's kind of screwing that. I'll bet they are pissed! You can check out the full article and see more of what he said at the source link.

But what is the point of this article? He's a black guy who voted for a black politician, not because of his political stance, but because he is black. How is he racist?

It would have been racist had he said he didn't vote for the other candidates solely because they were white.Or, if he had said he didn't vote for Obama because he was black.

Do you know how many people don't give a crap about politics or a candidates stance? They just vote for who they find appealing. And a lot of times it's either based on how they look or if that person comes from the same region they do.

It can't be a shock that some people, black and white, voted for him solely because he was black. That's not racist.Or that people didn't vote for him because he was black. Now, that actually is racist, but that's how a lot of people think.

A lot of times a candidates position plays very little into a person's decision on who they will vote for. It's generally going to be based upon that person representing the party you always vote for, that person being from your state, that person being someone you personally know or know through acquaintances or any number of factors.

It's also not surprising that a black man in his 60s, giving the way the government has treated black people over the years, doesn't put much stock in what any politician has to say.Black or white. He just decided that maybe things would be better off for him with a black president. The way the election turned out, I'd wager a lot of people also felt this way.

Again, how is this racist and what does it have to do with Jackson playing Nick Fury?

I will admit, its was cool as hell to see a man of color being the president since all the other ones for 100s of years were only white males, but I moreso voted for him because of what he said he was gonna do to put the country back in order from the shitstain that Bush left and is still suffering from today. But there are a lot of black people who voted for Obama because of his race and there's a lot that voted for the issues.

Dmon, you are aware that Powergirl's avatar is a picture of...Powergirl right? Jesus

As for this, I believe Jackson was commenting more on the state of politics than he was on race, plus I think he may have been joking at that. Even if he wasn't thsi still isn't racist, it's not like he came out and said: "Hey muffuggas, I hate white folks". Doesn't calling someone a racist outright like that when there is no proof amount to libel?

He was elected because he's a likable, charismatic, intelligent individual. He said "change", "we can do better". And a bunch of other generalizations that got apothetic individuals off their sofas. He was also running against a patriot that decided to make a comlete windbag his running mate. That didn't hurt either

Wow this is so ridiculous.. Those comments do not make him a racist.. I'm sure 99% of Americans don't know the politicians views but vote for them merely based on Race/religion/political offiliatians.. To say he's a racist is a bit strong and honestly this site is not the forum for this discussion..

I'm pretty sure racist is an improper term in this instance.

So...whoever wrote this article is a full-fledged retard.

Back on subject, Samuel L. Jackson basically did what a good portion of the nation does and voted for a candidate he related to on some level, even if it was just the color of his skin. Good ol' Whitey has been doing that for the last two centuries or so, so everyone just chill.

Also, in this case, [frick] the Avengers. Samuel L. Jackson is [frick]ing Samuel L. Jackson, cooler and more badass than all comic books combined.

This article was obviously submitted by a thirteen-year-old boy or something.

I think if Samuel Jackson and Obama were white and Jackson said those words, there would be many people questioning if he was a racist. Too many famous African Americans living in the United States of America get away with many racist comments.

I voted for Obama for a number of reasons:
* He's not influenced by prejudice brought on by religious organizations or groups.
* He is very much opposed to war, which has been taking the friends that I grew up with away little by little.
* Most importantly, despite whatever allegations made to his character, he was the lesser of the two evils running for President.

About Sam, well this is no revelation - the man is a rebel, was a member of the Black Panther party, and although this was a long time ago, he threatened to blow up a college building full of school board trustees - the man was literally a terrorist for a time. I don't care about his politics. He's one of my favorite actors though.
