GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS' Rotten Tomatoes Score Has Been Revealed

There's been an awful lot of excitement surrounding Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and now the movie's Rotten Tomatoes score has been revealed amidst mixed reviews. Find out more after the jump...

Godzilla was met with something of a mixed response from fans due to the way director Gareth Evans chose to tease the titular monster's arrival, but critics, for the most part, really enjoyed it.

Unfortunately, the same can't be said for sequel Godzilla: King of the Monsters

With critics branding it "the worst American Godzilla film" and "an overload of repetitive, joyless destruction that mistakes volume and demolition for actual excitement," it probably won't surprise you to learn that it has a pretty dismal Rotten Tomatoes score of 56%.

According to the Critics Consensus, "Godzilla: King of the Monsters delivers spectacular kaiju action -- and reaffirms that cutting-edge effects are still no substitute for a good story."

It's hard to say what impact, if any, this will have on the chances of the movie finding success at the box office but Godzilla Vs. Kong is already shooting, so that's happening regardless of how well-received this movie is. Ultimately, it sounds like the action delivers while the story and human cast does notm but that won't pose much of a problem for moviegoers keen to see these monsters go to war.

Are you still excited to check out Godzilla: King of the Monsters?

@TheOverseer -

my point is;
if all ppl care is 'destruction porn' then this is the movie,
(or transformers for that matter)
they been looking for

I thought we evolve from 'brainless' movies
I guess I was wrong

@Flix
I can not comment on a movie I have not seen....

@Equivocal - I love Aronofsky and Tarantino and appreciate fine artistic films. Sometimes I do like to switch off my brain and just enjoy a big CGI spectacle. How about you let people like what they like. Are you the movie police or something?

i liked the first one, but the soldier and his wife were not that interesting characters.

also, they kinda cheated on monsters action sequences. too short and too dark as i recall. please correct me if i'm wrong.

but the story was actually good

6/10

@jerryblake - I agree with you on Godzilla 2014. The human characters were pretty dull (although Elizabeth Olsen is HOT), but the human characters are always dull in Godzilla flicks. I liked what action we got and was satisfied overall. 7/10 for me.

@jerryblake - The Screenplay definitely needed some rewrites.

The movie should have had an allegory just like Godzilla(1954, about Nuclear Bombs) and Shin Godzilla(About Fukushima Tsunami)

It should have also revolved around Bryan Cranstons character. He could have been like Richard Dreyfus from Close Encounters. Big conspiracy and cover up tries to tell everyone about it. The son is fine. The whole first act is fine but it should have stuck with Cranston and the cover up/conspiracy.

Then introduce Godzilla and Monarch in the second act.

Of course, 3rd act with Godzilla vs military vs Muto.

Sure, the shark in Jaws doesn't show up until the last 10 minutes but the movie was about the Sherrif and his paranoia.

The dinosaurs don't show up in Jurassic Park until 2/3 into the movie but we get to know the characters and all about this Jurassic Park.

The aliens in Close Encounters don't show up until the end of the movie. We get to know Richard Dreyfuss and the fact that he sees these visions of Devils Tower.

In Godzilla(1954), the monster is talked about but doesn't show up until the last 10 minutes. Even after the city is destroyed we see the damage that is caused with children in the hospitals etc.

It's okay to tease but it has to be done right. First create compelling characters. Focus the story on the characters. Get us invested into the characters. You can sprinkle in mentions of Godzilla. Then in the 3rd act have a big pay off.

Do not do cutaways. That just gets the audience angry.

Oh well, that's better than what it started at. Higher chance that I will like it then. Many of the complaints I read are similar to the 2014 film, which I didn't like at all. Hope that's not the case here.

Honestly not surprised. Watching the trailers it looked spectacular but I couldn't get any sort of read on what the story of the movie is. Still want to see it just for the visuals.

