SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME Almost Featured Anthony Mackie's Debut As Captain America

Steve Rogers passed the mantle of Captain America to Sam Wilson at the end of Avengers: Endgame, and we very nearly saw Anthony Mackie debut as the Sentinel of Liberty in Spider-Man: Far From Home...

We still don't know exactly when we'll see Sam Wilson wielding the shield as the new Captain America, but it's now been revealed that the character almost made a cameo appearance in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

While speaking to ComicBook.com, creative executive Eric Carroll revealed that Marvel considered having Anthony Mackie appear under the mantle of Captain America towards the end of the Spidey sequel, but ultimately decided against it.

"We briefly talked about bringing in Falcon as Captain America at the end, like maybe once Peter's arced, and he's sort of like leading the team, like maybe he calls in a favour," said Carroll. "But we also thought it was really important to the arc of this movie that there not be other Avengers available to Nick Fury or Peter, so he'd have to step up and do it himself,"

Kevin Feige agreed, adding that Far From Home was all about Peter "stepping up," and "getting out of the shadow, not just of Tony but of the Avengers in general."

As cool as a cameo from "Fal-Cap" in Far From Home would have been, it probably was smarter to hold off and have Mackie make more of a grand entrance with the shield at some point in Phase 4.

At least this means it is coming for real. Like in the MCU movies not just the upcoming series. WIN.

Well, he's getting a big budget Disney+ miniseries with Bucky now.

Falcon and Winter Soldier has to finish with Sam dressed as Cap. Because Steve thinks that Sam is ready to be the new Captain America, although maybe he still does not feel prepared.

Seems like every single hero needed a vacation after that Portals battle. Who can blame them? But they chose Peter to get back to work (even tho he's on vaca too), because he has less mileage on him lol.

Classic rookie hazing.

I'd have rather seen Bucky take the mantle purely on him having super powers while Falcon only has flight. I love the Falcon as a character but he's too lightweight to be Cap imho.

I also have to give the acting chops to Sebastian as well, Anthony is what I'd term a soap actor which is his background but despite his bravado he does not command the screen. Maybe now he IS cap that side will be beefed up and needs to be, the Cap persona is a tough as nails leader..

I like Mackie as an actor and thing he does a good job as Falcon, but the problem is he hasn't really been given enough to do for us to really get to know him. Bucky's role in the MCU was so much moire developed that I kinda wanted to see him take up the mantle... although I get why Rogers would have chosen Sam.

No fu*king way.
Sam is a guy off the streets without the strength or training of Cap. Captain America was MADE in the lab and almost ALL the members of the Avengers could kick his ass. Hell, Ant-Man got over on him! It's absolutely ridiculous to consider Sam as a "new" Captain America.
Besides, why do we need a new Cap? Just, simply, retire the name.

@rocketeuropa - Um, what? Sam is a highly trained military commando. Captain America was not made in a lab. That name represents Steve’s heart, not his powers. That’s why he chose Sam to take up the legacy.

For the record: I'm 1 Million % against the "last episode reveal" of Sam as Captain America for production reasons, if nothing else. If you tell a production crew that they need to do a superhero costume that will appear in 10 episodes or throughout a film in a variety of scenes, they'll spend a lot of time, money, effort, and creative energy on it.

But if you tell them it will only appear for a few moments in one episode, or that it will only appear in a certain setting, they will devote their energy elsewhere.

Wanting Sam to only suit up in the final episode is guaranteeing that the suit will be more poorly-constructed, less effective, and more jarring, and will only reinforce the perception that super suits are a disposable contrivance of the genre. (Which they aren't. They are an important ingredient to the highly-derived iconography of modern commercial mythmaking.)

@Spock0Clock - Well, every single movie has improved the costumes each time, so we wouldn't be committed to that one design. Hell, Ant-Man's teaser showed a Wasp prototype that looked nothing like the Wasp in the sequel.

If they do this I really hope they don’t use that ugly ass comic book costume he had
