Following yesterday's Annihilation image debut, the first teaser trailer for Alex Garland's new sci-fi horror flick has been released, and this one looks like it could turn out to be something special.

Natalie Portman (Black Swan, Thor, the Star Wars prequels) stars as Lena, a scientist tasked with exploring a beautiful but deadly contaminated area which has been taken over by a powerful force. The teaser makes it very clear that Lena and her team - which includes the likes of Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tuva Novotny, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson and Oscar Isaac - are going to have to fight to survive this mysterious new threat.

Annihilation is an adaptation of Jeff VanderMeer's novel, and is scheduled to hit theaters on Feb. 23, 2018.

Thinking about buying the book. Has anyone read it? I heard it's crazy.

@Benjamitesandwich - I listened to the trilogy on audiobook. It's very good, not great, but very good. The first book, in my opinion, is the weakest. The third I enjoyed the most. The great thing about the books are the visuals. The world and things the characters witness are nothing like I've seen in another book, let alone movie.

The movie looks like it has a lot of touches from the other two books, as the first book was almost like a novel length prologue to the full story.

If you have the time, I'd say it's definitely worth the read, but do the whole trilogy. I'd also recommend the audiobook. The narration is really, really great. Some of the language can get a bit too flowery, but it's all done intentionally and in the interest of the characters. It's also a very immersive story, which, for me, is what I always look for. You get a good sense of what it feels like to be in Area X and the effect it has on people.

@keithv - Interesting, I loved the second one the most. I thought it was the creepiest. I didn't really love the third, though. This trailer looks way too "pretty" for my taste.

@MarkV - I loved the approach to the send book. It was great that it was so different from the first and just the almost comedic reveal of what kind of organization Southern Reach was was really great. It was almost like X Files by way of Office Space. I think my problem was that, toward the end, the author kept piling on the questions and didn't answer any until the third book. All the piling mysteries started to remind me of Lost.

The trailer is very, very pretty, and understand what you mean. I talked about it with my brother and said that it looks like its taking all the weird, cerebral elements of the book and making them visual and literal. The books, with the exception of the end of the third, seemed much more subtle than this trailer. Liker I pictured Area X as looking kind of normal and not so out there

@keithv - I've only read the first so far. If I understand the novel correctly, the trailer is likely showing what they were actually passing through while they each thought they were looking at a normal landscape.
MarkV

@keithv - Right! The fact that everything looks normal (in the books) is kind of what makes it so mysterious. The "threat" if you will is more intangible that way.

It does look good and I'm a fan of the director but there's also something I didn't like about the trailer that I can't pt my finger on.

Is this based on the book? Because the book was kind of a weird take on Stalker.

MarkV - 9/27/2017, 10:05 AM
@MarkV - That Russian film. I've never seen it but the description of the film really matches up with the plot. Kind of a Stalker/Solaris thing.
