Brett Ratner Insults Jon Favreau's Iron Man While Seeking More Comic Book Movies to Ruin

MTV got some more whiney comments from X3 director and comic book movie killer Brett Ratner, and the guy can't help but put down Iron Man!

"I would do any superhero movie that I was asked to do... But I wouldn’t have been interested in 'Iron Man.' I have a lot of respect for [Jon Favreau], because to me, it was a B-character. But look what he did."

CBM: I think I detect a bit of jealousy in this backhanded "compliment."

More from MTV's Splash Page...
The ever-outspoken Ratner — who has achieved a “love him or hate him” status among fans — lamented to MTV that he nearly landed a franchise character (namely Superman) but eventually passed on the chance to direct Big Blue’s return to cinemas. He now worries that the ship has sailed on notable characters that have mainstream box office appeal.

CBM: Awww. poor baby.

"I was so upset when I left 'Superman,'" said Ratner. "Singer has his 'X-Men,' Nolan has 'Batman' — there’s nothing left. 'Hulk' has been exploited already. There’s nothing left for me... I mean, I’m not going to go and do the Silver Surfer or something," shrugged Ratner.

CBM: Hell no. Silver Surfer is SUCH a "B" character. The great Ratner couldn't possibly lower himself to direct a crappy property like that. Instead, he's going to do a horrible revamp of Conan, and he’s directing an adaptation of Rob Liefeld’s “Youngblood” (A more reputable brand than Silver Surfer?).

If Hollywood EVER listens to the fans, listen to this. DO NOT LET RATNER GET HIS HANDS ON ANOTHER COMIC BOOK MOVIE!

Holy shit I wish he would have directed Superman, perhaps Supes would have actually hit someone. Anything is better than that fairy trash Singer did.

I really don't know why everyone is so down on Brett Ratner, I thought X-3 was pretty good I mean if we are to take our aggression out on someone let it be Singer. The guy took the most recognizable classic comic book character in the world and basically F#%ked him right in the a$$ I mean seriously wheres the lynch mob for that jerk.

Does he not understand how rediculously big the marvel universe is? there is more to it than the 3 superheros he mentioned.

to be fair, Ratner is a dreadful director. He has no consideration for plot - I listened to the directors commentary of Rush Hour ages ago and noticed how he sacrificed plot and story for the action. Which quite frankly he probably had little to do with, aside from deciding "I want action here, you make action here"

Oh come off it Ratner! what a premadona! This guy needs to move on...or does he not understand that he can't make comic movies?

Singer laid the groundwork for X3 to be fantastic... then it was rewritten over and over again. That's the real problem: the story, not the direction.

However, I have to take issue with Rat calling Iron Man a B character. Iron Man has appeared in Tales of the Strange since 1963 (Iron Man started in 1968) and the Avengers since 1964. How does starring in two comics a month make him a B character?

In fairness he has a point. Im not saying Iron Man was a B character, but he certainly wasnt as popular as say XMen or Spiderman. I for one was not a fan before Favreaus movie so what he said was true from a certain perspective.

Now onto the Singer bashers. i love how people forget that if it wasnt for him reinventing the superhero movie with X Men, we prob wouldnt have the influx of them that we have today. And then to blame him for the almighty [frick] up that was X3 because he left to make Superman Returns(which was a great movie regardless of the fact it didnt have enough action. What are you people, 8 years old? Does something have to be exploding every 10 minutes to hold your interest?) Anyway, [frick] Ratner, hes a hack plain and simple. Was X3 terrible? No, i actually enjoyed a lot of it..but it should have been 100 times better than it was, especially coming off the back of one of the best comic movies ever in X2.

Superman Returns wasn't a total bomb and if Ratner directed it, sure it would probably have more action but it would most likely be at the sacrifice of everything else. With an added little something Ratner saw on YouTube that he thought was funny tossed into the mix. Maybe its just me but I'd sacrifice a little mindless action in favor of story every time. If a Superman fan wants Brett Ratner to direct a movie based on their favorite character then they'd just be condemning their hero to a lazy, dumb-down, explosion fest. You may as well just give the franchise over to Michael Bay.

Anyway, I'd keep this guy away from all comicbook franchise because he clearly doesn't know shit about it, as he has proven time and again in his interviews. He's a hack.

X-3 wasnt THAT bad but Ratner killed off so many characters he pretty much killed off the franchise! It would now need a reboot (probably not a bad thing anyway) I was suprised to find out that Ratner is executive producer of Prison Break, a damn good TV show so maybe he should focus more on producing than directing?

