STAR WARS: New Novel Finally Reveals The Name Of Rey's Parents (And Emperor Palpatine's Cloned "Son")

This year, Lucasfilm will release Star Wars: Shadow of the Sith, & an excerpt from the book reveals more about Rey's parents, including their names (meaning we finally know what to call Palpatine's "son").

Star Wars: The Force Awakens introduced Rey and blatantly went out of its way to tease a mystery behind who her parents might be. Obi-Wan Kenobi, Han Solo, and Luke Skywalker were all named as potential candidates for the young Jedi's father at one time or another, but The Last Jedi established that she was the offspring of junk traders who had sold her for drinking money.

It was a reveal that fell flat, but many felt it was better than forcing a connection to a pre-existing character. However, with Lucasfilm in damage control mode heading into The Rise of Skywalker, the decision was made to have Rey be Emperor Palpatine's granddaughter. Her father was one of the villain's clones (albeit a powerless one) who escaped and had a child with a woman he fell in love with.

In an excerpt shared by USA Today from Adam Christopher's Star Wars: Shadow of the Sith, we learn that Dathan and Miramir spent years fleeing from Palpatine and his followers. This novel finds them on the run from Ochi of Bestoon, and we're definitely curious to learn more about what led to them leaving Rey on Jakku and perhaps even the Emperor's early plans for his cloned offspring.

Billy Howle and Jodie Comer played Rey's parents in The Rise of Skywalker, and Dathan and Miramir gave their lives to protect her location and keep the fledgling Jedi from her evil grandfather.

Palpatine's return is a decision still surrounded by plot holes, and fans remain optimistic that we'll learn more about that soon. The Mandalorian has hinted that Moff Gideon was key in creating Supreme Leader Snoke, a vessel used by Palpatine to wrest control over The First Order during its early rise.

Star Wars: Shadow of the Sith will be released on June 28.

@Spock0Clock - not sure I understand the context of your gif usage.

10 bucks because they surprised you, or 10 bucks says they're wrong?

@ElricReturns - I never thought they'd dig more into Rey's mother enough to give her a name, but in hindsight it was a sucker's bet.

I (still) don't like Dathan being a Palpatine clone. Could've just made him a random Sith Eternal dude that was close to Palpatine, but fled after he met Miramir. That would also give Palpatine a reason to hunt him, given that he probably had sensitive info on Exegol.

But anyway, Dathan and Miramir are pretty cool names. Not necessarily Star Wars names, but they do feel like fantasy names.

Wow, I had no idea Jodie Comer was in this movie. Can't bring myself to watch it a second time to check her out since I thought Rise of Skywalker was so

(And I thought myself to be a longtime Star Wars fanatic.)

@tylerzero - I knew she was in it, because I remember thinking ''why would they waste Jodie Comer on just this one scene?''
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 5/22/2022, 9:03 AM
@bkmeijer1 - I think it comes down to this: it's not a "waste" for J.J. Abrams, because he gets to work with Comer, possibly establish a rapport that might encourage her to work with him in a future project. Abrams doesn't necessarily care about Star Wars' future any more than he cares about any of the franchises he leaves in shambles behind him.

But even setting that aside, I'm not sure Comer is completely burned for Star Wars anyway. If Dave Filoni announced he was doing a Mara Jade series set in the Mandalorian-era with Comer as Jade, I don't think people would be arming themselves with pitchforks about it. (And even then, if Filoni's story establishes that Miramir herself may have been a Mara Jade clone, which is very on-brand for Palpatine to arrange something like that, then the casting makes sense anyway.) Just as an example.

In the end, the franchise is just a series of movies (and shows and books, etc.). I've seen this expectation from some users on this site that Star Wars must attain some kind of authoritative integrity above and beyond what other film franchises do, and that anything short of that is like a personal betrayal. I've not always been the most mature about my own personal bugaboos, but the Star Wars thing does frequently come across as particularly toxic and childish.

(Not talking about you, here. For the record.)

@Spock0Clock - yeah, that's true. Wouldn't mind it if they brought back Comer in a completely different role either. It's not like it's not gonna confuse people, since most people probably already forgot she was in IX.

As for that integretity, I get why people want that. I'll admit, I even want that to a degree. Luke is probably my all-time favorite movie character and I didn't like what direction Rian took him in, but it's indeed not something I take my pitchfork out of the shed for.

In the end, most fandoms have a toxic subgroup that ruins it for the majority. Just think death threats towards Wyatt Russell at the time of FATWS. Made no sense whatsoever.

Too late to retcon this abomination. Let's just all try to forget what they did to such beloved characters. Forget but never forgive.

@MarvelousMarty - Agreed. But sadly it is too late. They had one shot at giving us the reunion of Luke, Han, Leia and Chewie, one chance and they blew it forever.

I just consider the Disney trilogy a parallel universe continuity and the books, comics and games mainline canon. So they can shit out whatever they want with this trilogy for all I care.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 5/22/2022, 9:37 AM
@BritishMonkey - so where does it branche off?

Where Ezra pulls Ahsoka out of the explosion in Rebels (creating the timeline where she is alive in Mandalorian, Boba Fett, etc.) and the original timeline where Ezra he doesn't (leading to Ahsoka dying and eventually the sequels)?

I don't know, I just pulled this out of my arse, but I guess it works.

@bkmeijer1 - I... couldn't say. I haven't gotten around to seeing Rebels yet.
In my mind and in my preference I see it as after Return of the Jedi, The Book of Boba Fett and Mandalorian occurs then somewhere down the line after those it goes into the Jedi Outcast stuff. And way before Phantom Menace is the KOTOR stuff.

@bkmeijer1 - Lucas Sw and then Disney SW. So 1-6, clone wars, and I add Rogue one cause it fits nicely in. I liked Rebels for the most part but I see it more of a Disney product than a Lucas one so I exclude it too. There is no Skywalker saga there is just the story of Star Wars about how a farmboy with a small rag team of rebels and scoundrels took down the Evil Empire with love and understanding and cool fight skills.

There's a lot more to the story of course and there is a ton of books or documentaries out there explaining why it was one of the greatest stories ever told before Disney bought it up.

Well it didn’t happen on screen so it doesn’t matter. Such a bad trilogy. Each one gets worse than the last. They need to move on from that year and go 1000 years in the future or past.

@TheSuperMex - Sure, they could jump ahead 1000 years in time, but due to the amazing creativity of their "writers", Palpatine would just return again...somehow. 😐😝
