STAR WARS: Daisy Ridley Admits Reaction To "Super Divisive" Sequel Trilogy Is "Still Upsetting"

Both The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker split opinions and Daisy Ridley has now shared her thoughts on the reaction to the Star Wars sequels and that divisive kiss between Rey and Ben Solo/Kylo Ren.

Despite borrowng a few too many ideas from A New Hope, J.J. Abrams' The Force Awakens proved that a Star Wars sequel trilogy could work. It introduced an intriguing set of characters and mysteries, only for Rian Johnson to undo almost all of his predecessor's contributions to the franchise in The Last Jedi

It was a great sci-fi movie in a lot of ways, but not a good Star Wars story; the mysterious Supreme Leader Snoke was killed with no explanation, Luke Skywalker was a coward who fled after contemplating the murder of his nephew, and it turned out Rey's parents were nobodies, after all.

When Colin Trevorrow parted ways with Lucasfilm, Abrams was enlisted to deliver a fan-pleasing Episode IX - later titled The Rise of Skywalker - which, by undoing Johnson's contributions to the Skywalker Saga, ended up being a disaster. Every attempt at making fans happy just led to more confusion and the movie tried to cram in so much story, it ultimately felt rushed and messy.

Talking to Josh Horowitz (via SFFGazette.com), Daisy Ridley - who had to deal with more than a few questionable moments as "Rey Skywalker" - was asked to share her thoughts on the mixed response to the 2019 finale.

"Was I surprised? Uh, I think it's still upsetting because you don't want people to feel like you've not served the thing that they're a fan of," she admitted. "Rian's one was so divisive. It really felt like the first one...everyone was responsive in a similar way. And then Rian's one was super divisive and the last one was super divisive. It didn't change how I felt about it."

"Before I had breakfast with Kathy last year...I had five people come up to me and go, 'Are they going to do any more with you?' It was really strange," she said of how the response from fans has changed since The Rise of Skywalker was released. "In the six months before that, the way in which I'd been greeted by people's responses was quite different to the way I had been. I think time had passed and it didn't feel so immediate."

In The Rise of Skywalker's final act Kylo Ren - who had put the Dark Side behind him and returned to his Ben Solo identity - lay dying after sacrificing himself to help save Rey from Emperor Palpatine. With that, they kissed, a moment which divided the fanbase.

According to Ridley, they shot a version of the scene "without" the infamous smooch. She added, "I felt like we all...it felt earned. What's interesting again is intentionality. My feeling in that moment was that it was a goodbye so that felt earned. You could call a kiss a thousand things but I felt like it was a goodbye and that whole scene felt so emotional."

Later in the interview, Ridley was asked about rumours Helen Mirren was being lined up to play a much older version of Rey in an earlier iteration of her upcoming Dawn of the Jedi movie. She admitted to never hearing about those supposed plans and said the expectation was always that she'd return to the role somewhere down the line.

JJ Abrams irreparably damaged the Star Wars franchise in 2015 and everything since has been a desperate struggle uphill.

@TheManWithoutFear - to me JJ tried to revive it but Rian Johnson destroyed it for good.

@TheManWithoutFear - I like TFA but they should have had atleast an outline for the trilogy made before they started shooting.

@Blergh - And for me, both Force Awakens and Last Jedi were near-perfect films, but Rise of Skywalker tanked it by caving to "fan" pressure and delivering a confused mess.

"super divisive", don't know anyone who defended epi 9, that one is widely regard as just being bad. epi 8 for some reason you find some crazy people from time to time who defend that thing. epi 7 is the one mostly "accepted" but also because it's just New Hope 2.0. Still a horrible idea bringing her back.

@Urubrodi - I defend 9 to the point that, I think it’s the best film they could have made with what they where left with at the end of 8

@Urubrodi - I have a friend, who is not a Star Wars fan and just part of the GA who went to go see Episode 9 on opening weekend, who loved it after leaving the theater.

There are many people out there who primarily evaluate a movie based on how entertaining it is. This same friend also watches a lot of trash TV and listens to generic pop music.

Most of the GA is like this. The proportions of true fans in an audience is fairly low. The more passionate star wars fans may have turned away from the series because of story, character decisions, etc. But the normies in the GA, they just want to be entertained. If stuff like Star Wars and Marvel are doing worse with the GA, it’s simply because they are less entertaining to them than they used to be.

@Urubrodi - I agree with your assessment of the movies but u don't think rey or the actress are the problems
Clintthahamster
Clintthahamster - 1/30/2024, 8:15 AM
@Urubrodi - 8 had its issues, but at least Johnson was trying to do something fresh with the franchise that honored his vision as an artist. If you average JJ's contribution between 7 and 9, I'd say he did more harm than good.
Urubrodi
Urubrodi - 1/30/2024, 8:55 AM
@Vigor - Oh I don't think the actress is the problem, but the character of Rey is tainted to a point that in my view it'd be better to just move forward to the future and leave the sequel characters behind.
Urubrodi
Urubrodi - 1/30/2024, 8:57 AM
@ClintThaHamster - The thing is that Star Wars is not the type of franchise where you should just let a director go rogue and do whatever he wants. There needs to be some vision behind, some direction of what it needs to be. if Johnson was tackling a spinoff movie detached from the Skywalker saga, maybe it'd work better, but as a follow up to to the 7 movies prior, it was bad imo.
Urubrodi
Urubrodi - 1/30/2024, 8:58 AM
@Twenty23Three - Well from that point of view sure, but that doesn't make it a good movie. Maybe it was an impossible task to salvage the trilogy, but Lucasfilm are the ones to blame for putting themselves in such situation.
Urubrodi
Urubrodi - 1/30/2024, 9:01 AM
@mountainman - There will always be exceptions and yeah the general audience will tend to be more forgiving if they don't know what happened before. But when you take for example the box office of 7 which was over 2 billion with the box office of 9 which barely cracked a billion, is not great considering it was the end of the trilogy. Critical reception and how it performed on the eyes of Star Wars fans was far from great.
DevilsDreams
DevilsDreams - 1/30/2024, 9:30 AM
@Urubrodi - If they put a decent team behind it, that focused on the lore, character development, etc, then it could be good... sadly if you've got a director that just wants to piss off half the potential fan base then it is probably doomed from the start.

