The movie may have received a lukewarm reception from critics (it currently sits "rotten" with 56% on RT), but that hasn't stopped the public coming out in droves to support Sony's sequel to
The Amazing Spider-Man. The latest report from THR reveals that the film has set a new opening day record in Hong Kong when it opened there yesterday, May 1st. The follow up to Marc Webb's Spidey reboot took HK$9.56 million ($1.23 million) -- the largest ever opening gross in the territory. This beats Sam Raimi's
Spider-Man 3, which was the previous record holder, grossing HK$7.56 million on its opening day in 2007. Already sitting on $150 million overseas after two weeks of release, and with a predicted $95 million haul when it opens in North America this weekend, there seems to be no slowing down the webhead's second (well, 5th!) big-screen outing.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in mainland China on May 4th.
