STAR WARS: 7 Characters From The Sequel Trilogy We DON'T Need To See In Daisy Ridley's REY Movie

Daisy Ridley will return as Rey Skywalker in a Star Wars movie set 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, but there are some sequel trilogy characters we absolutely don't need to see join her!

The Star Wars sequel trilogy should have been nothing short of amazing, but the competing visions of two filmmakers - J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson - resulted in a series which struggled to make anyone truly happy.

At Star Wars Celebration this past April, Lucasfilm announced plans for a sequel to the sequels featuring Daisy Ridley as Rey Skywalker. Directed by Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, it will be set 15 years after the last events of the Skywalker Saga, telling the story of Rey rebuilding the New Jedi Order and the powers that rise to tear it down.

There was plenty to like in The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and, yes, even The Rise of Skywalker. However, as we look ahead to that sequel to the, er, sequels, we can't help but think certain characters should not make their return. That's either because there's nothing left to do with them or, to put it bluntly, they sucked! Still, if you think you know who to expect here, trust us when we say you'll likely be surprised.

To check out our selections (courtesy of SFFGazette.com), you just need to click on the "Next" button below.

7. Zorii Bliss

zorii-bliss-main-77af69f5

Visually, Zorii Bliss looks awesome. She's mysterious and enigmatic in a way that made Boba Fett such a hit when the original Star Wars trilogy was released. That's unfortunately where the comparisons stop because the character was otherwise completely uninteresting.

Keri Russell did her best with the material she was given to work with. However, throwing her into the mix as an old ally/love interest of Poe Dameron felt like a desperate attempt to flesh out the backstory of a character who had only ever been explored on a surface level.

Zorii also came across as one of those characters who exists to sell action figures and there's simply no need to explore her any further. It's a shame as we can't help but think there's a better version of the spice runner who could have resurfaced as an unexpected ally to Rey.

6. DJ

dj-databank-history-374bc386

Rian Johnson made many perplexing decisions while filming The Last Jedi, but introducing DJ has to be somewhere near the top of that list of "WTF?" moments.

Speculation ran rampant about who he might be and what he was up to, but in the end, he was just a basic baddie who betrayed Finn to the First Order. Not every Star Wars character needs a detailed history or connections to familiar heroes and villains; however, this guy felt like little more than a lazy way to get Finn from point A to B (the movie wouldn't have remotely suffered without him).

All Benicio del Toro's quirky performance did was highlight that there was at least a chance to do something interesting with DJ. Instead, he's a poor man's Lando Calrissian and there's now no need for Rey to cross paths with him on her next adventure, even if would serve as connective tissue to the sequel trilogy.

5. Maz Kanata

maz-bio-gallery-1-d900f764

As the Pirate Queen of Takodana, The Force Awakens set Maz Kanata up as a big deal, only to spectacularly drop the ball on a character many felt could be the next Yoda. We never did learn how she came into possession of Luke Skywalker's lightsaber and, yet again, she was a creation of convenience.

There's nothing bad to say about Lupita Nyong'o's performance because she did an excellent job. However, Johnson, clearly unimpressed with Abrams' creation, completely sidelined her in The Last Jedi

Given a glorified cameo in The Rise of Skywalker, any importance the supposedly Force-sensitive being once had was well and truly lost. Had Maz been established as a former Jedi or something along those lines, she could have been Rey's Yoda. Instead, she's been largely forgotten and that's a real shame.

4. Poe Dameron

poe-main-611e1021

Yes, we know many of you are going to see Oscar Isaac's Poe Dameron being listed here as some sort of terrible slight against the actor. That's not the case in any way, shape, or form. He's a star and someone we can only wish had been utilised properly by this Star Wars trilogy.

The Force Awakens was a solid introduction, but The Last Jedi largely confined him to a ship. He was given more to do in the final chapter, but by that point, both Isac and fans had pretty much zoned out (something that's obvious from the way he delivers that now-infamous line about Emperor Palpatine's return).

