SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING
4 Reasons Donald Glover Isn't Playing Miles Morales By JEREMIUS
After his brief but beloved appearance and introduction in Captain America: Civil War, Spidey is gonna have his big time to shine in 2017 with the announcement of 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' which is gonna chronicle Peter in his high-school years, while facing off with villians and dealing with his homework, while Tony Stark's acting like the mentor-type.
The cast has been coming together pretty nicely, with some awesome additions (Michael Keaton) and some odd ones (Zendaya). But it's mostly awesome, but the recent addition of Community star Donald Glover has sparked speculations and rumours about his role, and the most obvious conclusion people have come up with is that he is playing Miles Morales, the new black-hispanic Spider-Man who took up the mantle after Peter tragically died.
He's a good character, less of a PC stunt from Marvel (looking at you, female Thor) and he made for some really good storylines. But here's why Donald just isn't playing Miles and those rumours of him just being a teacher are just all that more logical.
1. He's Just Too Old For The Role
With many fan-casts, people seem to ignore the age of the actor, so when people wanted Donald for Miles, it didn't come to their minds that he was really, really old for the role. Miles was like, 13, when he became Spider-Man, while i believe Donald is in his 30's? So, it had no chance at working.
Even with make-up, to add or minimize age in an actor, it still wouldn't work; that said, he's a good choice, but even a time machine can't help Donald's chances of getting the part, right now.
2. Well, He HAS Played Miles Once
Okay, i am not saying that he would say no to a live action appearance, but his desire for playing Spidey and the fan support lead to him playing the Miles Morales character in the Ultimate Spider Man cartoon. Plus, there is no age in voice-acting, like many grown actors playing small children.
It was a good part, but with limitations to playing Miles on the big screen, he can atleast have this Miles performance in his resume.
3. The Film Needs To Focus On Peter's Journey
Sony and Marvel have this plan to tell Peter right across many movies, akin to how Harry Potter did it with their lead character. It's a good idea, and to not reboot AGAIN, they need to have the character done right.
With having another Spidey like Miles in the first movie- you're just not making this journey of Peter's that impactful. With Garfield's mixed outing as the webslinger, we need the definitive movie take on Spider-Man.
4. Just Do The Right Thing
If Miles is in Homecoming, then making him older really doesn't give weight to Miles being a kid, following Spidey and his legacy, now doesn't it? It's a good character arc, that needs to be done right.
