I have 2 great hobbies in my life, video gaming and comic books, and I have been doing both since I could hold a controller and cradle a book. You see, my father was, and still is, a huge geek. And as his only son, he naturally wanted to pass his love for these 2 things on to me, and boy have we had alot of fun. It's been exactly 21 years since I remember picking up my first comic. It was an Incredible Hulk, as FF and Hulk were my dad's fav's. But characters like the Hulk and Spiderman definitely seem cool, I thought the way alot of heroes obtained their powers was, well, silly sometimes, even at age 6 I remember feeling that way. And then dad showed me who the X-Men were. And I loved them. They didn't get there powers by radioactive spiders or cosmic radiation, they were mutants born with their powers. It was genetic. So, I held out in hopes that along with my first pubic hair, I'd be able to shoot lasers from my eyes. This is when comics became more than a hobby to me, and 21 years later from my first comic book experience, I have boxes upon boxes of books and I'm a total dork versed in the Mythos of comics, so much so I should teach college classes.
So here I am, closing in on 30, yet that childhood desire of manifesting superpowers is as strong today as it was 20 years ago. Yet, with such a large range of powers, what would I want. It might be cool to have Wolverines healing factor and claws, The Flash super speed, or maybe just the wings of Warren Worthington. Alot of people that know me or read my articles on this site would probably assume I'd want Gambits powers. Close! He is my favorite super powered person ever. His powers are Omega level(in Marvel Comics, a Mutant whose power is so strong they could destroy the planet single handedly. Anyone who doesn't believe me that Gambit is, you should really read more comics and learn about his origin and why he is endebted to Sinister.), I have to admit that his would be my silver medal. Telekinetic is what I'd have to go with. Telekinesis, once developed, allows it's user to do anything they can imagine through shear force of will. Things like flight, moving things with thought, and kinetic shielding immediately come to mind, but thats kids stuff. Those are the things the most basic telekinetic's pick up immediately. It's the ability to break down and manipulate matter on a subatomic level I'm after.
Some of the most powerful character's in comic book fiction are Telekinetic, like Jean Grey, Dr. Manhattan, Cable, Conner Kent, and many others. Imagine being able to transmute any object into another object at will. You could slow the movement of atoms and molecules, changing the state of matter in which they exist, like from gas to liquid to solid, or speed them up, dispersing them. How about just breaking an object to it's constituent molecules, then further breaking down the molecules into the individual atoms that comprise them, then dispersing the wave function of the electrons and protons, thereby completely obliterating the objects utter existence or an evidence thereof. Having such control over matter, you could generate atomic reactions, open wormholes in time and space, alter the density of anything, even create and destroy on an epic scale. Anything you can imagine is done by willpower at the speed of thought. Wow! All the power!
That's just me. What would your powers be? Think about if you already haven't. I know most of you probably have. :)
