As many of you know, I have been following Disney's "Flynn Lives" viral marketing campaign for almost a year now. Through the campaign, Disney has crafted a complex, immersive "alternate reality" in which dedicated cyber-punks search for the truth behind the disappearance of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges. The campaign has included a real-life arcade right out of the original Tron movie, two scavenger hunts, a mock protest at WonderCon that culminated with a skydive off of a helicopter and several cryptic online puzzles that have revealed concept art and exclusive still images from the movie.
Yours truly showed up at the site of the last scavenger hunt too late to walk away with the prize--my binary code calculations were off--but the campaign continues, even as we look forward to Disney's big Tron: Legacy push at the San Diego Comic-Con.
The latest from the "Flynn Lives" people arrived in the mail last week. It was an unassuming looking postcard for a fake Encom game called "Vice Squad."
However, it was merely one piece in a larger puzzle that was revealed by aligning the little dots on the black strip on the back of the card with other Encom game postcards.
The dots lined up to reveal the name of a new viral web-site:
ENCOMGAMESDOTJP
The site is in Japanese, but by digging around I was able to find a new mini-game! It's a simple, but very addictive puzzle game in which you use light cycles to touch different checkpoints on the map without crossing your own light path or the light path of the other light cycle. Check it out!
