SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY Director Ron Howard Reflects On Taking Over The Movie And Disappointing Box Office

Filmmaker Ron Howard has talked candidly about taking over Solo: A Star Wars Story from Phil Lord and Chris Miller, sharing his thoughts on the underwhelming box office numbers the movie delivered...

In recent years, Lucasfilm has hit its fair share of bumps in the road, though the biggest might have been Solo: A Star Wars Story. The news that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller would direct was met with open arms from fans, though the studio didn't feel the same way, especially when the filmmakers began to veer away from what was on the page.

The directors were later fired and replaced with Ron Howard, and he was left with the difficult task of attempting to finish their movie in time for a release date Lucasfilm wasn't backing down from. The result was a spinoff met with okay reviews and a disappointing $393.2 million at the box office.

"There’s a lot I really love about Solo," Howard told THR (via SFFGazette.com) during a recent interview, "and yet it didn’t hit the zeitgeist when it came to the market. Damn."

"I understood that this difference had created a schism to the point where they weren’t going to be able to go on working together, and that was really unfortunate because I like Phil and Chris, and I also really admire them," he said of being tasked with finishing off the movie. "When I looked at the footage and read the script, which I liked, I felt like I understood what it was that the studio and Lucasfilm were looking for in finishing the movie and reshooting some of the movie."

"In a few places, I thought of reconceiving a few scenes, which they were open to. I had some really comforting conversations with Phil and Chris, who let me know that they weren’t leaving because I was coming in. For me, it was an absolute exercise in professionalism and friendship, and it indirectly led to a season of Willow, which we’re doing now [with] Jonathan Kasdan."

Solo wasn't actually a bad movie, and there's an awful lot to like about it. The decision to end with a cliffhanger doesn't seem like the smartest move in hindsight, because those box office receipts didn't exactly justify a sequel. However, we have seen Qi'ra recently return in Marvel Comics' Star Wars series, while Donald Glover is still expected to star in that live-action Lando series on Disney+.

Would you like to see Howard return to tell more stories set in this Galaxy Far, Far Away?

Can't stand the movie, the train hiest scene was good and I liked the hologram of Darth Maul but everything else sucked balls.

@marvel72 - I'm the opposite, I prefer experimental and new approach to films. I can't stand Rogue one or Book of Bobba Fett for just being a stupid "in-between-quel" or post sequel fan fiction. I think its more admirable in trying to do something new rather than just trying to fall in somewhere before, between, or only a couple of years after the OT trilogy.

TBH the only thing that felt like it was trying to breathe new life or genres into the Star Wars Universe is Star Wars Visions. I think Solo was actually admirable in trying to create a romantic film noir of the 40s or 50s like Casablanca or Rebel without a cause into the star wars universe rather than Rogue One.

@mastakilla39 - Rogue One is my favourite Disney Star Wars movie.

@marvel72 - I think a lot of fans feel that way. For me, despite the fact that I love everything in it, I really dislike it as a movie. Which is the exact opposite of how I feel about Solo. I really dislike a lot of the content in it, but overall, I feel it works well as a movie.

Think they made a right choice with Howard taking over. Maybe it was a great movie with Lord & Miller, but I do like the final product.

I do agree though that it came out at the wrong time. But even then, it feels more like a Star Wars movie than any of the sequels. Not an essential viewing, but like Clone Wars and Rebels it is a fun addition to the saga.

@bkmeijer1 - Agree. with D+ now making average to subpar prequels set in the OT trilogy nowadays, Solo would have fit right in. I prefer "movies" in general just due to the quality of product. There's a difference between a 250 mil movie and 250 mil tv show because each frame of a movie is just made with higher quality care because they don't have to worry about creating "filler" time to meet an episodic runtime.

I would've prefer Obi Wan to be a film instead of a limited series, but with Solo's giant flop I can see why they no longer want to make any more prequel character films from the skywalker saga.

@mastakilla39 - I think it also depends on the type of story they want to tell.

For me, Star Wars movies should feel like events. Which Solo definitely wasn't (but Rogue One was). Kenobi I'm not sure about. The involvement of Inquisitors and the nature of his mission don't feel like an event.

Ofcourse what an event is, is debatable. Both the Siege of Mandalore arc and the Mandalorian S2 finale are part of shows that otherwise didn't feel big, I sure did wanna see them on the big screen.

I wish we got to see what Lord and Miller originally planned for the version of Solo, especially what the late Michael K Williams would've been like as the villain.

The reshoots being so massive that the budget ballooned out of control certainly didn't help their chances at breaking even, but I'm not sure that "Han Solo origin movie, not starring Harrison Ford" would have set the box office on fire even under better circumstances. I think the hardcore Star Wars fanbase, who have been thought by EU to want in-depth backstories for everything, don't always remember that the general audience doesn't really care about that stuff.

I liked the movie more than most, I really think the biggest issue was the marketing. So many people I knew had no idea the movie was even out at the time, the trailer came super late and everyone had been conditioned to look for Star Wars in December and I think a lot of people just didn’t know about it at the time

My main issue with Solo was casting. Should've been Elgort. Woody is too woody for start wars. I did like bettany tho......
Rosraf

@ProfessorWhy - I agree the big issue was miscasting the lead (which everyone foresaw as a problem ahead of time). I don't think Elgort would have done any better, but it needed a different lead.

@ProfessorWhy - They definitely dodged a bullet there, with Elgort turning out to be a creep.

I actually liked the movie. It wasn’t amazing in any way. But, god help me, I did like it. The only problem with prequel movies like this though is that it’s too reliant on “oh, THAT’S how” moments. Oh THATS how he got his last name. (Which was absolutely ridiculous.) Oh THATS how he met Lando. Oh THATS how he got the Falcon. (But that’s not how the Falcon started out looking.) Oh THATS how the Falcon ended up looking like that. Oh THATS how he hooked up with Chewie. Oh THATS how he got those golden dice that are barely visible and only in A New Hope until they were attempted to be made relevant again for Last Jedi.

I liked Solo but there are parts I thought were dumb. Solo not being his last name was dumb. The rebels story was stupid. Did they forget that because of them, Val and Rio died? Maul’s reveal was dumb. The Kessel run was lame. The movie should have been a series or game. I do love the the main cast. I think they were all great. Labor and Han had great chemistry. The action was great. The sets were great. Seeing more of Han’s history minus some parts was really cool.

Although I enjoyed the movie, I still find it strange that of all the stories they could've told about the expansive Star Wars universe, they chose to do a young Han Solo movie.

Rogue One (still my fave Star Wars movie) was great because it introduced us to a whole bunch of new characters and served as a prequel of sorts to the Skywalker Saga. Solo felt like a story that didn't really need to be told. Still fun to watch though.

Unpopular opinion but I enjoyed this movie more than Episodes 7-9. 🤷‍♂️

Solo and Episodes 7-9 were like Star Trek 7-9. Nothing new. Just milking the cow. And nothing to care about.

Even with the Disney+ overrated fanfiction, it's like Disney is constantly trying to make their crap look like legit Star Wars. And when they seem to pull the imitation off, fans think it's a great achievement, even when the movie or TV show is bad. Sometimes though, as with the terrible Boba Fett series, Disney drops that ball and their "Star Wars" stops looking like Star Wars. And some people only then realize it was just imitation Star Wars all along.

The movie was a lot of fun, it got way too much undeserved hate. Wish it would get a followup for Glover's Lando and Qui'ra.

Star Wars fans need to see jedis with two lightsabers doing cartwheels and backwards flips or they get upset.
