STAR WARS: Damon Lindelof Is The Latest Filmmaker To Part Ways With Lucasfilm After Leaving Upcoming Movie

Yet another filmmaker has parted ways with Lucasfilm, and while we don't know whether creative differences were involved, Damon Lindelof is no longer developing a Star Wars movie for the troubled studio.

Well, this feels awfully familiar.

With Lucasfilm still struggling to bring Star Wars back to the big screen, the untitled movie we're expecting to arrive in theaters in 2025 just lost its writers. An official announcement is expected to be made during Star Wars Celebration next month, but Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson have reportedly exited the project.

According to Above The Line (via SFFGazette.com), they decided to walk away in mid-February after delivering the first draft of the movie's screenplay.

Ms. Marvel director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy remains attached and it's thought a new writer or writers were already circling the project when Lindelof and Britt-Gibson made their departure. It's not uncommon for screenplays to change hands, of course, and it might have always been the plan for this duo to simply lay the foundation with their story.

Still, it's a little troubling that a studio which, in recent years, has been besieged by creative differences with filmmakers just lost a writer as high-profile as the Lost, Star Trek, and Watchmen scribe.

On a slightly more positive note, production reportedly remains on track, with shooting expected to begin next February. That gives Lucasfilm an entire year to get the story where they want it, though it's interesting that this news follows recent comments from Lindelof which saw him cast doubt on his mystery Star Wars movie.

"I will just say that for reasons that I can’t get into on this Sunday morning, on this day, the degree of difficulty [to make a Star Wars project] is extremely, extremely, extremely high," he explained.

"If it can’t be great, it shouldn’t exist...I think it’s possible that sometimes when you hold something in such high reverence and esteem, you start to get in the kitchen and you just go, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t be cooking. Maybe I should just be eating.’ We’ll just leave it at that point."

This untitled Star Wars movie is currently set to be released in theaters on December 19, 2025. Another is expected to follow in 2027, though we recently learned that it's unlikely to be Rogue Squadron or whatever Kevin Feige had planned.

KK is a terrible executive and needs to be fired asap but she won't. Her last year is 2024. So much damage to the star wars brand because they kept her. Awful. Really awful.🤡

@AmazingFILMporg - don't think Kathy is to blame here though. Lindelof just leaves because he can't make it great (and judging from the quote, that ''great'' is very much a creation of his own association with the '77 movie)

@AmazingFILMporg @bkmeijer1 - I doubt its KK's fault. People keep thinking Lindelof is an amazing writer. He's had more misses than hits. He wrote World War Z, Star Trek Into Darkness, Prometheus, and Tomorrowland...all franchise killers. The only great thing he's written recently is Watchmen TV Show.

His scripts are known to be interesting and philosophical in the beginning then fail to deliver towards the ending. I was never confident he can deliver a good star wars script either so not a big loss in my opinion. Fans can wait another 4 - 5 years for a new boss.

@mastakilla39 - yeah, I agree. If Lindelof says he feels he can't deliver (greatness), then that I what I believe is why he's not attached to it anymore

@mastakilla39 - I liked World War Z, Star Trek into Darkness was great, Prometheus script was incredible (the movie changed much for the worse), but Tomorrowland was crap.

Good. Lindleof is a big part of the JJ Abrams gang. Keep them all far away from Star Wars.

I only enjoy Star Wars from Filoni. Mandalorian is overrated and only cater to the general audience.

He should lead movie efforts imo.

Star Wars should have been shelved in 1978 when it still had fans.

@dracula - Hard to answer. You're right, Empire had fans so I'm wrong there, but the holiday special was soooooooo hilariously bad.

Lucasfilm is getting a bad reputation of hiring talented people then making them quit.

Man! The Star Wars IP is a mess!

@Forthas - no. no its not. this is them trying to please the vocal bitchy asshats that call themselves star wars fans. each time they attempt to please these fools it backfires and the [frick]ers find some new angle to be pissy about. anyone working on star wars behind and in front of the cameras is terrified at the immense pressure that comes with trying to "get it right" there is no way to do that with these vocal minority teething children. hell look at them now turning on the dave filioni and john favreau.a couple years ago these were the saviors and gods of star wars. now for whatever asshat reasons these trolls find they have turned on the "great ones" so yes i find it wholey believable the process of getting this next movie going is a horrible experience for those involved. everyone second guessing and changing each other because of toxic clowns.
