Despite persistent rumors to the contrary, Dan DeHaan will not be returning as The Amazing Spider-Man 2's Harry Osborn/Green Goblin in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and the actor recently stated that he'd have very little interest in reprising the role even if the opportunity was presented to him.
However, it sounds like DeHaan was very much on board with what Sony Pictures had in store for his take on the Green Goblin before TASM 2 effectively tanked the franchise.
While speaking to The Playlist about his role in new Apple TV+ Stephen King adaptation Lisey's Story, DeHaan reiterated his desire to move on from his Spider-Man character and "be a part of a different comic book movie,” but did also say that some "exciting" things were planned for Osborn down the line.
"At this point in my life, I’d much rather do something new,” he explained. “I love making those kinds of movies. They’re super fun to make and an incredible thing to be a part of. But I don’t think I’d want to go back and do something I did seven years ago. At the time, it seemed like something I was going to be doing for a very long time. That seemed really cool and exciting—where we were told they were going with it, and everything that was supposed to happen with it and ultimately didn’t. That would have been awesome, and it would have been a really cool, amazing thing in my life.”
“I just don’t see a reason to rehash a character I did seven years ago,” he added.
We'll probably never find out exactly where the studio would have taken DeHaan's Goblin in a potential TASM 3 and beyond, but there were reports that he would have ended up leading The Sinister Six. Now, a new rumor is claiming that Rhino, The Lizard, Sandman and Electro are set to form a different incarnation of the team under Willem Dafoe's Norman Osborn in No Way Home, but something tells us DeHaan won't be too cut up about missing out on that particular supervillain party!
Would you like to see DeHaan suit-up as the Green Goblin again, or do you think Sony/Marvel should move on with a new version of the classic Spidey villain?
