Great news.Williams deserves to finish out his wonderful career on the series that along with Jaws and Superman put him on the map as a legendary composer.

When they talk about the soundtrack of you're life they were talking about John Williams.

Hard to imagine that the film I first saw in the summer of 1977 is coming up on forty years. Think about that. That would be like releasing a sequel to Fritz Lang's 1920's film METROPOLIS in 1977 with the original actors and composer returning.

You must be thinking of STAR TREK. Old heads like myself are going to weep at new STAR WARS films with the original cast, John Williams score and no more clone war shit.

Also, why would other people reaction make YOU go "meh"? lol That's weird.

I don't particularly care for John Williams scores, sure they're iconic and all that shit but they aren't my cup of tea, and yea SW fanboys are worse than the ST ones, these films are gonna be terrible to those idiots no matter how good they are.

I've loved most of Williams work but his work the past 20 years has really declined.
He did music for the Potter films that was so bad it was distracting. And his Attack of The Clones work was identical at times to his Potter work.

He created great themes for Jaws, Raiders, Superman, Star Wars, E.T. and Jurassic Park. But he didnt create one memorable theme for any character in the prequels. In most cases he didnt even attempt to.
And the replaying of old themes didnt have the power they once did.

They'll choose who they want and choosing Williams was not the best of moves at this point.

@ekrolo2

The original fans hated the special-editions and prequel butchering. It was a new generation of fans that accepted all the clone war shit and butchering. As an a original fan, I'm telling you; original cast members, original composer, films set after Return of the Jedi and no Lucas to [frick] it up. The fanboys are going to love the new STAR WARS. And if you don't care for Williams scores that it's safe to say you're not much of a STAR WARS fan to begin with being that it's music is a large part of it's popularity and success. So, take it from someone who knows.

Seeing as I constantly read and pick up new EU stuff like the novels and comics and I watch the shows and stuff yea im a fairly big Star Wars fan but John Williams scores aren't my thing, its not that they're bad its just a taste thing where they don't click with me. Oh and all of the things you listed just made me realize this is probably going to be Star Wars Returns where the whole film is a big homage to the old movies and nothing else, I hate that all of the old people are coming back instead of picking new characters, new creative people to make it and move on from the old movies.
WarnerBrother

@ekrolo2

I think fans of the original series will give these new films a lot better reception then the prequels because the original lead actors will be involved and the whole series is coming up on 40 years.

I saw STAR WARS (wasn't called a New hope until it was rereleased in the summer of 79) when I was 9 years old.

When the prequels started I was 31.

When this new series starts,I 'll be closing in on 50.

When you get that old, you start to really confront mortality,parents die,our own children grow up, and you really take stock in the things that really changed your life.

Getting to take another romp through the Star Wars universe with old friends will unleash a wave of nostalgia the likes of which you won't believe and the media will be full of stories from first generation fans in their 40's and 50's talking about being a kid at the movies back in 77.

Nostalgia can only take you so far, Superman Returns completely centered itself on the nostalgia factor for the Donner movies and it failed badly and thats the vibe im getting from this movie.

@ekrolo2

I think you're mistaken.While the return of original cast members is all the talk now regarding this film,it will succeed or fail based on the next generation of actors who will occupy the lead roles.

As far as the old timers go,it will only be a big homage if their presence serves no purpose other then cameo's. Its not out of the question to have Luke return as the Ben/Yoda figure for a new lead hero that's the child of Han and Leia.

Its not out of the question that being the child of a former General in Han case and former Senator and Chancellor in Leia's case, would require them to return to establish the galactic political situation.

This series will belong to a new generation of heroes and villains.

What ever helps you sleep at night friend, this whole movie just screams Superman Returns to me and it seems like a pretty obvious cash grab, like the second they got the property they announce like a new trilogy and spin off movies in between essentially making it a yearly series and milking it until the cow drops dead. Im also not a fan of the expanded universe being butchered by the new movies.

WarnerBrother - 7/27/2013, 3:34 AM
@ekrolo2

You're example of Superman Returns may be a little off.

Not only did Singer center that film on nostalgia for the Donner film,he basically remade the 1978 film beat for beat with improved effects and a bastard kid being
the only notable difference.

I haven't seen anything to suggest that the new trilogy will not take the story forward.
Luke,Han and Leia will not be the center of the story.

Not even he can save this franchise, it was killed ages ago by those ridiculous prequels which also had great John Williams music.

Nothing in these new movies is gonna erase..