He should have been the new Han Solo; as things stand, Poe is barely Wedge Antilles. What more is there to be done with him as a supporting character in Rey's movie? The best move will be to say he fell heroically in battle or is in charge of the new government's military forces.

3. Jannah

jannah-main-4b348047

Original plans called for Jannah to be revealed as Lando Calrissian's long-lost daughter. There wasn't a huge amount of room for this subplot in Episode IX, but it would have been an effective callback to the First Order stealing the children of those who fought in the Rebellion to use them as soldiers.

The whole thing was scrapped, doing everyone involved a disservice (including Billy Dee Williams and Naomi Ackie). That entire group of warriors was an odd addition to the movie and making Jannah Finn's new love interest after the backlash aimed at Rose was one of Lucasfilm's sorriest decisions.

To be honest, there's just no need for Jannah to return. Sure, she could be shown as Finn's wife or something along those lines but there's no need for it. Heck, we wouldn't be shocked if most of you had forgotten she even existed!

2. Supreme Leader Snoke/Emperor Palpatine

ep8-ff-006360-c95dace6

Lucasfilm dropped the ball on Supreme Leader Snoke. Allowing Johnson to kill him may have been a good way to shock fans, but it also undid everything Abrams laid the groundwork for in The Force Awakens

Of course, later revealing that he was simply a failed Emperor Palpatine clone puppetted by the Empire's leader only made the whole thing more confusing. If he was a clone, why did he look and sound so different? The lack of backstory also makes the entire situation for anyone who doesn't consume every bit of tie-in content.

The Mandalorian seems to have abandoned plans to reveal how he was created and bringing Palpatine back again in any way - even if he is Rey's "grandfather' - just feels ill-advised on every possible level. The best thing this movie could do is move on and pretend all this never happened.

1. Luke Skywalker

hero-image-copy

It pains us to say this, but we don't want to see Luke Skywalker in the movie. The sequel trilogy failed Mark Hamill on nearly every conceivable level, and throwing him into the mix as a cheerful Force Ghost in The Rise of Skywalker did little to make up for previous missteps.

We've seen a much better interpretation of Luke on television and, if there's any movie Hamill should reprise this role in, it should be Dave Filoni's Heir to the Empire. There, the younger Jedi can hopefully find some measure of redemption when he teams up with Ahsoka Tano to stop Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Where does that leave Rey and who can mentor her? Perhaps nobody. Maybe Hayden Christensen's Anakin Skywalker or her fallen foe-turned-friend, Ben Solo. Then again, perhaps it's best to just move on from the Skywalker Saga altogether.

Disagree strongly on Maz. Rest I am in agreement with altough I would flip in Rose and flip out Jannah. I think Jannah was interesting enough that I wouldnt mind learning more about her.

They said they were done with the skywalker saga and yet all they have done since are shows connected to the skywalker saga and now a direct continuation of the last film to caim to be part of the skywalker saga

they havent even put out one project that wasnt connected to that saga

Need something either in the far past showing the beginnings of the sith and jedi or something in the far future when everyone we know is dead

Yea, if Marvel is struggling the way it is, I really wonder how well Star Wars will transition back to the movie world after being a Disney+ exclusive franchise for the past 4 years. Especially the Filoniverse film, which I'm the most excited for out of the ones they have announced... which is the cinematic finale of a bunch of Disney+ shows.

@WakandanQueen - The Filoniverse film will not have mass appeal. People have complained about MCU homework for their films. That movie will have more hours of TV leading up to it than any other.

I’m good if we recast Rey and have her as an old lady in a future setting.

I barely accept Luke to be a legit Jedi after his extremely short training with Yoda, regardless of what other training he continued on his own.

It’s just not comparable to training since a youngling for your entire life with nothing but Jedi masters.

Rey is even worse, and to call her the last Jedi is an insult. She’s force sensitive, and comes from a “powerful bloodline” but that’s about it. Maybe she has some natural talent, but a full blown Jedi? I think not. Having her restart the Jedi order is equivalent to having a child who dropped out in the 3rd grade turn around and start teaching other children and them bestowing them with doctorate degrees.

Having her aged up, and having spend a good portion of her lifetime training and improving is the only way I could take her seriously.

