George Lucas Take Note: STAR WARS EPISODE II Reimagined So It Didn't Suck

Last year, Belated Media, produced "What If Star Wars Episode I Was Good," a video that proposed hypothetical improvements so that "Phantom Menace" would be watchable. That video went viral, garnering over a million hits. Now, they tackle, "Attack of the Clones."

Actually, now that Star Wars is owned by Disney and not George Lucas, I should make the headline, "J.J. Abrams Take Note," but it's sexier as is. So, in February of 2012, Belated Media, posted a video on their YouTube channel, which you can view by clicking here, that created quite a buzz on the internet. As it tackled the many issues that bogged down the most disappointing film ever created, "Star Wars Episode I - The Phantom Menace." Of course, when you have a huge viral hit like they did, there has to be a sequel. Below, you can see their latest video, which altered the original story quite a bit.

For me, the alteration that I like the best, is having Episode II focus more on the friendship between Anakin and Obi-Wan. And not with exposition, this is something that needs to be shown to us, not told to us. It's one of the biggest flaws in the prequels. Alec Guinness' Obi-Wan Kenobi told us in the original film that he and Anakin were friends, but in the prequels we never see them as anything more than an irritated mentor and a whiny teenager begrudgingly in the company of each other.

ELEMENTS SCRAPED:
- Dex's Diner
- Kamino
- "Love scenes" between Anakin & Padme founded only on Anakin being persistent
- Returning to Tatooine
- Jango Fett (maybe mentioned to build out the world allowing for more impact when Boba is revealed in Empire)
- Basically all politics
- the Colosseum battle

ELEMENTS KEPT:
- Padme's life in danger
- Separatists
- The Clone Army
- A tracker leading to Geonosis
- Palpatine gaining more control
- Anakin meeting Owen
- Anakin losing an apendage
- Count Dooku as leader and "Fallen" Jedi
- Dooku telling Obi-Wan there is a Sith in the Senate
- Acklay
- Clone Troopers arrinving in the nick of time
- Yoda sensing darkness

ELEMENTS ADDED OR EMBELLISHED OR ALTERED:
- Naboo is now Alderaan (forgotten detail intended for Episode I)
- Anakin & Obi-Wan spend far more time together
- Owen's role increased
- Bail Organa's presence increased and relationship to Padme altered
- Maul is alive
- Dooku's redemption (isn't a Sith)

Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones was directed by George Lucas. The screenplay was written by George Lucas and Jonathan Hales. The cast included: Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Hayden Christensen, Ian McDiarmid, Samuel L. JacksonChristopher Lee, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker and Frank Oz. With a budget of $115 million, the film pulled in $650 at the worldwide box office.

Beatin' a dead horse...

None of that even matters. You've got Ewan McGregor, a great actor... saying some truly AWFUL lines... well ok, everyone really. You gotta rewrite the entire script.

I actually love the Prequels. I like the Originals a lot better, but I thoroughly enjoy the Prequels.

Honestly (and feel free to disagree), Dooku was one of the most well-written and fleshed out characters in Attack of the Clones (Revenge, and the two clone wars shows ruined him).

He didn't have that traditional fall from grace into a sith. He saw where the Jedi where going and the role they were having in the Republic, and he said "This is not what the jedi stand for. I do not agree with what's happening."

Before it was revealed he was a Sith, he was a political idealist, much like Qui-Gon

Attack of the Clones = Underrated. I'm serious. The movie has its flaws but it's still enjoyable.

MCOtt, I agree completely. It was also hinted elsewhere (In a novel if I remember right)that Qui-Gon was headed down that path as well. Or it might have just ben a random fanboy fantasy of mine. In fact, if he stayed alive trained Anakin and Obi-Wan, and turned after the impact of the inevitable final fight between the two would have hit harder.

I hate these fans thinking they could do it better USING HINDSIGHT.

Well, of [frick]ing course. While some films are just bad all the way through, many look great until the finished product.

