Will we see a new Punisher soon on the big screen?

According IMDB, the not always reliable source, we may see Frank Castle in two Marvel Studios feature films in the near future.

If any of you have been on the IMDB page for "Captain America: The First Avenger" or the IMDB page for "The Avengers," you will notice on the cast list that an actor named Craig Fairbrass appears on both IMDB pages.

Next to his name, it says that he is rumored for the role of The Punisher.

Now most of you know that The Punisher has had a lengthly comic book movie history in the past twenty years. The first film was released in 1989 and starred action hero Dolph Lundgren. It changed many details from the comic book which included the disappearance of the famous skull on Castle's shirt. The second film was released in 2004 and starred Thomas Jane. This time they got the costume right, but it was just mediocre. More recently, we got a Punisher film by the name "Punisher: War Zone." This was released in 2008 and starred Ray Stevenson (who is playing Volstagg in Thor) and this was truly a hard R, action packed Punisher film. Unfortunately, this film did not even make half of it's $30 million budget. At the end of the film's theatrical run it only made $10,089,373. Now, if this new information about the Punisher from IMDB is true, this could mean Lionsgate has finally lost the rights to make another Punisher film, and Frank may now be able to exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

So if true: here is how I think The Punisher could appear in "Captain America: The First Avenger." We know that the bookends of the film will be in present-day, probably after Cap was frozen. The Nazis were searching for him, eventually found him, and Cap now resides in some secret base in World War II. After countless search efforts to find Cap, Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D hire Frank to search for the base, infiltrate, bring back the Star Spangled Avenger to be a part of the Avengers Initiative.

So, what are your thoughts on the Punisher possibly appearing in the Marvel Cinemtic Universe? Do you think Craig Fairbrass is right for the role? Post your thoughts and confirm/debunk in the comments below.

Have not gotten any confirmation Punisher will be in Cap or Avengers, I would think we would know by now if we had that.

@thabatman oh sorry. I think it would be cool to see the Punisher in the Marvel Cinematic Universe maybe after he finds Cap he will show up to help SHIELD from time to time but not become a member

Thanks for the heads up Ironbat95, although I'm not too sure for a number of reasons. As you said, this is from IMDB.

If this is true, however, your hypothesis about Frank working for SHIELD sounds a little like they might be going for the Ultimate version where he ends up being recruited for SHIELD activities.

It is great that MARVEL could be thinking about adding him in other films, so as to build interest in another film (done properly this time). I had always thought he would've appeared in a Spider-Man or Daredevil film had MARVEL gotten the rights back from them.

I'm just not too keen on him working for SHIELD, though. Much prefer him staying as a vigilante who dislikes superhumans, good or bad.

Nice work though! :)

I hope it's true, but in no way do I believe it!

Remember, The Avengers IMDB page had Jim from the Office listed as Cap, at one point.

And why for the Cap movie does it say "Punisher" and "The Punisher" for The Avengers. Why no mention of Frank Castle?

JoshCharmley - 6/13/2010, 5:26 PM
This might be cool. I actually liked the Punisher (2004) With Thomas Jane, and HATED War Zone! But if Marvel gets the rights back then they could do a Real Punisher Movie. I'd give it a chance. Not sure about having Him go find Cap though, lol sorry.
Ironbat95
Ironbat95 - 6/13/2010, 5:29 PM
@Joshcharm Yeah, I think the Punisher is a character that should be inroducd in other movies and then get a spinoff.
JoshCharmley
JoshCharmley - 6/13/2010, 6:00 PM
@Ironbat Yea I agree. Just not sure about S.H.I.E.L.D. hiring him to find the cap. But I do like the idea of him being re-introduced through a few other movies before giving him a reboot. Plus another Nice thing about that is, with doing it that way, we can skip the origin story when he gets another movie of his own.

