William Shatner Likely Not To Be In Star Trek Sequel

The man that is still the only Captain Kirk in our hearts was recently questioned about having a role in the sequel to the 2009 movie reboot of Star Trek, the show that made him not just famous but immortal in the hearts of fans, Sadly his answer shows that it is not likely.

When the decision was made to reboot the cult Sci-fi show Star Trek was announced, it was very much an idea that split fan boys down the middle. But when 2009 swung around, with fan favorite director JJ Abrams behind the camera, some people (but nowhere close to all) opinions were changed about the reboot.

During the Filming of Star Trek, Abrams intended to put the original Captain James Tiberius Kirk, William Shatner in a brief cameo as his future self. Shatner was not satisfied with such a brief cameo, he walked.

Now with the news that its sequel is green lit without a glance at the script from the studio, Shatner was once again questioned by THE HERALD SUN about possibly having a role in Star Trek 2, and it doesn't seem likely

“I would be so interested in doing it, especially with that wonderful director JJ Abrams, but I don’t see how it’s possible and maybe we all have gone beyond that,” he says.

“But I have shot a wonderful documentary where I talk to all the captains of Star Trek and try to find a common denominator and in the meantime have some fun talking to them about them and their lives.”

@bleedthefreak: I beg to differ. I was at DragonCon in Atlanta and during the panel where he and Leonard were speaking, he told everyone there that he wasn't even offered a part. Ranted for like thirty minutes about why Leonard was offered a spot and he wasn't and finally Leonard told him it was because he was a dickhead....lol Cracked the whole place up! So, I personally don't think he was ever approached.

Well, he isn't the only Kirk. It's time to accept that he's not and move on.

Articles like this are just annoying.

The only Captain Kirk, he HAS to be in Star Trek 2. Also what is this documentary he's talking about?

If I were the director I'd make sure Shatner was a background extra in every single scene. Like Alfred Hitchcock, but in every single scene!

@bleed: I'm just sayin' what I saw...could have been a skit for all I know. You can pull it up on youtube. It was a funny as hell panel. It was Dragon con 2009, just type in Shatner and Nimoy at Dragon Con if you want a good laugh. I think it all started with George Takei being gay and Shatner having a problem with it, then back pedaling and it just spiraled downhill from there......

My only issue with Shatner is he keeps on whining about not being asked to appear in the first film. He keeps trying to get into the new films. I remember back in 2009 he even had a huge spat with J.J Abrams over it...and now he's suddenly calling Abrams a "wonderful" director...sounds like butt-kissing to me. Nimoy appearing in the first film was ok...he isn't as pathetic and as starving for attention as Shatner.

Look I loved TOS, I love it a lot back in the day. But c'mon this is a NEW Trek Universe. It is time Shatner took a backseat and finally- STFU for a change.

Just my opinion. Oh and...I've said it before and i'll say it again...

TALOSIANS FOR TREK2!!!!! FTW!!!

BULLSHIT, Bill has said on multiple occasions he likes Abrams, and he even had him at his fund raising banquet as a special guest in 2009

There is no room for hating on the Shat in my universe. Personally, I'm NOT a big fan of the Abrams reboot. Popcorn movie at best. Abrams and his writers took a huge crap all over Trek canon and everyone seems to be okay with it. It's the end of western civilization, I tell you.

@Deadshot- Shatner complained about not being in the first film back in 0'8 sorry wrong year in my earlier comment.

http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/b64207_jj_abrams_vs_william_shatner_round.html

Follow that link, says that Abrams had to clarify to the public WHY he left out Shatner from the film and then Shatner rebuffed that he was never approached for a part in the film. They had disagreements = spat.

http://gawker.com/#!5063352/jj-abrams-on-william-shatner-how-did-this-become-my-life

At this link Abrams disputed Shatner's complaint. They had misunderstandings and had their little back-and-forths with each other. I would consider those to be- spats because never have i seen a veteran actor in the caliber of SHATNER complaining over and over about not getting catered to with these new films.

@Knightstalker- True in a way...they destroyed Planet Vulcan...wiped out TOS universe completely and Spock and Uhura are gettin it on probably doggy-style. Yes there were definite liberties.

But...I don't know. It is nice to see a totally new take for a change.

Obviously since Abrams kept getting dogged in interviews about Shatner...and since they kept having their back-and-forths about what really happened and what didn't really happen...that tells me- Shatner made a big deal about not being in the film.

I keep thinking, no matter how many sequels they make to 'Trek' Shatner will keep on making public complaints about not being in the film. He can go right ahead but this is a totally new Trek universe and Shatner needs to understand. Bill had his day in the sun- his own complete series, cameos in TNG, Star Trek the Motion Picture (very boring) and Wrath of Khan (very un-boring and cool)

He nearly had a cameo in 'Star Trek Enterprises' and nearly had a cameo in the 2009 film.

It is Pine's turn to be Kirk. He did great in the first film (changed the origin of the original Kirk a bit I know) but the film overall was very entertaining and was just the kind of re-launch Trek seriously needed. It even got those die-hard 'Star Wars' fans to eat their own words.

"Abrams and his writers took a huge crap all over Trek canon and everyone seems to be okay with it. It's the end of western civilization, I tell you."

Lol awesome post and I agree, I find it weird more trek fans don't hate it. I think its because the real spock approves of it, so they do.

And yeah the new film isn't Star Trek. I realized that before the film even started, when I was sitting in the theater during the previews for other films, and saw a really hot girl with a black guy that had 10 gold chains dangling from his neck, walk in and sit down to watch it.

@intruder WTF are you trying to say? you're telling him to get off his "lazy ass" to do a CAMEO with Nimoy and then you say to stop doing the commercials that giving him work? are you confused by your own words or just an ignorant rambler?

@Fuel in other words, he can't make a cameo because he got older? are you retarded?

LP4 - 3/3/2011, 9:26 PM
@Deadshot- Ok I'm sorry I got upset and gave Shatner so much crap. He DID originate the role I admit. Look I enjoyed the Original Series back in the day. I enjoyed Wrath of Khan and I loved seeing him when he brought to life the legendary team-up with Picard.

I just wanna see...MORE of what Pine can do with the role. Like I mentioned in my earlier comments there were many changes made in order to separate the new film universe from TOS universe. But ok...I was pretty harsh on the guy. Sorry for that -_-

LP4 - 3/3/2011, 9:29 PM
@Deadshot and Knightstalker- One thing that sounded nice was the writers for the Star Trek sequel said they intended to make the film connect more with TOS. Which I still don't see how it's possible unless they bring back Planet Vulcan somehow...I don't want the film to be about revamping the universe they destroyed in the first film. It'd be too...confusing. I don't know...
