ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY Director Gareth Edwards On Why He Hasn't Seen Disney+'s ANDOR Series Yet

Andor has received widespread critical acclaim, but Rogue One: A Star Wars Story director Gareth Edwards (The Creator) reveals he has yet to watch the Disney+ series...and why that is! Read on for details.

Lucasfilm's first spin-off movie set adjacent to the Skywalker Saga was 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The movie was met with positive reviews and a $1+ billion box office haul.

There were many scenes included in the trailers which weren't in the theatrical cut, though we'd later learn the third act was heavily reworked. Tony Gilroy is widely believed to have taken charge of reshoots, though filmmaker Gareth Edwards is believed to have remained involved.

Andor, a prequel series spearheaded by Gilroy, hasn't featured any input from Edwards. That's a pity when he was so instrumental in bringing Diego Luna's Cassian Andor to the screen in the first place, but he has been busy with other things.

Talking to Screen Rant (via SFFGazette.com), The Creator helmer revealed whether he's watched the Disney+ spin-off as a fan.

"Okay, full disclosure, we finished [The Creator] on Friday. I have not seen it," Edwards admitted. "I have not seen any TV. I've not seen any of the Disney+ anything. The only thing that I've seen is the ILM documentary, the Light of Magic, which is a phenomenal documentary, but I haven't had a chance."

"I'm sure I'll get back to you about it, but I saw the trailer when it came out, we were shooting at Pinewood at the time, and it looked fantastic. It's in, obviously, very great hands, and I'm excited for everybody that's involved."

If control of Rogue One was indeed wrestled from Edwards during reshoots, there's a strong chance he doesn't want to watch Andor. However, we'll take him at his word as it does sound like the director has had a busy few years developing his latest sci-fi epic.

In The Creator, amidst a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence, Joshua, a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife, is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war...and mankind itself.

Joshua and his team of elite operatives journey across enemy lines, into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory, only to discover the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child.

The Creator is set to be released in theaters on September 29.

I liked Andor, it’s well written and acted and directed. But in hindsight, Andor is missing that Star Wars spark that Edwards brought to Rogue One. It’s not the comedic moments, but more so the ethos of the Rebellion and of the Empire, that seems to be missing. It took me a little while to figure it out, but I think the issue is that Rogue One - reflecting George Lucas’s Star Wars as a whole - is firmly a classical liberal story. Its story of liberty vs tyranny is straight out of 1776 and 1941. But Gilroy’s Andor approaches the Rebellion and Empire through a decidedly anticolonialist, Marxist lens. The way the Empire is portrayed primarily as a colonial power, the way the manifesto and Andor’s experience culminate in a clash between workers and essentially riot police. It’s a different lens.

That’s not necessarily bad, but I think the Marxist lens ends up leaving out much of the moral/spiritual framework of OT Star Wars that undergirds the magic of the heroes’ tale, and it results most tangibly in Gilroy crafting a very different Rebellion with, by necessity, a very different figurehead. Andor seems to portray Luthen as the one who forms the basis of the Rebel network, with Mon Mothma merely as his naive financier, a wealthy progressive trying to figure out how to move beyond words into action. But Star Wars has well established that Bail Organa and Mon Mothma are pretty integral to the formation of the Rebel Alliance as its key spiritual and operational founders. So it’s odd that 1) Bail Organa’s rebel network is omitted, and 2) Mon Mothma is so reduced to such a background role. But, I think this difference in narrative/political framework is the reason why Gilroy has reshaped the Star Wars story.

What it means is that Andor doesn’t quite feel like Star Wars, and Season 2’s going to be weird because it’s not going to be able to line up with Rogue One.
