Andrew Garfield Is Still Campaigning For A "Pansexual" SPIDER-MAN On The Big Screen

Andrew Garfield's interviews about the past and future of Spider-Man have taken a pretty bizarre turn today, and after his bizarre comments about the state of superhero movies, the British actor is now once again reiterating his desire to see a "pansexual" Spidey on the big screen...

Earlier this year, we found out that Sony could have never drastically shaken up the status quo of Spider-Man with a race or sexuality change due to contractual obligations laid down by Marvel when they sold the rights all those years ago. Kevin Feige meanwhile had very little interest in altering Peter Parker's race in the upcoming reboot when asked about that, and in a recent interview with Mic, Andrew Garfield admitted to not having any idea about those limitations when he signed on to star in The Amazing Spider-Man movies. "I'm excited to get to the point where we don't have to have this conversation, where we can have a pansexual Spider-Man."

"The richness of the world we're in, the diversity of the world we're in; you look at the animal kingdom and you see it reflected. You look all over," he continued. "What are we so scared of? Why are we so, 'No, it has to be this way, a man and a woman.' Why is that even a conversation? We're scared of things that aren't us. Love is love. Skin is skin. Flesh is flesh. We're all wrapped in the same thing. I have no preference. The beauty about Spider-Man, for me, is that he's covered head to toe. That's why everyone thinks it could be them in that suit. You don't see skin color. You don't see sexual orientation. You don't see how old the person is, gender, the whole thing. I celebrate that. Anyone can be a hero in their own lives." That's a sentiment shared by many fans in fairness, but do you agree that it's time for a Peter Parker who is neither white nor straight?

Dafuq? Seriously? Why change already established characters? A race change at best is diversity enough, anything else is just excessive.

100% agreed. I'm not on board with race changes for ANY character (i.e. someone like Bruce Wayne probably NEEDS to be a white male), but it has to make sense. And with Spider-Man, it probably makes the most sense actually. A recurring theme (if not THE recurring theme) of the character is that he represents the every-man. None of this "prophecy" or "destiny" bullshit (looking at you, TASM 1 and 2!). Literally anyone could be under that suit. Why not reflect that through Peter Parker himself? What about being white is somehow inherent or a core characteristic of the character?

Anyone remember back when Toy Story 3 and Avatar came out and on IMDB some people created this huge [frick]ing stink over none of the character's being gay even though they came out in June or Gay Pride Month. They were all pissed that Woody wasn't giving the wood to Buzz and Jake wasn't getting him some blue alien man ass.

Clearly THIS is the true meaning of Pansexual:

Oh, for f%$#'s sake... Garfield isn't "campaigning" for anything!

Read the comment. He said he's looking forward to the day when we "can" have a pansexual Spider-Man-- he's not suggesting that we "SHOULD" have a pansexual Spider-Man. His point is that he wants to live in a world where it doesn't matter what Spider-Man's sexual orientation is, because we understand that people are people and that a person's sexual orientation should not be held as a defining aspect of their personality.

Jeez, Josh... enough with the flame-baiting already!

While there is nothing inherently heterosexual about Peter Parker, I'm against changing established characters to cater to a particular group of people. I'm not against change, but it just feels like pandering. What they could do is create a new character that adds to Spider-man's mythos and use one of the largest platforms in the world in terms of merchandise to increase diversity.

Nope!

Peter Parker is a straight white dude. Not interested in seeing a movie where Spidy is conflicted about banging MJ or smoking Eddie Brock's pole.

You're totally right.

One of the very few niggles I have with Nolan's characterisation of Batman is the idea that anyone can be Batman, and while it totally works in the context of his trilogy, as a version of Batman, I'm not big on it. Bruce Wayne is Batman. And if not him, someone who's trained for years and years and pushed their skills to a peak level. You can't have just anyone in that suit.

Spidey, on the other hand? He could be anyone, and I love that.

I think Spider-Man is too busy fighting crime daily to explore his sexuality all the way to pansexual.. He might glance at an Abrocrombie and Fitch billboard for too long while swinging around but that'll probably be the most of it.. But seriously why is it that we must so many sexually and ethnically diverse characters. I understand the 'all walks of life' stuff but we're getting away from the most interesting part of these stories. I want the "Tales to Astonish" and "The Journeys into Mystery". Diversified dramas, although able to make for good stories, are not what intrigue my scifi fascination.

Caitlyn Jenner for Spiderman???

Garfield needs to shut up now and move on. If he has a publicist or PR person they need to hammer "No Comment" into his feeble brain.

@staypuffed Funny enough, I was actually thinking of Nolan's whole "Anyone can be Batman" philosophy when I wrote that! Though I really enjoyed that aspect of the trilogy, I can totally get why fans wouldn't be, well, fans of that haha (especially since that was Nolan's justification for the very last scene of the trilogy, with Blake taking up the mantle).

But absolutely agreed - it's 100% appropriate for the Spider-Man character. And I'd love to see that reflected in the casting someday.
