The Cloverfield Paradox introduced a lot of weird concepts, including alternate dimensions, time-travel, and arms that walk around the place by themselves. However, what wasn't particularly clear was how this movie ties into the previous two and fans were left to fill the gaps by assuming that the monsters in Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane were just different realities infected by the Cloverfield Paradox.
In a new interview, producer J.J. Abrams and director Julius Onah confirmed that the monster at the end of The Cloverfield Paradox is, in fact, the same as the one featured in the first movie. That's an interesting reveal but their explanation for the latest instalment's ending is super confusing.
"Now that we’ve had these multiple timelines have been opened and things are happening dimensionally, there’s many different ways for these things to play out," Onah said in regards to where things go next for Cloverfield. "So there was a real fine connection to make with things dropping into the ocean that you see in the movie when they first realize they’ve landed in this other dimension. There’s still more possibilities that will come with more strands of the story."
Abrams also commented on the potential alternate dimensions have for the franchise, adding: "On the one hand you can say ‘well then anything anywhere could be a Cloverfield movie,’ but the intention has never been to take a movie and then slap Cloverfield on it. The idea was to say Cloverfield is a kind of umbrella, you know, under which all of sorts of genres and thrill rides can take place."
