Deadline reports that Godzilla vs. Kong is still dominating the global box office after adding another $24.1 million from overseas locations this weekend for a total of $288.3 million internationally. Throw in what the crossover event has earned in the U.S., and it's sitting pretty at $357.8 million worldwide.
This puts it on track to surpass what Tenet made last summer, and likely leaves Warner Bros. feeling good about the decision to have Godzilla vs. Kong hit theaters and HBO Max at the same time.
While that was a controversial move, it's driven a huge number of subscribers to WarnerMedia's streaming service, while also generating a healthy haul from the box office you have to believe will at least cover production and marketing costs. With this in mind, it's no wonder Marvel Studios is planning a similar release for Black Widow in theaters and on Disney+'s Premier Access.
There's more good news for Warner Bros. after the weekend, as Mortal Kombat made just shy of $11 million from 17 offshore markets, including Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Taiwan.
Unfortunately, this early release means there are already spoiler clips all over YouTube and social media!
The second half of 2021 looks set to be much busier for blockbusters than the first, but these numbers do show that there's an appetite there for the big screen experience among moviegoers.
