Ready Player One was released in 2018 to mostly positive reviews and an impressive $609.7 million at the worldwide box office. Based on the 2011 novel of the same name by Ernest Cline, the story is set in a dystopian future where people escape their grim reality by immersing themselves in a virtual reality world called the OASIS.

In the movie, Teenager Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) embarks on a quest within the OASIS to find an Easter egg left by its creator, James Halliday, with its discovery promising wealth and control of the OASIS to the winner.

A sequel to the original novel, Ready Player Two, was published in 2020. Watts was once again the focus and, while it drew mixed reviews from fans of the original, there's been a fair bit of excitement to see it adapted for the big screen like its predecessor.

Well, it's finally happening, albeit with Steven Spielberg producing instead of returning as director. Showbiz 411 (via SFFGazette.com) recently caught up with the filmmaker and, while they don't share any specific quotes, their report reveals:

"Exclusively, the great Steven Spielberg told me that 'Ready Player Two,' the sequel to his huge hit from a couple of years ago, will be coming. Only Spielberg will produce, not direct. He didn't give me a timetable.

"Spielberg, meantime, is exploring his options for new films with a lot of choices including 'The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara,' which has been bantered about for years. He also has a remake of 'Bullitt' with Bradley Cooper that’s been on deck for some time."

There's no word on who will helm this sequel, but they have big shoes to fill when it comes to following in Spielberg's footsteps. Ready Player One isn't considered one of his best movies, of course, so another filmmaker may well be able to improve on what he delivered over half a decade ago.

For what it's worth, back in 2020, Sheridan seemed keen to return to the franchise.

"Recently, like I've had people asking me questions about, you know, a Ready Player Two. You know, 'Is there going to be sequel?' And I think everybody's well aware that Ernie Cline is releasing a Ready Player Two , the novel. You know, but people keep asking me and I would love to have an answer for you and I think people, you know, will and can speculate all they want, but I don't really know what the plan is yet. I have my fingers crossed and, of course, I think it's a great and I loved working on that film, so yeah, I hope, I hope we get to do another."

The climax/ending was a bit of a dud for me, I feel like the IOI and the real world weren't fleshed out well enough, but damn I loved the rest of the movie so you wont hear me complaining about a sequel.

I like this movie so a sequel is very welcome. I remember watching this on imax back 2 back with the pacific rim sequel.

Now who would be a good director? 🤔

We need more color too, the first one's color palette was on the dim side.

@vectorsigma - Edgar Wright would be perfect.

@vectorsigma - It's timely given they're essentially rolling out the prototype now at Apple.

@ObserverIO - im on board on this idea. Make it happen Steven!

Read the sequel book. Wasn't nearly as good as the first but loved the Prince, Janet Jackson and the 7 Sonic Chaos Emeralds references. One of my favourite parts was when they went into the John Hughs planet. H and Wade's debate about Lord of the Rings being only for white people probably gonna turn into a rant rather than a debate in the movie version?

Hunter Shafer gonna play L0hengrin?

@Chaos200 - One of the only things I didn't like about the Prince planet was that he referred to Batman '89 as being a film from 1990 and called the Flugelheim Museum, the Gotham Art Museum. He lost a little geek cred with me there. But I guess he just wasn't into DC as much as I was. We can't all be into everything.

We all have gaps in our geek knowledge.

Still if I were him, I would have run various parts of the book by specialists in those areas.

@ObserverIO - the same goes for the movie. They should've gotten some gamers to comment on the actual game sections.

Especially with the first race. I would go backwards without the hint, as I either would just [frick] around or to see of going out of bounds leads to anywhere.

@Chaos200 - Well if Speilberg directs again I doubt we will see that Lord of the Rings reference. All of his book movies are very different from their source minus a few items.

@bkmeijer1 - Yeah that Key would've been discovered the first day the egg hunt started LMFAO. Especially in a MMO scenario with billions of dollars to be won, are you kidding me?

@Arthorious - If I remember correctly, the beginning of the 3rd act of the RP2 book they go into Tolkien's Silmarillion, which prompted the debate between H and Wade. LOTR is owned by WB which also owns RP1 movie rights, so no way they'll pass that opportunity up lol But yeah' they'll probably skip it since woke unlikable crap like saying "lord of the rings is only for white people" probably wont fly anymore as the virtue signalling stuff in movies is notably starting to get unpopular. I could definitely see a 1 liner joke though rather than H's angry rant from the book that even Wade had to defend it. Ernest Cline strikes me as almost a white guilt type of dude so I dunno what he was going for by having his protagonist argue that Lord of the Rings is for everyone, but I can't remember if Wade conceded that debate to H or not.

Love the first book. Even though they were limited, film is good fun. Not sure how they would do the second book. I wouldn't say no to Edgar Wright directing.

@vectorsigma - I think it's right up his alley. Not sure if they could pull of the Hughes part in the book.

@S8R8M - He could change it to something else. They changed the Monty Python thing to The Shining in the first movie.

@S8R8M - In terms of rights I'm not sure but with deepfake Ai tech being what it is today, seeing Wade interact with the 16 Candles, Breakfast Club and the Ferris Bueller cast would be a incredible. RP2's story might suck but the potential visuals could be a lot of fun.

I loved Player One and would like more. Speilberg not directing is a huge concern for me though. He's a producer to a ton of crap movies and shows. I'm still very excited though

I was about halfway through the second book when I said to myself, “They are definitely not doing a direct adaptation of this.”

Spielberg is the Jim Carrey of filmmakers. When he's not involved with the sequel, it's gonna be bad.

I haven’t read Ready Player Two but I know that it drew controversy at the time it came out so interested to see how they adapt it if the movie is ever made…

Anyway , I didn’t care much for the first one tbh so I hope this would be an improvement!!.

I would love to see Robert Zemeckis direct the sequel.

I’m wondering if they will change anything from the book to the screen.

For once, I hope they change as much as possible from the book. It may had some neat ideas (some of them taken or inspired by Westworld or Tron Legacy), but I despised that one in comparison with the first. The protagonist was even more unlikeable, many interesting things happened off camera, and don't get me started on the 70+ pages about Prince...

Knowing the Spielberg isn't so far away from the movie's production helps me still be interested in the sequel.
