Regal Cinemas Announce Plans To Close ALL Theaters Until Further Notice From Tomorrow

The first major US theater chain to close its doors due to the coronavirus has been revealed this afternoon as Regal Cinemas has announced plans to shut down for an indefinite period from tomorrow!

This is probably a sign of things to come, but Regal Cinemas has now confirmed plans to shut down all theater locations across the United States from Tuesday, March 17th for an indefinite period.

This is being done in a bid to halt the spread of the coronavirus, and as the second biggest chain in the country with 7,155 screens in 542 theaters across 42 of our great states, they're the first of the big three to take such extreme measures. We can likely expect the others to soon follow suit.

Sadly, unless something drastic happens in the coming weeks, Black Widow will almost certainly be delayed because it's not going to have any theaters to play in. Earlier today, President Donald Trump held a press conference and warned that the pandemic could continue having an affect on day to day life until at least July or August.

"Any time, at any Regal, it’s our goal to provide a safe and healthy environment for our employees and guests," said Mooky Greidinger, Cineworld CEO to Deadline.

"At this time, we have made the difficult decision to close our theatres. We value our movie-loving customers and have no doubt we will be serving them again as soon as possible with a full slate of Hollywood blockbusters. The Cineworld Group and Regal Theatres are strong, standing on solid ground and our continued goal is to be The Best Place to Watch a Movie!"

This is sad news for film fans, and even sadder for Regal Cinemas employees if they're not being paid during this period. We will keep you apprised of more closures as they happen.

I hate to see institutions collapsing. There is a romantic notion to movie theaters that (for me personally) has sadly faded away a long time ago. But I still feel nostalgia for that romance.

Yes, these theaters will almost certainly reopen, but a lot of theaters (especially local ones) may not be able to weather a big interruption. And if studios are able to work out the logistics of same-day-pay-per-view, the dynamic will be changed forever.

I think it may be time for the other film studios to take a cue from Universal, and release their current films out On Demand. That way people can still watch/support the films they would have otherwise went out to see/supported if the pandemic wasn't going on.

This would also help reduce infection numbers if people had an option to not risk their health by just staying home and watching, say "Bloodshot" or "Sonic" from their couch.

@Beerus - I agree 100 %! They would still make tons of money since everyone will be stuck at home.

Had to get my Regal Unlimited frozen and considering how easy it was I knew this was coming. I was there on Friday and it was a ghost town. Unfortunately ended up finding out that my brother (who I went with) has been quarantined as he may have been exposed and I’m voluntarily quarantining pending his results, which didn’t end up mattering since I work in a gym and all of them in NYS are shitting down tonight until further notice. This situation blows all around.
