After taking a year off, Star Wars Celebration will be making its highly-anticipated return next spring -- this time landing in Chicago, Illinois. Disney and Lucasfilm hope to bring together Star Wars fans from all over the world to downtown Chicago's McCormick Place from April 11-15, 2019. McCormick Place is best-known for being the largest convention center in North America, so there will be plenty of room for Star Wars fans from all across the Galaxy!
Today, Lucasfilm has released a trailer to celebrate tickets going on sale, which you can watch HERE:
As the name suggests, the famous convention is packed full of events and festivities that commemorate all things Star Wars, with numerous panels dedicated to every aspect of the beloved franchise. At the 2017 Celebration, there were many particularly memorable moments. For example, there was a 40th Anniversary retrospective, the first revealing trailer for Rian Johnson's
The Last Jedi and a touching tribute to Carrie Fisher, where many cast and crew shared fond memories of the late actress. There wasn't a Star Wars Celebration in 2018, after Disney & Lucasfilm opted to take a year off from the annual tradition, but it was announced this past spring that the Celebration will continue in 2019. At the time, the dates and place of the event were unknown, but the newly-released video answers all those questions, and more.
One can only speculate as to what's in store for Star Wars Celebration 2019. Many fans are expecting the debut of the very first teaser for the still untitled
Episode IX. However, the announcement for this came before the debut of
Solo: A Star Wars Story, which has underperformed with both audiences and critics thus far.
Luckily, Lucasfilm has plenty of new projects rumored and in development that could result in surprising announcements at the convention next spring. They have signed The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson to assist in creating a trilogy of new films that are "disconnected from the Skywalker saga". Game of Thrones co-creators David Benioff & D.B. Weiss have also been tapped by Disney to do a series of films, which is still in the early development stage at this time. And then there's the recently-announced Boba Fett film, which is expected to be set post-ROTJ, and will be helmed by James Mangold (The Wolverine, Logan). So I think it's safe to say that Disney and Lucasfilm have plenty on their plate when it comes to content to present at Celebration.
What do you think about Disney and Lucasfilm taking a year off in 2018? Will you be attending the Celebration in Chicago next April?
