BOX OFFICE: STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Now Projected For $100M+ Opening Weekend

We previously heard early predictions for Star Trek Into Darkness suggest an $85-90M opening weekend, but now the J.J. Abrams-directed sequel is said to be targeting an impressive $100M gross thanks to its extended debut weekend.

A while back, we heard the first box office predictions for Star Trek Into Darkness' opening weekend. The J.J. Abrams-directed sci-fi sequel was originally said to be aiming for an $85-90M; despite the high anticipation, this number isn't massively higher than the 2009 film's $70M opening weekend. Still, it would mark the highest opening weekend in the entire Star Trek series, and now we have more promising tracking. Via The Wrap, Into Darkness is now on track to earn over $100M thanks to its opening weekend. The movie will screen in 336 IMAX 3D theaters starting tomorrow, and Paramount recently moved its release date to May 16th (this Thursday). And as expected, it should easily defeat Marvel's Iron Man 3, which is entering its third weekend. Do you plan on seeing Star Trek Into Darkness this week?

Not sure if I'm gonna' see this in theaters or not yet. The trailers just haven't had that "wow" effect on me, for lack of a better word. I really enjoyed the first one though, so that's the only reason I MIGHT see this...MIGHT.

@AsianVersionOfET the trailers dont do the movie justice, it's a really good and fast paced movie, better than the first one imo, best movie i've watched in the cinema this year

@BreaktheSpell Are you crazy, sure it looks great, it has huge anticipation but higher than the avengers? Considering the last movie that Supes was in was that godawful returns. So it's probably gonna do 145-150.

Great film unlike IM3, plenty of action, great script and no annoyingly shitty twists.

Insane performance!

Won't say anything about film other than the ACTION... It's truly relentless!
Once they're out of the Earth, chasing "John Harrison" ... It's just ACTION, FIGHTS & FLYING through SPACE!! Can't get better!

Gona see it a few more times!
It's truly a remarkable achievement; how the hell they even make stuff like this!
Crazy stuff man!
Really happy NOW that JJ is handling STAR WARS!

People are going to be disappointed with Benedict Chumberbatch's role in this. Movie was great, but his character was very generic. Kirk & Spock are the highlight of this movie.

Didn't I make a bet with someone who said that Star Trek wouldn't make over 250 in the states and that Iron Man 3 would continue to dominate the BO until June?

Someone owes me some apologies.
