He's definitely influential to a lot of how science fiction has been presented for the second half of the 20th century

Films based on characters that Stan Lee created or co-created have grossed a total of $12.6 Billion worldwide to date. That total is set to grow by at least another billion this year alone. I'd say that makes him extremely influential.

If that isn't influential, then I don't know what is.

Why not? He's a legend that has influenced comic book creators,film-makers,television producers, artists and fanboys around the world. He and Jack Kirby created more comic book characters than anyone else in the industry,so if a magazine wants to honor him, there's no harm in that,he has earned his place in pop culture history.

I once read that he was the most influential author of the 20th century. Many big names (like, as I recall, a certain Cameron) have been influenced by him.

Regardless of whether or not that's true, he is still, and will always be, The Man. That guy could write.
