James Cameron announced at the end of the Avatar panel at the San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) that fans would be treated to an opportunity to screen free footage of his latest epic August 21, which he dubbed "Avatar Day."

With "Avatar Day" just a week away, 20th Century Fox has finally announced details about this historic event. Beginning on Monday, August 17, at noon PST, thousands of tickets will be given out on a first-come, first-serve basis for screenings of 16 minutes of Avatar footage at 101 IMAX venues across the United States and Canada. There will be two showings, one at 6:00 PM and another at 6:30 PM, and the footage will include an introduction by Cameron and scenes not previously shown at SDCC.

Cameron has described himself as a "dreamer" and said that he created Avatar for all of the other dreamers out there, introducing the SDCC footage with these words:

"How many of you have ever wanted to go to another planet? Second question: Are you ready to go to Pandora?"

Avatar was written and directed by Cameron and also stars Sam Worthington, Michelle Rodriguez, Zoe Saldana and Giovanni Ribisi.

Avatar opens December 18th!

I haven't....sheep.

This movie is very intriguing and what I wouldn't give to be at one of those screenings.

Curious about the new technology they came up with for capturing the 3D for this movie.

I am starting to get a little annoyed with this.
I just don't understand why they are waiting to anounce when the tickets will be available and for which IMAX theaters.

Cameron is such a ham! He's like the David Brent of film directors. He's great though!

I'd love to go. But, pay regular IMAX price for 16 minutes... Thats crazy. Someone will sneak a video camera in and I can see the footage then.

@Minotauro: It was...incredible. I'm a huge sci-fi fan, but I'm very critical of the genre. Only the very best will do. I haven't been this excited about seeing a sci-fi movie since the first Matrix.

We screened 12 minutes of footage at SDCC. Everyone had 3-D glasses and I was basically front row since I was in the press box.

The footage started with the military briefing about the planet Pandora. It was very reminiscent of Aliens.

Sam Worthington's character is introduced and the concept of an "avatar" is explained by Sigourney Weaver's character. Then, Worthington dives into his avatar and...has trouble adjusting to it at first. The avatar is a human-Navi hybrid with a blank mind. Worthington then mentally "pilots" the hybrid as if it were his own body.

In the jungles of Pandora, Worthington's hybrid avatar encounters crazy plants and monstrous creatures as he learns to use his new body. He then encounters a female Navi and the two don't get along at first.

Then, Worthington's avatar goes on a hunting run with a tribe of the Navi. They try to catch dragons and he's nearly killed when he tries to wrangle a really fierce one.

That's...about all I can recall right now.

How was the CGI?

Um...incredible...outrageous...awesome...revolutionary...need I say more?
