STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER Actor Weighs In On Rumored J.J. Abrams/Rian Johnson Friction

There have been some rumblings for a while now about possible friction between Star Wars directors J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson, but The Rise of Skywalker actor Greg Grunberg has now weighed in on that...

Greg Grunberg played Snap Wexley in the new Star Wars movie, and when The Hollywood Reporter caught up with the actor to discuss The Rise of Skywalker, he had something to say about the claims that director J.J. Abrams used the Skywalker Saga finale to pander to longtime fans.

"When the movie came out, I was so pissed off and angry about one specific criticism that I heard. It said 'Oh he's just pandering to the fans.'" he says, "It's like, ‘What are you talking about? A movie like this is all about satisfying the fans.’" Unfortunately, it didn't really manage that, and it was hard to escape the feeling that Abrams was trying hard to make everyone happy.

An argument could be made that he need to after the response to Rian Johnson's divisive movie The Last Jedi, and when Grunberg was asked about the rumoured friction between the two filmmakers, he was quick to dismiss there being any sort of issue between them.

"I never heard one disparaging thing from J.J. about Rian," Grunberg said. "It's one of those things where if you pay attention to the film and engage with it, all it does is keep that story going."

"I would absolutely tell you if there were moments here and there. And there weren't. There just absolutely weren't. If anybody was going to try and dig that out of J.J., it'd be me," he added.

Johnson really shook things up with The Last Jedi, undoing a lot of what Abrams did. Then, in Abrams' movie, he seemingly undid many of his predecessor's decisions, including bringing back Kylo Ren's helmet and revealing that Rey's parents weren't nobodies after all (unfortunately).

Do you guys believe there's no tension between Abrams and Johnson?

I can't deny, while I didn't at all hate the Last Jedi (still not sure overall how I feel about TROS, tho certainly don't love it) I do remember thinking once it was set that Abrams would come back for Episode 9 and all these rumblings of would he just up and retcon something major like Rey's parents, that that would seem very unlikely to actually happen. Because it would sure as hell seem hard to deny the concept that Abrams would essentially be openly saying "dude you [frick]ed this up big time", and there's no way the whole machinery would allow that to happen.

well... lol

At the same time, fwiw I had the privilege of spending some time with Greg Grunberg when I used to live in LA, I met him at the premiere of "Hollow Man" that I PA'd on for post a couple months, and he was just ridiculously cordial. I'd really let following "Felicity" get away from me at that point, I swear to god he went on for like almost 5 minutes explaining to me stuff from its last season. Point is, I really don't think he'd be purposely trying to cover anything up here, though it's very possible there was some genuine friction between those two that Grunberg wasn't privy to, and no matter their friendship, Abrams isn't going to spell out for him entirely.

Tell us the truth. Tell us how much they cried at one another.

i honestly trust Greg he seems like a great guy who always tells the truth however just because he didn't hear JJ say anything doesn't mean that the two directors don't hate each other

Grunberg will never not be Matt Parkman to me. I'm sure he's a great guy, but it's actually irritating to me to see him in a movie. It's similar with Meriadoc [frick]ing Brandybock.

Of course they weren't fighting, it's obvious they were just playing a high stakes game of broken telephone.

Yeah, I’m gonna believe my eyes and ears, not J.J.’s best bud who’s never gonna day anything bad about the guy. Also, anyone who thinks pandering to fans is “what making movies is about” doesn’t have any film opinions I’m interested in. He clearly sees things the same way as J.J. so why should we listen to his damage control?