1) Jar Jar Binks.
2) The nonsensical rule of two Sith Lords.
3) The blatant stupidity and lack of common sense from the Jedi.
4) The inexplicable dress code of the Jedi being the same as common folk and farmers on Tattooine yet people never confuse the two.
5) The inexplicable reason why somersaulting over your opponent in a lightsaber duel has a 50/50 chance depending on how dumb your opponent decides to be at the moment in time, i.e
a) Kenobi somersaults over Mauls head, Maul blocks it without looking and tackles both Kenobi and Qui Gon with ease.
b) Maul with lightsaber already drawn, watches Kenobi somersault over his head, summon Qui Gons saber, turn it on, turns around to see him land and still doesn't manage to block in time while actually facing his opponent this time.
c) Anakin somersaults over Kenobi's head and Kenobi just cuts off all his arms and legs in mid air.
4) How a slave child can make a robot from scrap that has better build quality, speech and logic than robots designed and made to carry firearms and do battle.
5) Why an entire race would elect a child to rule them.
6) Why two races would elect Jar Jar to represent them in interplanetary politics.
7) why the Jedi who were supposed to treasure life, deem it ok to breed human clones for the sole purpose of fighting and dying.
8) Why Mace Windu has a purple lightsaber.
9) The nonsensical contradiction of Padme deciding to die despite having twins supposedly because Anakin has turned bad, yet telling Obi Wan to not give up on Anakin because she feels there's still good in him.
10) Why the person who created General Grevious decided giving him human lungs would be a smart idea.
11) Where General Grevious was during Attack of the Clones.
12) Where Count Doku was during The Phantom Menace.
13) Where Mon Mothma was during A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back and the end celebrations of Return of the Jedi.
14) Why Mon Mothma exists at all.
15) Why Jango needed to hire another bounty hunter (Zam Wessel) to kill Padme.
16) Why Zam Wessel needed to send a droid to kill Padme instead of using her next to perfect aim with her rifle through the very easy to break glass window.
17) Why the droid need to send two insects to kill Padme instead of just blowing up or spraying poison gas in the hole made in the very easy to smash glass window.
18) Why Jar Jar suggestion people vote to give the Palpatine powers actually happens without anyone actually voting.
19) Why the Council will dispatch two Jedi to settle a trade dispute then not trust the validity of their report when they return by the skin of teeth despite a ship full of witnesses and the ruler of the planet?
20) Why Yoda stops fighting Palpatine just because he falls and loses his lucky coat.

oh and there's more, so much more!

Back at you.So what if its a cash grab,they spent a couple of billion dollars on it what else should they do? Thats like crying over Disney's use of Marvel Studios.If people keep paying for their product,Disney is gonna put more on the market. Simple capitalism my man.

Sorry Disney is butchering the EU, but thats the breaks.The General public doesn't give a crap about the EU.They are the audience Disney is after.

I love John Williams. I really do. But ever since the announcement for Episode VII I'm getting the sense that this movie/trilogy is going to be another "Superman Returns" instead of a "Man of Steel". This could possibly be the reason for the recent rumors of JJ Abrams wanting out. That and the fact that he really doesn't want to shoot in the UK. The movie hasn't even started filming yet and already it seems that a lot of the decision making is out of his hands. And that spells disaster for a movie (Green Lantern anybody?)

While I love EVERYTHING about the original trilogy, I want (no I need) the franchise to actively move forward. Not rehash the past. That's why I own the Blu-rays of the original trilogy. I'm in no way arguing JW Greatness or Awesomeness, but I personally wanted to see a whole new generation of talent tackle this trilogy. From the director to the writers to the actors/actresses all the way down to the composer.

There are a lot of other great composers out there that would do just as good of a job as JW. If the argument is "He should finish out his career on SW b/c he started it" well then that's a bunch a BS. I thought the idea was to get the best for the movie you're trying to make. People are always crying for something fresh and new but then when they get it, they cry and whine b/c it wasn't like they remembered. The proof of that statement can be seen in the fanboy backlash @ MoS and more recently @ Marvel for not using the Hank Pym Ultron origin story in Avengers 2.

As a HUGE Star Wars fan, I'm going to watch them and love them simply because it's Star Wars, but as of right now (based on what I've heard so far) I'm feeling like I will probably like the individual films better than Episodes VII - IX simply because it's trying way to hard and too much to adhere to the original trilogy instead of being it's own thing. Really hoping someone makes a KOTOR movie or a Darth Bane movie.

Financially it makes perfect sense to release like one of these a year, every year but as a movie goer seeing a Star Wars movie every single year is just gonna make me sick of seeing of seeing anything Star Wars related on the big screen. Like if they released them every two years that would be fine but having like spin offs in between them is just over kill.

Yeah, I don't think the old cast is there to be the main characters. They're there because it's a sequel to a trilogy they've been in and are a major part of the story. New characters will added, obviously.

@ekrolo2

Yeah I really don't like how the EU gets hated on either. Most people don't realize that it's the EU that has kept Star Wars Alive. That's a fact. Without Timothy Zahn's trilogy and EVERY book/comic Book that came after that I submit that the Prequels never would have gotten made.

Now all of a sudden with Star Wars love at an all time high, people want to act like the EU doesn't matter or that it has no bearing on Star Wars continued success. And they are completely wrong. Droves of fans aren't cos-playing as Luke, Han or Leia at these conventions. They're dressing up as EU characters mostly.

There's a SERIOUS disconnect between Lucasfilm and the fans; which is one of the reasons Star Wars stayed prevalent to me even without theatrical movies to go see.

So I'm with you in that SO FAR, what I see is another "Superman Returns" happening. I hope and pray it ain't so, but........

@askanison40 Frankly I'd prefer it to be another Superman Returns rather than a Man Of Steel. Not that Superman Returns was a great film or anything, but at least it featured a character that somewhat resembled Superman (aside from the whole stalking thing). Episode VII should be a Star Wars movie. A fun adventure in space. It doesn't need to be re-invented. It doesn't need to change everything that makes Star Wars what it is the way Man Of Steel tried to re-invent Superman by not letting the character actually be Superman.
