Sony Pictures' Madame Web remains shrouded in secrecy, and while we're keeping our expectations low (it was written by the duo responsible for Morbius), it may well be a game-changer for this Marvel Universe.
Rumour has it the story will revolve around a pregnant Mary Parker who is being protected from the villainous Ezekiel Sims by a group of female spider heroes. It's an intriguing premise if correct, and one that could open up the live-action Spider-Verse in new and, hopefully, exciting ways.
If their mission fails, it may explain why this world doesn't have a Spider-Man. However, it's hard not to worry about Sony once again toying with the Multiverse - as they did with The Vulture in Morbius - by revealing Peter Parker was sent to the MCU in an effort to keep him safe.
We'll have to wait and see, but when Collider spoke with Madame Web star Adam Scott, he was quick to share his excitement for the project.
"I actually didn't think I was gonna work over the summer before we started Severance up again because we started in October, and I wasn't planning on working at all before then," the actor recalls. "Then this came up, and I couldn't resist."
"It's really cool. It's a really fun world and a great role, but I can't really say that much about it other than it's cool and fun, which I'm sure you're so sick of hearing from people."
It's widely believed Scott is playing Mary's sister, Ben, the man who will one day impart a very important piece of wisdom to his nephew, Peter. Set photos have shown him dressed in a paramedic's uniform alongside Dakota Johnson's Madame Web, so the movie is definitely telling its own story rather than adhering to the source material.
We're certainly intrigued to see how this story plays out and what it means for this Marvel Universe's future. Thankfully, it appears Tom Holland's web-slinger will remain in the MCU, leaving Avi Arad to focus on the hero's alternate reality supporting characters and supervillains.
Madame Web is set to swing into theaters on February 16, 2024.
