According to sources familiar with Warner Bros.' Shazam!, Faithe Herman, from the hit NBC show This Is Us, has been cast in the upcoming DC standalone film. There's been no confirmation on who Herman will play in the movie, although Comicbook.com reckons she will play a friend of young Billy Batson (Asher Angel) at a group home.
Getting more specific, the site speculates Herman could play Darla Dudley, the young African American girl who is Billy's friend at the group home. In Shazam's "New 52" comic book reboot (of the early 2010s), the kids at the group home - which the site says "pretty much fit the description of young actors being cast in the film" - are transformed into superheroes and referred to as "The Marvel Family" (also known as the Shazam Family) in DC Comics. Darla is one of the kids who receives powers to help Billy/Shazam defeat his nemesis Black Adam.
Herman joins five other young actors: Asher Angel as Billy Batson; Jack Grazer as Freddy Freeman; Ian Chen as Eugene Choi; Jovan Armand as Pedro Peña; and Grace Fulton who is possibly playing Mary Marvel. This ensemble presumably fits the six slots of the Shazam Family.
Shazam! is set to hit theaters in 2019.
