Could Nightwatch Appear In SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING?

A new report speculates that Sony employees are purchasing massive amounts of comic books featuring the 1992 Web Of Spider-Man series character, which may indicate that Nightwatch appears in Homecoming.

Sony is apparently ready to tackle one of the most '90s comic book characters on Marvel's roster.  Imagine Spawn crossed with Azrael and you'd arrive at something that resembled Nightwatch, aka Dr. Kevin Trench.  His origin is incredibly convoluted and begins with him witnessing a masked crime-fighter sacrificing himself to stop a gang of terrorists.  Upon unmasking the vigilante, Trench was shocked to see an older version of himself.  Yes, his origin involves time travel, nanotechnology and an apocalyptic future among other things.  

Without getting into the further trivialities of his origin, Nightwatch enjoyed a starring guest spot in Web of Spider-Man '(92) and his own short-lived solo series ('94-'95) before resurfacing in She-Hulk's 2014 solo series.

Bleeding Cool is reporting that because the character debuted in Web of Spider-Man, his film rights are owned by Sony who are looking to POSSIBLY introduce the character in Spider-Man: Homecoming.  However, we think that if Sony employees are just now buying up Nightwatch comics at this late stage, it makes more sense that he's being looked at for a future film, not Homecoming.

In all honesty, early 90's Spider-Man comics is pretty much the mother's milk I was raised on as a wee-comic nerdling and I think I may... barely recognize this guy. But I couldn't tell you one thing about him.

The Comic Vine article is a little vague, but the premise is kind of cool. You discover a dead older version of yourself in a super-suit, so you decide never to wear it... except you have to because reasons? Never knowing if it will be the last time you do before... I dunno, getting time-travelled, I guess...

@MattBellissimo - I got sold on this "best time travel" malarkey before with "Primer" and "The Man who Folded Himself".

And... actually both were pretty good, but generally went up their own ass for a while (literally in one case, Hey-Oh!). Maybe I'll give this a go, too.

@Spock0Clock - It's a very good film, basically deals with a similar concept. I never buy into those labels of "best _______ ever"...but if the story/premise is good, I'm sold.

But seriously: The Man Who Folded Himself is an awesome little book, too. It's very inside the head of the main character. Without going into details, he's very frightened about what time travel might do to him, so he resolves to always go in pairs of himself. The one in the past knows that he'll survive (because the future version is there) and the one from the future knows he'll survive (because he already saw his "future" self's future when he was his past self).

And then the book largely becomes what it's like to live with the companionship of yourself and seeing yourself from "the outside", if you get my meaning.

Maybe it's cause I am a 90's kid, but I loved Night Watch. I don't see Marvel, Fiege in particular, doing Night Watch due to similarities to Spawn. Fiege does not like to ruffle feathers, and I think doing a full fledged Night Watch would piss MacFarlane off and start a public battle.

What I do expect is maybe some guy creates a homemade suit that resembles Night Watch. He is inspired by Spider-Man, maybe even have Spidey do a Spawn reference.

Logo doesn't suit though. Needs to be something that's more cartoony, vivid and upbeat.

@TheFro - Generally agree. I really like it as a font, though. Maybe better suited to a Spider-Woman or a Spider-Man 2099 (which they should never make as a movie, but that's a different conversation).
