J.J. Abrams Is Thinking Shatner For Star Trek 2

The director is thinking about bringing a couple of old school Trekkies back in a new school way.

With all the Star Trek sequel talk going on these days, J.J. Abrams is toying with the idea of bringing back some old school favorites:

"The fun of this [alternate Star Trek reality] is that the destiny of these characters is in their hands — it's not constrained by the pre-existing films or TV series," states Abrams. "Believe me, whether it's William Shatner or Khan ... it would be ridiculous to not be open to those ideas."

He's right, bringing back Shatner would bring out the old school trekky fans and spark interest. We probably will not see them do the same things they have done in past films, but who wants to see what we have already seen before. We need to explore new possibilities and new scenarios for these classic characters to endure.

"Khan and Kirk exist, and while their history may not be exactly as people are familiar with, I would argue that a person's character is what it is," states Abrams, explaining that new-Khan could hate Kirk as much as old-Khan despite dissimilar back stories. "Certain people are destined to cross paths and come together, and Khan is out there ... even if he doesn't have the same issues."

There were Tribbles in the new movie! When Spock and Kirk find Scotty on the outpost, listen to the background noise, you hear the tribbling. Scotty tells his story on how he got stuck out there and when he stands up you see a "birdcage" on his table and in the cage...Tribbles!

Now bringing Shatner back. I don't know about that the man is dead After Generations. How would they pull that off. I am not really up for that. Unless they bring him back During his time in the NeXXus before he meet Picard. To keep the alternate time lines in order I believe he would have to take him back to the NeXXus towards the end of the Movie.

@ spockali, U have my avatar & my last Name, Puzzling & interesting.

Also forget the mentioning of Khan. Khan is an Augment created by Dr. Arik Soong Great Grandfather of Noonien Soong creator of DATA in the regular timeline.

I don't agree with bringing them back. Just continue to move forward.

He said Shatner, not Shatner as old Kirk. Just because Nimoy reprised his role as a geriatric Spock doesn't mean that Shatner's potential role would be an alternate James T. Kirk. Who knows Shatner could play another role entirely, make just a cameo, or be Tiberious Kirk, the grandfather.

Khan could have his own flick, since Hollywood is so prequel crazy it would be cool to see the events that led up to Khan's banishment into space. What made Khan so badass, would be a hell of a follow-up, and end the film with the Enterprise coming up on the ship that Khan is exiled on.

With all the re-boots and retread stories that Hollywood pushes out, it would be a fresh take on the sequel/prequel method to think outside the box, and create a perfect set up for a re-imagining of "Space Seed" for Star Trek 3.

Even shoot them at the same time so it can come out into the theaters in rapid succession.

Try as I may, I can't understand the enthusiasm for Abrams' Trek. The plot had huge holes in it. There were way too many instances of "THAT was convenient!", where people or things just happened to be right there waiting to be found and/or used at different times, the camera work was atrocious (must EVERY scene be a closeup?). The fight scenes were way too close-up, with fists and things flying around with no backing up to show us who is fighting, and where they are in relation to each other. That seems to be the trend in how fight scenes are shot now, and I can't stand that crap. A close-up of a particularly good hit, or a finishing shot is fine, but otherwise, back the camera up some so we can see what's going on. I had other complaints with it, but I think previous reviewers have pretty well brought those up, and probably better than I could.

I know most people seem to love this film for some reason, but sorry! I just don't see the appeal. I just today joined http://nojarjar.ning.com , THE leading Trek board on the Net for Trek fans who dislike this movie, and encourage any of you other dissenters out there to join, too.

ON a related note, and sorry for being so damn long, some of those Kirk/Spock things posted in this thread were pretty funny. Thanks for sharing!

Actually, one of the darkest moments of the film was seeing how much Leonard Nimoy has aged. I suppose I expected to see him in that red uniform looking exactly like he did when he last played Spock in the movies. Let's face it, that was almost eons ago. Instead, what we got was a very old man with wrinkled skin, sunken eyes and denture inhibited speech. I have to admit he hasn't aged as well as William Shatner, who now looks like Ryan O'Neal's plumped-face twin brother.

Shatner in the next movie? What is he 79 now? You figure that by the time they start work on the next film he'll be 80 or 81. 81 or 82 upon that film's release. Remember James Cagney in "Ragtime" at 85? If Shatner maintains his good health, his energy and charm should carry him through any new Star Trek film, in a token cameo role. But, JJ better get going soon, as time is growing rather short and precious for these aging actors. In fact, it's very doubtful will ever see Nimoy in pointed ears again - though I have been proven wrong before and so has he!

When you add a Nimoy or Shatner to a new Star Trek film you are mostly paying homage to these seminal ST character actors, by fast forwarding their characters and themselves into yet another - excuse the expression - "next generation" of the ST film series. This will lengthen their Star Trek shelf life and make them relevent to younger movie goers for years and years as they watch these films in the theatres and continue to enjoy them on Blu-Ray discs and whatver electronic media comes next. May they Live Long and Prosper.

Shatner could play a host who sells exotic low fare trips that he negotiates with the help of cyborgs, or they could just have him play his part in a glass jar, Futurama style. heh heh heh.

IF SHATNER RETURNS CAN YOU MAYBE HAVE HIM SLIM DOWN A BIT, I WANNA SEE A DISTINGUISHED OLDER BUT IN SHAPE CAPTAIN KIRK..I KNOW IT MIGHT BE ASKING MUCH BUT I ALWAYS ENVISION CAPTAIN KIRK AGING WELL, THE GUY IS A WARRIOR, A GREAT CAPTAIN..HE'S A BIT BLOATED NOWADAYS.

I vote for the 1st fifteen minutes of Trek2 to be the last bit of the Doomsday Machine where Kirk's "shotgun" captaincy is called into question because the Captain of the Constitution had to sacrifice himself to save the day just like Kirk's dad.

And they can riff with that ageing disease in the original series where Shatner had to wear makeup. Instead have Chris Pine age into Shatner and give him his 15 minutes to save the day.

SirPrize, you are WRONG, Winona Rider, Was Spock's mother.
Joshw24 was correct, Kirk's mom is Jennifer Morrison, which plays Cameron on House. Star wars fans should shut their sabers on star trek sites. that would be logical.

Live long and prosper.

It would be cool to see the new crew go into the future to confront the future Khan, and to meet the old Kirk. However, time travel gets kind of old after a while.

I say no more time travel. Just reinvent the old "Space Seed" story for this generation.
