Universal's Cinematic Monster Universe Will Focus On "Action-Adventure" Instead Of Horror

This year, Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley participated in The Hollywood Reporter's annual film executive roundtable, along with five other studio heads. During the conversation Langley was asked if her studio's plans for a cinematic monster-shared universe is a way of competing against other studios that will be churning out superhero films.
LANGLEY: We have to mine our resources. We don't have any capes [in our film library]. But what we do have is an incredible legacy and history with the monster characters. We've tried over the years to make monster movies — unsuccessfully, actually. So, we took a good, hard look at it, and we settled upon an idea, which is to take it out of the horror genre, put it more in the action-adventure genre and make it present day, bringing these incredibly rich and complex characters into present day and reimagine them and reintroduce them to a contemporary audience.

Do you look at that as a positive or a negative?

Disappointing. We already have the various Action/Supernatural films like Brendan Frasier's The Mummy, the Underworld movies, Dracula Untold, I Frankenstein, the Blade Trilogy, etc... that MORE than compensates on action.

A Cinematic Universe on HORROR icons back to the roots the old 30s-40s Horror films would have been something special.

I haven't seen DU yet, but from the previews, I got the impression that it was still horror-ish? If so, then they will need to go in more of the Underworld & I, Frankenstein route.

I think it sounds cool. Those characters don't have the gravitas for "horror" in the contemporary sense. They were surpassed by the likes of Jason, Freddy, Leather face, & co decades ago, & even those have passed their own primes.

There's a new horror in town, & it looks like Saw, Insidious, Paranormal Activity & the like. These were preceded by the likes of The Grudge, & the Asian film genre.

IMO, horror is a genre that has to evolve with the times, otherwise it becomes stale & corny.

So I'm glad that Universal is shifting gears a bit, & going in a slightly different direction.

There hasn't been a truly "scary" Dracula movie in decades. People sitting around hoping for "horror" out of these characters, are basically wishing for these characters to continue to fail.

The only successes anyone has had from the vampire & werewolf genre in decades, is with Underworld, where they combined both genres, & contemporized them.

I personally liked I, Frankenstien. It was packed with action, & would serve as a great connector to their entire franchise, if they'd opted to merge it with Underworld.

I can see this working if its quality work. None of the old Universal monsters are all that scary anymore so why the hell not? Though I would still like a balance between horror and action.