I don't trust IMDB. More than likely it's just something some guy made up to get fans excited or mad.
marvelguy
marvelguy - 6/13/2010, 6:28 PM
They have rumored many things in the past. I just don't see a reasonable plot line in either movie for him.
The Cap movie will be his origin, freezing him, thawing and dealing with being missing for sixty years, and then joining the Avengers. I'm hoping they skip the whole Bucky idea since there's hardly room for him.
JoshCharmley
JoshCharmley - 6/13/2010, 7:32 PM
@marvelguy I agree on skipping the Bucky thing. I have to admit I'm NOT a fan of the sidekicks. I'm a Huge Batman fan, but never really cared much for Robin.
Ironbat95
Ironbat95 - 6/13/2010, 8:20 PM
@Marvelguy Bucky is a big part of Cap's origin, Bucky has been around from the beginning and it wouldn't be the same if he wasn't there. Plus, who wouldn't wanna see the Winter Solider?

i doubt it.

its frustrating because Punisher should be one of the easiest characters to adapt to a film. yet they can't get it right. wtf?
marvelguy
marvelguy - 6/14/2010, 3:57 PM
@Ironbat: I remember watching the old 60's cartoons in repeats and thinking: Bucky doesn't really have an alter ego. It won't work. The Winter Soldier could be done similarly without the goofiness of Bucky. Perhaps taking elements of Jack Monroe/Nomad's origin? Bucky is equally ridiculous to Robin. Cap would never have a secret identity if he has Bucky.
Just like Clark Kent having a white dog...

Thomas Jane was the best in my opinion and although I know it will never be done, I would like to see a sequel to his version. Hopefully nothing like War Zone that was seemed to happen in the 1990s...
McLovin
McLovin - 6/15/2010, 7:24 AM
This is total bullshit. I do however, hope that Marvel gets their hands on the Punisher and make him part of their movie continuity. He could have a minor role in Avengers and perhaps a larger one in A2.

Btw, anyone that prefers the Thomas Jane version of Punisher is not a true Punisher fan. If you really think that Frank would waste that much time using elaborate parlor tricks to get a mafia family to actually kill one another, than you have never appreciated the character for his awesome simplicity. Castle would not drive around with a fake fire hydrant and or waste time destroying some mafioso's illegal cargo. He would just KILL ALL OF THEM!!!!!! War Zone portrayed Punisher as he is. A cold stone killer who has no regard for how many bullets he will spray in a room. He would waste no time with all the shenanigans they had him doing in the Jane movie and exactly what he did in WZ, is what he does in his books. Walk in through the back of the house and kill everybody in sight. I also never saw him use a bow and arrow. If he wanted to be quiet, that's what silencers where made for.

Btw, yeah this guy Craig Fairbrass was born to play this role. He's freaking PERFECT!!!!!

CorndogBurglar - 6/15/2010, 10:28 AM
@ mclovin

thank you!!! or even worse. how about when Jane is poking that guy with the popsicle and telling him its fire?? yeah, that would happen. THey both sucked in my opinion.

Lundgren's punisher was the best adaptation of the character. but people don't like it because he doesn't wear the skull. lame.
loganoneil
loganoneil - 6/15/2010, 2:50 PM
Corndog - LUDGREN'S Punisher was the best?! What are you on and did you bring enough to share with the rest of us??! Did we even watch the same film?!! His 'portrayal' was a flat, one-dimensional farce that made the industry shy away from comic book movies for YEARS!

McLovin
McLovin - 6/16/2010, 8:03 AM
@ CDB - Ok, I can agree that Lundgren's performance was better than Jane's, but I will stick with Stevenson on this one. It's not that Jane is not a better actor than both these guys (cause he is ...), its that in order to play Frank Castle, you have to be completely deprived of all emotion. He is so far detached from anything that even remotely resembles feelings, that only an actor who is naturally "flat" can probably attain it and make it seem natural.

@ loganoneil - you have a point

btw, look at this Steve Dillon rendition of our favorite sociopath and tell me it's not dead on with the pic above

the last guy who played him was pretty good and had the looks. and i liked war zone. why does everyone hate it? it is as punisher should be. kicking ass with lots and lots of blood around the place. punishing people instead of planning revenge plans like tomas jane did. i loved tomas jane as punisher but war zone was way more faithful to the comics...

@ ironbat95 the only way to put more intrest in the punisher is reboot his ass long with daredevil & the ghost rider films.
then what you do is a three part story which crosses over with each film.
a one off epic tale against a foe that is the enemey of each one of the charactors involved.

Below is the synopsis for The Operative (from imdb)

The first installment of an urban action thriller, that charts the rise and fall of ex SAS operative John Beech and his family. After killing a terrorist informant and foiling a bomb blast in the city, Beech loses his beloved wife and teenage daughter in a horrific execution-style death. Fuelled by deepest pain, rage and precious memories of the family that once made his world complete, Beech must stop the terrorists at all costs and avenge the deaths of his loved ones

It even SOUNDS like a Punisher style film.

Anyone else think it may be on the cards?
