The new trailer for Denis Villeneuve's Dune, now officially titled "Dune: Part 1," has been released online, and it's quite something.
The teaser begins with a voiceover from Chani (Zendaya), as she relays the plight of her people, the Fremen, to Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet) in a dream. We then see Baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård) plot the downfall of House Atreides so his family can maintain their brutal grip over the planet of Arrakis and the production of the most precious substance in the universe, the Spice Melange.
The first 10 minutes of Dune screened in IMAX theaters yesterday, and the response from those who've seen it was very positive indeed, with some already hailing Villeneuve's adaptation of Frank Herbert's seminal sci-fi novel as a masterpiece. That might be a little premature after seeing just 10 minutes of a 2 and half hour film, but looking at this trailer, we're willing to believe it.
We found out that the sci-fi adaptation had been pushed back from October 1 to October 22 last month. The movie is still set to debut simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max, and we recently got confirmation that it will have its out-of-competition world premiere on Friday, September 3 at the Toronto International Film Festival.
For those unfamiliar with the source material, Dune follows the Atreides family as they relocate to the desolate planet of Arrakis to assume control of the production of the most valuable resource in the galaxy, the Spice Melange. Unfortunately, an act of treachery soon makes an outcast of The Duke Atreides' youngest son Paul, and he must accept his destiny as a powerful prophet of the Arrakis natives known as The Fremen.
