SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Star Tom Holland Weighs In On Those BLACK CAT And VENOM Spinoffs

We've learned recently that Sony is developing movies featuring Venom and Black Cat and Silver Sable, but will Spider-Man: Homecoming's Tom Holland be involved? Here's what he had to say about that!

While an argument could be made that we don't really need a Venom movie or one revolving around Black Cat and Silver Sable, there's nothing to say either one of them will be bad. All of those characters have a ton of potential, but the vast majority of fans would much prefer to see them included in the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel, a movie set firmly within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Instead, it appears as if Sony is planning on moving forward with adventures featuring these heroes and villains in a world where Spider-Man may not even exist, a baffling and infuriating decision.

When Variety caught up with Tom Holland at CinemaCon to ask if he knows anything about these spinoffs, the actor pretty much gave the answer most of us probably expected to hear. "I have no idea. I haven’t read a script. I haven’t seen any sort of concept art, so that would be something I would decide on when I see
material." Well, on the plus side, at least he's open to them!

It's entirely possible Sony will ask him to show up in those despite them having nothing to do with the MCU, but for the time being, Holland is busy with his commitments to that shared universe.

"They all feel like very different movies to me. “Civil War” was such a whirlwind, and I didn’t really know what was going on. I was thrown into the deep end. “Spider-Man” was the best time of my life. I was there with my best friend. We shot in Atlanta. We shot every day and just had an absolute blast. “Avengers” was crazy, because you’re on set every day with actors I never dreamed I would work with. I’m as much a fan as anyone else."

What do you guys think of these comments from Holland? Let us know down in the usual place.

@Kevwebsz - why the hell this kid needs to answer questions that are THIS disconnected from anything he's currently performing in just shows how the media will grasp at anything to create a story. It's pretty lame. And only creates more nonsense; more negative debate and fodder with regard to stories that most likely aren't even warranted or considered as options, it just beyond annoying that these actors even need to answer dum dum questions and therefore creates ridiculous debates among the fanboys who only dream to see some of these scenarios capture in the big screen

@JONALOTZRH - It could be connected in the same way as Netflix is connected to MCU. I'd be fine if it was just references. Also, connected in the way that Batman had a non-speaking cameo in Suicide Squad.

@JONALOTZRH - how?

The studio haven't announced anything other than Venom and a Black/Cat movie

@JoJo1982 -
1. Marvel Studio hasn't done a press release about a Venom film joining the fold.
2. Marvel Studio isn't producing the film.
3. Avi Arad is producing the film (the guy that Kevin Feige said to get rid of if Sony wants spider man in the MCU)
4. Netflix show are a smaller in scope and cost. It doesn't need to sell toys to kids.
5. Marvel studios doesn't like Marvel/Marvel TV. They broke away from them, remember that? was a big news story?

there your proof

I've been wrestling with the idea of these movies since the Venom announcement earlier. I really like the idea of Sony taking over R-rated films for the MCU. Jut this past year, Sony put out Don't Breathe, The Shallows, and Elle. Someone there obviously has an eye for suspense as well as new, engaging looks at female leads. I can only hope they get to have a say in how Venom and Black Cat/Silver Sable looks.

But it's clear from the Sony hack that the company is disorganized and doesn't have a clear vision for their comic book properties. Removing Spider-Man from the franchise exacerbates the problem since most of these characters exist as an extension of him. There would have to be major origin changes to justify their existence. These changes could fundamentally change the characters from why the fanbase exists in the first place. At that point, wouldn't it just be better to find a different franchise worth pursuing?

Bottom line: I'd love to connect this to the MCU, but if it's not, Sony would need to get organized or steer clear.
