While we've not heard anything directly from Disney/Lucasfilm, it's been confirmed today that
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has been quietly released on digital platforms a few days earlier than expected in North America. Late last night, it dropped on Amazon, Apple TV, Google Play, and Vudu.
Originally, the final chapter in the Skywalker Saga was scheduled to arrive this coming Tuesday.
It definitely appears as if this is a reaction to the Coronavirus pandemic, but this may have been a smart decision on Disney's part as well. After all, with people reluctant to head to theaters this weekend to check out the likes of Bloodshot and The Hunt, why not give them the chance to stay at home and watch
The Rise of Skywalker instead?
The movie will cost $20 in 1080p or $25 in 4K UHD. If you fancy binge-watching the entire Saga, though, the $100
Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga 9-Movie Collection is also now available!
There's been a lot of speculation about postponed theatrical releases being sold on digital platforms if theaters are indeed about to close their doors, but that seems unlikely all things considered. However, depending how bad the Coronavirus becomes, movie studios will need to find some way of responding to this pandemic (which could definitely change how we view movies).