Lastly, regardless of her training and abilities, she is not and never will be a Skywalker

If MCU can reboot Kang or drop the storyline. Disney can drop EP 7-9 and have a do-over set after Luke, Han, Leia have passed peacefully.

Aren’t the rumors that Disney is going to win some grace and favour back with the fans by doing a real sequel trilogy based on the EU, albeit with maybe recasting Luke, Leia and Han.

Hell to Luke being on this list. I really wanna see him interact with force ghost Anakin, and this looks like it's the only place left to do that.

Aside from that, the only characters I wanna see return are Poe and Finn. With the latter as the Jedi Grandmaster. He knows more than anyone how important it is to offer others a place to belong

Just do a time skip like a hundred plus years into the future, after a new Jedi order and academy has been established. Don't say who built it, but have the students and masters talk about Master Skywalker and Master Kenobi like these ancient founder legends who defeated the Empire and triumphed over The Dark Side's influence across the galaxy. You don't even need to mention the First Order by name.

Have an entirely new story set up from there, and don't number it "Episode X" or whatever. Just give it its own title (like how Episode V was just "The Empire Strikes Back" originally, and VI was just "Return of the Jedi"). You can loosely tie it to the Skywalker saga if you want, or even make the protagonist a student obsessed with learning more about Luke and Yoda or something and comes across one of Luke's old journals or notes about his training on Ahch-To. Have the student tap into something Luke was watching out for, or even set up a story where the new Jedi Order doesn't talk about the Dark Side, and the student reads a lot about it through Luke's writing. And of course something emerges to challenge the teachings of the new Order.

You could easily have it ignore the sequel trilogy and serve as a direct sequel to Return of the Jedi.

i do not need to see the movie in general
zephyrrr
zephyrrr - 11/20/2023, 4:41 PM
I mean, the same is true of every character from the sequel trilogy because they a) didn't flesh them out well, and b) didn't do anything interesting with them. I don't want to see Finn either, who is paper-thin and useless, which John Boyega clearly knows from how he has disowned this whole pointless endeavor. And so on with Palpatine, etc.

The only remotely interesting character is Ben Solo but they killed him off. His character, while annoying in a few ways, had massive storytelling potential going forward - imagine a Jedi who is an outcast because his crimes make him irredeemable to society and the republic, who is haunted by the BILLIONS of people he killed, who can never outrun his tragic past. That's fertile ground for a great narrative, but of course, they killed him and left us with vanilla Rey.

The franchise just needed some creative spark, some imagination, but JJ Abrams only offers competence. He's never been great, just "okay". People talk sh!t about Rian Johnson but he did the best with the sh!t sandwich he was given by JJ, who created a series of mysteries with no solution, as usual. JJ chose to banish Luke because he didn't know what to do with him (Michael Ardnt admitted as much, "Every time we used Luke as a character he was just too powerful and we didn't know what to do so we decided to exile him"; in other words, they didn't banish him for a good story reason, just to make up for their lack of creativity), he created Snoke without knowing what his deal was, had no arc for the reunion of the legacy characters, hinted at the mystery parentage of Rey without even knowing what it was or why it mattered, and basically had a hollow "Emperor has no clothes" mystery box.

Without a planned trilogy, what was Johnson to do? His movie is far from perfect but his explanation for why Luke would turn his back on everything is just about the only reason that makes a lick of sense. Because Snoke meant nothing, it was easy to dispose of him to let Adam Driver take center stage. What a mess. Then, of course, JJ returned to butcher things further and leave the fandom further divided and the general public less interested in SW than they've ever been.

Remember the nostalgic feeling when The Phantom Menace came out? Sure, the movie was not good, but its release was surroounded with the notion that Star Wars was a special, inventive, dazzling, exciting place full of playful, scary, roguish, funny, tragic, heroic characters. I don't care about the political ideology of the stuff - whether they cast women or feature a gay kiss or a Black dude, whatever, do as you will - I only care about great stories. And, with the exception of Andor, Lucasfilm via Disney has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are incapable of delivering.
