Spider-Man 4 was supposed to be released in 2011, but the movie failed to materialise and Sony Pictures instead chose to reboot the franchise with 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man.
A decade later, both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield returned as their respective Peter Parker Variants in Spider-Man: No Way Home, leading to fans making their interest known in future solo outings for them both.
Neither Spider-Man 4 nor The Amazing Spider-Man 3 appear to be on the horizon. However, the door is open to us seeing these wall-crawlers again in either a future MCU-set Spider-Man movie or Avengers: Secret Wars.
Mary Jane Watson actress Kirsten Dunst has addressed a possible return on multiple occasions. That happening would offer a glimpse into Peter Parker's home life and, if Marvel Studios follows the "Renew Your Vows" comics, then Dunst could even suit up as Spinneret.
"I remember, we were going to make another Spider-Man 4," she says in the video below. "I think we were, I can't remember, to be honest. We'll see what happens. I mean, that universe is very open. It's anything. So, for me to be in a Spider-Man movie again, or something, is possible, I guess."
So, it's not exactly a guarantee she'll be back, but Dunst certainly doesn't appear to be against the idea.
Elsewhere in the interview, the Civil War star looked back on 2002's Spider-Man and the scene which sees Mary Jane fall from a balcony after the Green Goblin attacks. Spidey saves her in time, but following a test run, Dunst knew a stunt double was needed.
"I did do a lot of my stunts in Spider-Man, and I remember one stunt that they 'tested' on me once," she recalls. "They pulled me up basically to the top of a Sony sound stage, which is enormous, and they let me free fall until the very last second. I was like, 'You should have done that on camera. I will never do that again.'"
"It was like a bungee jump, and I'm not that [person]. I don't need that adrenaline, personally, so I put my foot down. I was like, 'I am never doing that ever again.'"
Last we heard, Marvel Studios wants Maguire and Garfield to suit up for the next Avengers movies. Sony, buoyed by the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, would rather insert them into that movie's sequel for a Multiversal team-up. We still don't know which side has prevailed or whether a compromise has been reached.