I'm sure we could've prevented the Titanic from sinking using the knowledge we have now.

The prequels were made a decade ago. The dude in the video ain't worth a damn. You have to juggle budget, pacing, effects, etc.

It's Christopher Lee. Name one bad performance. The guy's ancient, but he'll be damned if he phones it in.

I wish they had kept the line from Revenge of the Sith, right before Anakin decapitates him.
"You promised me amnesty!"

In AotC, you can tell Dooku feels some remorse, but he also stands on ceremony. He's putting on all these acts, trying to juggle the many facades, that you really just don't get where he really stands. The trouble there is the private scene with Obi-Wan should have been more revealing, had George written it better. Instead he tries to homage his OWN work, trying to mimic Vader's "join me, and we can end this destructive conflict and bring order to the galaxy." And Obi-Wan even gives the EXACT same response. Obi-Wan should have been like an estranged family member to him.

Could have been good if Lucas knew how to write romance between the Anakin and Padme. The set up was fine, just the use of too much cgi made the film sterile, bland and boring.

As much as I don't like him sometimes, Max Landis is an example of a person whose complaints I can understand. Why? Because he actually wrote a GOOD film. When he attacks Man of Steel or whatever, he comes off as pretentious but it doesn't piss me off as much as stuff like this.

What are this guys credentials? Like I said, does anything really stand out as bad ON PAPER with the prequels? No. Bad dialogue is not inherently noticeable on paper.

For once all of you are right. We gotta stop insisting we could do better, when there's no foundation to those assumptions.

Get rid of Kamino, Jango Fett, and the romance? Points that are necessary to flesh out the story and are needed for the next films? Brilliant.

We play What-if just cause. We all know there's no changing the past, but it's like watching sports highlights and saying "if he had just zigged and not zagged that could have been a touchdown." I always find these kinds of things interesting.

Personally I always thought Dooku should have been exactly what he claimed. Would have made things flow a bit better. And I still think Episode II should have ended with a cliff hanger. You KNEW you were making Episode III so why not? Episode II should have ended with Palpatine looking at Anakin and saying "I'm the Emperor, bitch." Roll credits.

Honestly, Ewan McGregor is what makes me love the prequels.

Everything is flawed, but the dedication that man has and how much he nails the role continues to impress me.

His emotion during the ROTS scene "YOU WERE MY BROTHER ANAKIN!" hits me harder than anything I've ever seen.

But Episode II didn't suck...OK, the romance part wasn't up to much and the droid factory sequence was way over the top but it was a pretty decent movie for the most part.

@Nomis

Of course his idea was similar to Empire. Lucas himself wanted his movies to "rhyme" that's why each prequel were similar to it's counterpart from the original. Lucas wanted the movies to parallel eachother. Of course you'd know this interesting piece of information if you'd stop being a Lucas fanboy and watch the well put together RLM review.

My comments on his Ep. 2 take: Maul lives on is cool. The Dooku thing works too. Owen in the plot is a nice touch. But Anakin lacking confidence and skills, does not work. He needs to be a bad ass. He needs to steal the show from Obi-Wan, he needs to steal the affection of Padme away from Obi-Wan... & yet in the end, it is Anakin that is bitter and jealous of Obi-Wan in Ep. III. I think belated's version of Episode II is a bit plot and dialogue heavy, needs some more "Star Wars Porn" in the way of action, Bounty Hunters, etc.

My comments on his Ep. I take:

I don't know what happened but my first Ep. 1 comment posted too soon. Pre-mature nerdgasm, I suppose. Continuing my thoughts about teenage, grease monkey, rebel without a cause, angry Anakin: the romance absolutely has to happen between Anakin & Padme. Obi-Wan can be jealous and it can plant the seeds for a love triangle that pays off in Ep. III. All the ladies in the audience can swoon because Padnme chooses the bad boy with the fast pod racer instead of the good boy scout, Obi-Wan.

Agree that Maul has to live & JarJar must be deleted!

This is a whole other movie.