This is Man of Steel all over again. Clueless critics will assail the film and a small percentage of the audience will swallow their verdict while most of the general audience will enjoy the film just fine. Then WB will overreact and dramatically alter future monster films following Batman v Super....I mean... Kong vs Godzilla then add pointless slapstick to it instead of being patient, forging ahead and building on the foundation already laid out.
WakandanQueen
WakandanQueen - 5/29/2019, 4:08 AM
@Forthas - Important to note that Man of Steel and Batman v Superman weren't as lucrative as Warner Bros. were hoping, which is part of the reason why they "altered the future films". They couldn't care less about critics. It was the audiences' response that triggered WB.
Forthas
Forthas - 5/29/2019, 4:26 AM
@WakandanQueen - I agree..somewhat...!

The overreaction came after Man of Steel. At that point, they should have built on their existing foundation. Instead studio interference took them in the wrong direction.

If you recall in the Fast and Furious Franchise they went away from what made those films marketable with Tokyo Drift. To the credit of Universal Studios, they did not throw the baby out with the bathwater...but forged ahead, learned from mistakes and went back to what made the franchise good in the first place. Now it is a billion dollar IP and they are splitting it off into other areas now that they have a formula that seems to work.

King of Monsters looks like it is going to be good (could be wrong) but if I start hearing about Kong vs Godzilla (they should change that title) then I know where they are heading and it will be another IP ruined.

DoubleD - 5/29/2019, 4:56 AM
@Forthas - Man of Steel was a flop wiith General Audience. Just the fans liked it and thats why WB / DC didn't give us a sequel. Zack Snyder killed Superman.

BvS SUCKED !!!
Jeight8
Jeight8 - 5/29/2019, 5:07 AM
@Forthas - jl would be a mess humor or not. Snyders cut was disastrous.

Thats a pretty important detail to note.

Also mos entire third act is empty destruction. Hard to argue with critics on that one.
VileBlood
VileBlood - 5/29/2019, 5:18 AM
@Forthas - The only overreaction for MOS came from Snyder fans trying to declare the film a masterpiece when it's just a lame attempt to copy Batman Begins with lots of CGI explosions, lens flare and dull characters.
Forthas
Forthas - 5/29/2019, 5:24 AM
@DoubleD - Man of Steel's audience RT score was...

which is in the same ballpark as Black Panther 79% and Aquaman 76%... you know those other movies that "flopped" with the general audience.

MOS is still the best selling DVD in the US of all of the DCEU films...

https://www.the-numbers.com/alltime-bluray-sales-chart

So I think the audience liked it fine!
Forthas
Forthas - 5/29/2019, 5:36 AM
@Jeight8 - So let me argue with the critics...Wonder Woman, all the Avengers and Black Panther ALL had CGI filled third acts with plenty of destruction...critics did not seem to have a problem with that!
Forthas
Forthas - 5/29/2019, 5:44 AM
@obredaan - Copying Batman Begins was a great approach to Man of Steel if the studio had made that the building block to a shared universe with the Dark Knight Trilogy. That made Man of Steel one of the best CBM's to come out in recent years. Marvel reuses the same formula for MANY of its origin story characters yet no one seems to mind...

A comic book film with CGI explosions...can you name one that does not have that?

Lens flares...not sure what that has to do with the quality of the film...its like saying the movie has an end credit scene....

...and "dull characters" is one thing I did not see in Man of Steel.

Sorry, but whether you go to see a Godzilla movie for the human characters or not, they're a huge part of it so you're getting it whether you like it or not! In this instance, they suck and pretty much ruin the movie. When the monster fights happen they're pretty cool, and then it's back to the laughably bad dialogue and dumb decisions.

@RorMachine - I was looking forward to seeing O'Shea Jackson's parts in the movie. And I was expecting some good dialogue with Charles Dance and Kyle Chandler on board... even tho the plot surrounding Millie Bobbie Brown's character had me worried since the first trailer.