As for Superman, anyone would have been better than Singer! Smallville has dragged its heels turning Clark Kent into Superman and eve though that version cant fly he at least fights...the Superman in returns felt like a pansy! I dont care about his son, I want action and action doesnt meen you have to sacrifice a good story!

I don't really appreciate the backhanded Youngblood comment (one of my favorite comics), but overall true.

And Ratner does know that Iron Man ran the Marvel Universe for like the past two years, right? And that he is a founding Avenger, right? B character my ass.

And to dismiss one of the most most powerful beings in the Marvel U (SS) makes me wish I had the Power Cosmic to reduce him to nothingness.

If you think about it all Ratner did is put himself down. Cause if Jon Favreau can take a B character and make him a box office hit. Then what does that make Ratner? And I agree with Torque. The marvel universe is HUGE! He made himself sound very childish and unimaginative. Both things I would never want in a director. -Nuff said-

I don't think he insulted Favreau, he said Iron Man was a B character and look what he did with it. It was a compliment. And Iron Man WAS a second tier character. To anyone other than comic book fans, and Marvel ones at that, Iron Man was just kinda...familiarish...

Founding avenger, ran Marvel Universe, blah blah...like I said, no one but the fans knows that. He's not a household name like superman...and we saw what Ratner did with that.

The point is, F Ratner and and Yay favreau.

Superman Returns wasnt that bad!..I just got through watching it yesterday. Fans complain too much about how some missing action is not included!..Hell, let Hollywood stay away from comic book adaptations and see how desperate yall will really get?!...As for Ratner, he sounded like a jealous punk b#%ch!..Let him direct Ant-man, Submariner, and other useless marvel characters..But please stay away from Silver Surfer, my favorite out of the entire marvel universe doesnt need a director with an ego like Ratner..X3 on the other hand wasnt that much of a f#&%kup!..Lots of action does good for a movie like X3..

True enough. I thought X-3 was entertaining, but the fact that he killed off so many important charactes (Cyclops, Jean, Prof, so on) completely put an end to that franchise, which is horrible because I was looking forward to seeing sentinels and Apocolypse on the big screen. Now they have to reboot it in order to get to that point again. Lame.

And Sortis... I agree with you. Uwe Boll is the worst director ever!

I don't demand 2 hours of mindless non-stop action in my comic book movies, but one of the many reasons I hated Superman Returns was not ENOUGH action. Superman barely appeared in his own movie! We didn't even see Luthor and Superman in the same place until the climax of the movie! A lot of the fun of a Luthor appearance is him getting in Supes' face and messing with him, like "You know what I'm going to do and you can't stop me!" More direct interaction between the two characters would have made for a more interesting movie.

As for X3, since that's coming up in this thread also, I basically enjoyed it, largely for all the different characters that appeared, but it had one huge flaw (there are other smaller flaws too, but that's for another post): Two great and interesting stories, each of which was worth a movie of its own, crammed together. Neither story was developed properly or fully, and the narrative suffered. It felt like they were trying to do way too much at once. I did enjoy getting to finally see the Juggernaut on screen (one of my favorite villains), and I was proven right that Kelsey Grammer would make an excellent Beast.

well his lack of understanding the marvel universe and x-men itslef explains why the movies he made sucked balls . . . but these movies make so much money we the fans are gonna have to deal with greedy directors that can care less about the franchise itself and are just in it for the money. its a harsh reality i know!

X3 Sucked. Superman Returns sucked. And silver surfer is WAY cooler then youngblood. Ratner is stupid if he thinks there is no one left to do in the marvel universe. He's not looking hard enough. I think a Dr. Strange movie would be sweet.

Ratner couldn't direct a successful bowel movement.

Which is odd, since all of his movies are shit.

Also, after reading some comments I have to add, Singer's X-Men movies were incredible and did change the scope of comic book movies. With that said, he blew the Superman reboot (rorschach01, I love ya buddy but that movie was lame.) and left too much undone for people to completely give him his due. At least IMO. He would've been much better off closing out the trilogy in grand fashion, then he could've made his touchy, feely, superman the stalker movie and most people would still be satisfied.

Oh, and a HELL YEAH for GUNSMITH

What a douche bag. Hey I got an idea... maybe he should go direct another Rush Hour Movie, cause that was amazing...NOT.

Even better, he should do a movie about cypher, the bilingual super hero!! One douche for another.
Maybe he should go give mustache rides in 3rd world countries... douche.

I'm not bitter.