@Urubrodi - "The thing is that Star Wars is not the type of franchise where you should just let a director go rogue and do whatever he wants."

Agreed, 100%. But the fact that that wasn't the case here is not Rian Johnson's fault. Blame Abrams. Blame Kennedy (I know folks around here love to do that.)

Personally, I blame Lucas for taking his toys and going home when the critics panned the prequel trilogy. He had every chance to complete the nonology on his own terms, but sold out to Disney instead.

IMO, Johnson's only "crime" was to take the baton and try to let the sequel trilogy stand on its own terms, divorced from the trappings of the previous six movies. "Let the past die. Kill if it you have to." Imagine a world where episode 9 picked up where 8 left off. Poe is a broken man after singlehandedly costing the rebels most of their fleet. Rey knows she's on her own and has to forge her own path. Phasma returns against all odds and puts Finn to the ultimate test. Kylo is the undisputed leader of the First Order, free of his connection with Rey after killing Snoke, and ready to rule on his own terms.

At the end of the day, RoS is a FAR worse film than TLJ, and it's mostly because Abrams refused to build on the foundation that Johnson built.

I feel like she always seems to have a good take on things.

I stand by anyone calling for those films to be wiped from canon, but I wouldn't at all mind seeing her return as Rey Skywalker or Jaina Solo Fel or somebody else along those lines.

Or even a female Darth Vader clone?
DevilsDreams
DevilsDreams - 1/30/2024, 9:32 AM
@ObserverIO - I would have loved to have seen them use Jaina and Jacen, include Mara Jade, at least use SOME of the EU stuff that had existed!
I think the biggest shame is that it took them so long to get it back off the ground, by the time they did you have an aging cast, Ford just isn't interested, Fisher has unfortunately passed on, so you just have Mark Hamill really left, so it immediately made those storylines a lot harder to work out.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 1/30/2024, 11:47 AM
@DevilsDreams - Yeah, that is the real tragedy of the situation. Even more tragic considering they never got those three back together in the same scene, not even once.

I guess there's always uncanny valley Leia to fall back on. She seemed to be popular when she showed up at the end of Rogue One, 10 days before Carrie Fisher's actual death.

Regardless of my, or anyone’s opinions on the films, the reaction was always going to be the same. Star Wars fans are the OG pissy fanboys.

@Twenty23Three - ikr? What kind of idiots actually care about things anymore? lol They should just accept that what they cared for deeply for decades doesn’t mean anything to the corporation that bought it, and consume the content it has become like Good. Little. Drones. Bunch of sooks.
Twenty23Three
Twenty23Three - 1/31/2024, 8:37 AM
@Tasmaniac - that’s a fairly dramatic reaction. At no point did I say people shouldn’t care about things? If people deeply care about everything Stars Wars before the new movies guess what? All of that is still there, nothing is being taken away or destroyed, and no one is making anyone consume anything they don’t want to. If you're going to get get that upset I suggest seeking therapy

The movies aren’t as bad as you think. I recently watched all 9 movies with my friend. She is a huge fan. And I couldn’t stand 1 or 2. Save for the darth maul fight and pod racing scene. I couldn’t get into 1. And Attack of the clones had some good moments. Mostly towards the end. But ultimately unforgettable. Revenge of the sith was fun and dark. I liked that. Honestly, the only good prequel movie. Then 4 was boring. But I loved 5 and 6. My favorite of the collection.

Then Force Awakens was fun. I know it was basically a reboot of episode 4. But I was entertained and enjoyed it. Then I saw Last Jedi, I think had it been any other sci-fi movie. People would enjoy it more. But since it was Star Wars and went against the grain. It just really brought out the worst in fans. I liked the movie. Probably the best of the sequel trilogy. Even though I dislike the casino world. And episode 9, was okay or meh. However I did like Kylo Ren’s performance, he was the best character in the new trilogy. I liked the ending. But I feel that with clone wars, you can fix many of the mistakes of these movies. Hopefully this new Rey movie fixes some of the sequels mistakes. And the shows happening now, add more depth and info for these movies.

She seems to carry it with grace, which is really admirable given the immense hate she and her costars got.

Episode 7 was alright, basically a retread of the same old but 8/9 completely sh’t the bed for me. Especially 8 just felt like a massive middle finger and went into torture porn territory for me.

I do hope her movie redeems the character a bit to audiences, she as an actress was never really the issue. The cast was fine, what sucked was the writing for 8. That movie is the lynchpin of Star Wars’ downfall. I can at least appreciate Ep9 as a reactionary try to fix the mistakes made by 8. But I can’t defend 8.
