STAR WARS: Michael Waldron Shares Update On Kevin Feige's Movie; "We're Finally Into It In Earnest"

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron has shared an update on Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige's upcoming movie set in that Galaxy Far, Far Away, and it's progressing well.

Marvel Studios has delivered hit after hit since 2008, and Kevin Feige is the mastermind behind that success. He's also a huge Star Wars fan, of course, and is producing a standalone movie for Lucasfilm. This has led to a lot of conspiracy theories online that Feige is being eyed to take over Lucasfilm from Kathleen Kennedy in order to put the franchise back on what many believe would be the right track.

As far as we know, that's not happening, though Kennedy could do with some help in restoring the franchise's former glory on the big screen. The Rise of Skywalker was released way back in 2019, and with Rogue Squadron unlikely to arrive next year, it could be half a decade or more before the Star Wars franchise returns to theaters (after getting yearly releases since 2015's The Force Awakens).

We still have no real details about what direction Feige's Star Wars movie is heading in, but there's a lot of excitement for the project, especially with Michael Waldron penning the screenplay. Talking to Variety (via SFFGazette.com), the Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness shared an update on how work is progressing, saying that "We’re finally into it in earnest."

"I mean, I’m writing away. It’s a lot of fun. I’m enjoying having the freedom on that to do something that’s not necessarily a sequel or anything," Waldron teased. "It maybe has a little bit less of a — it just doesn’t have a bunch of TV shows and movies that you’re servicing on top of it, the way I did with 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.' So it’s nice. It feels like a different exercise."

In other words, this is a standalone story rather than a sequel or spinoff. That's an exciting prospect on a number of levels, and we can't wait to see what corner of this Galaxy Far, Far Away we're heading to.

Keep checking back here for the latest as we're bound to learn more about this one soon.

It’s good that they started writing but what does Earnest have to do with it?

@SpaceParanoids - Know what I mean, Vern?

Just like with many other Star Wars movies that haven't happened (yet), I kinda expect this to not get any further than the writing stage or big name leaving the project over creative differences either.

For the time being, Star Wars should just focus on tv shows in my opinion.

@bkmeijer1 - This is actually the only one that I can see happening. Apart from Inhumans, everything that Feige had the intention of doing in the MCU has eventually happened, even if it was at a different moment than originally planned. The D&D trilogy was doomed from the beginning, and even though I was actually exited for Johnson's trilogy, it made sense it didn't happen after TLJ was so divisive. It also helps they are taking it as one movie for now, instead of announcing trilogies which hadn't started to be developed.

@Pssst - I think with the Disney+ shows now also added to his portfolio, that is where Feige's focus is now also directed towards.

His Star Wars movie announcement and Disney+ rollout came around the same time, so maybe he already fitted it into his schedule. Although maybe covid threw a wrench in that as well.

@Pssst - I wouldn't say the D&D series was doomed from the beginning. I feel like it would have definitely happened but the horrible reception Game of Thrones' ending got was what killed it.

When you think about it, if people had loved the ending of GoT it would have gone down in history as one of the greatest TV shows ever made. It actually still is viewed as that, but it has quite a big blemish on it and fans basically hate them now. If they had ended the show in a satisfying way they would have become extremely hot commodities. But because it ended so bad they are now viewed as villains that ruined an amazing show.

That really killed their momentum and probably their Star Wars plans. I mean, I don't know of a single thing they've worked on since the end of GoT.

I want to see a story with a pinch of fantasy

Outer Rim "barbarian" species, warriors and epic battles... Also, other facets of the force.

bkmeijer1 - 5/12/2022, 7:11 AM
@Repian - that would be pretty cool. There is already magic, so introducing fantasy elements into Star Wars shouldn't be too hard

Also, this makes me realize I want another adventure tabletop RPG from Star Wars. Force & Destiny has some fun stuff, but its pretty old already.

@bkmeijer1 - Star Wars Legion is really good. It's not so much an RPG as a war game in the same vein as Warhammer 40k. But it's fantastic.

@CorndogBurglar - haven't heard of it. Now that I've looked it up though, and seeing how it is also from Fantasy Flight I believe you

Well the Feige/Waldron collaboration gave us amazing writing with DS2 so I'm sure this SW project will be just as amazing.

The script was the absolute weakest part of MoM, and in hindsight, Loki too. Hmmmmm.

@PC04 - same here. Wouldn't mind him show up in the Mandoverse shows though.

Think both he and Prince Xizor would fit in fairly well.

@bkmeijer1 - While we're at it maybe we lobby for a remake of Shadow of the Empire?
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 5/12/2022, 12:11 PM
@PC04 - Heir to the Empire and Shadow of the Empire deserve to be recanonized in some way. Star Wars stuff with Empire in the name is always great
PC04
PC04 - 5/12/2022, 12:25 PM
@bkmeijer1 - You're right...anything with 'Empire' is usually good..which means to get the best game or movie possible from Star Wars all we need do is call it; "Empire of the Empire: Empire's Empire" and it'll be great!
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 5/12/2022, 12:39 PM
@PC04 - The Empire Empires Back.

Why does replacing words in the titles of other Star Wars movies work so well though?

1: The Phantom Empire/The Empire Menace
2: Attack of the Empire/Empire of the Clones
3: Revenge of the Empire/Empire of the Sith
4: A New Empire
6: Return of the Empire/Empire of the Jedi
7: The Empire Awakens
8: The Last Empire
9: The Empire of Skywalker/The Rise of Empire

HELL YES! Sick of the skywalker sage, let's get nuts & focus on a will in the world between worlds. Shit you could keep it simple & focus on a regular citizen on courasant who's a theme park manager or video game designer. Just something different would be nice is all, Maybe a live action take on a Tattooine Rhapsody rock band with a completely different group. Bring it on!
